Esther Jacob Latendresse
Esther Jacob Latendresse died peacefully in her sleep on May 6, 2005, at age 82.

Esther Keen Jacob was born on Feb. 1, 1923, the fourth of six children of Sarah Keen and William Jacob, in Marion, IN. In 1943 she married Lyle Joseph Latendresse. After WWII, they settled in Decateur, IL, where their first child, Michael, was born. Due to a respiratory condition of Mike's, they relocated to Ft. Worth, TX, where daughter Sarah was born. In yet another attempt to find a more suitable climate for their young son, they moved West and settled in Grants Pass, OR, where sons Patrick and Timothy were born.

Besides co-raising their four children, Esther also raised and tended fruits and vegetables and hundreds of egg-laying chickens to help support her young family. Through it all, Esther sang. "If I had a nickle for every chick I've had to feed, you know I'd never be in need, I'd be a millionaire. . . ." She was a cheerful, energetic, loving mother. Actively involved in St. Anne's Catholic Church community and numerous PTAs, Esther could always be counted upon to help with whatever need presented itself.

In 1960, Esther went to work for the V.A. in White City. In 1961 the Latendresse family moved to Medford, where son Mike died in 1963. That incredible loss changed her life forever. In 1970 Esther and Lyle moved to Orange County, CA. There Esther worked for H.U.D., and the job was intense. She retired from Civil Service in 1976. Always an artist at heart, she enrolled in painting classes and spent many hours at the easel.

When Lyle retired in 1986, they returned to the Rogue Valley. Lyle died in 1993, just months after their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Esther remained in Medford until 2002, when she moved to the Portland suburb of Wilsonville, where she died in her home.

Survivors include her children, Sarah, Patrick, and Timothy; seven grandchildren: Lori Latendresse, Rene Kasma, Braden Latendresse, Jessica Tharp, Hannah Brooks, Jaci Humphrey, and Sumner Brooks; six (soon to be 8) great-grandchildren; her sister Marguerite Roach, and brother Paul Jacob.

On Wednesday, May 11, there will be an informal viewing in the Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park from 12 - 1 p.m., followed by a graveside ceremony at 2 p.m.

Thank you to all of you who enriched her life with your friendship.

L. George Bannister
May 20, 1919 - May 6, 2005

George Bannister was born in Cumming, Georgia, the youngest surviving child of nine born to Elmer and Effie (Bennett) Bannister. He learned to work hard, treasure family and friends, and love growing things on the family cotton farm. After a short teaching stint in rural Georgia, he left to serve his country in World War II, first in a munitions and equipment factory and then as a soldier in a topographical battalion in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan.

He met Rogue Valley native Gloria Houston during basic training at Camp White. After a long correspondence, they decided to bridge the gap between North and South and were married on February 8, 1946. They settled in Anderson, South Carolina to raise their family. However, during a visit to Medford in 1947 George met the inventor of a unique over-snow vehicle. Tucker Sno-Cat became George's career for 37 years and, although he sorely missed his Georgia family, Medford became his home. Here he and his family became active members of the First Christian Church and he pursued lifelong interests.

High on that list of interests were gardening and building things. He was challenged to have the first and finest tomatoes each year, and his okra was a rare treat for friends from the South. As for building, show him a picture of anything and he could make it. Besides his family though, George's most important interest was people, where they came from, what they did. George never met a stranger. He was generous with his time, his talents and his vegetables, and in return loving family, friends and neighbors supported him throughout his long life and recent illness.

George is survived by his wife, Gloria, daughter Mary Luethe and spouse Doug Moore, of Vancouver, BC, daughter Anne Barker and spouse Dennis Gilmore of Boise, Idaho, daughter Vicki Storie and companion Paul Bracken of Salem, Oregon, sister, Lois Heard, of Cumming, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.

During his illness George benefited greatly from the generosity of blood donors. His family suggests donations in his memory, in lieu of flowers, to American Red Cross or to Medford First Christian Church.

A memorial service celebrating George's life will be held at Medford First Christian Church, 1900 Crater Lake Avenue, at 1 p.m. Friday May 13, 2005.
