Phoebe Helen Ewaldsen
Phoebe Helen Ewaldsen, born Feb. 29, 1924 in Medford, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005 in Edmonds, WA after a long illness with the somewhat rare disease referred to as the "Lou Gehrig Disease" or ALS for short (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). It is a very frustrating disease in that little is known about how it starts or how to cure it when it does. It basically starts in the nerves that control the muscles and the patient looses control of the muscles as time goes on - sometimes very slowly and sometimes at a much faster rate. All ages seem vulnerable.

Phoebe was finally diagnosed with the disease in February of this year. After several falls, she entered a rehabilitation center the end of June and was transfered to a private care home on July 1, 2005 and remained there until she passed on. Along the way she heard about the "Willed Body Program" operated by the Washington University Medical School and decided she wanted to be part of it. She therefore willed her body to the school for scientific study. Later when the studies are completed she will be cremated and buried in the Eagle Point National cemetery on the former WWII Camp White reservation, where her husband being a veteran will also be buried. Their oldest son Eric, a veteran from Viet Nam, has been there since 1984. Since she was born and raised in Jackson County, she will one day return.

She is survived by her husband, Otto A. Ewaldsen of Edmonds, WA; a son, Hans C. Ewaldsen of Edmonds, WA; daughter, Karen Helen Callahan of Central Point; daughter, Maria Amalia Ewaldsen of Bend; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son, Eric Otto Ewaldsen on Feb. 12, 1984 (buried in the Eagle Point National cemetery on land formerly the WWII Camp White Army Base); brother, Jackie, age 5, killed in an auto accident in 1925; and sister, Nancy, died from Cancer. Feb. 7, 1992.

Phoebe was an accomplished accordion player and did much of that at the various USO locations and CCC camps throughout Jackson County before and during WWII. She was also an accomplished piano player and organist. She learned to play the organ in her teen years on the original Craterian Theater Organ in downtown Medford. On Jan. 30, 1943, Phoebe married Lieutenant Otto Ewaldsen, topographic engineer training at Camp White, at the Zion Lutheran Church on 4th and Oakdale St. in Medford, the church where at that time she also played the organ. How the two had originally met was a story in itself.

During the war years, when Ewaldsen was in the South Pacific making maps to show the way for General MacArthur and the allied forces in the South West Pacific to retake the Philippines and Japan, Phoebe worked in the family store, Swem's Book and Gift Shop, with her father, Jack Swem, and a dedicated staff of clerks. With 40, 000 troops at Camp White, and the store at 217 East Main being in the heart of downtown, it stayed very busy.

In 1910, the Swem family migrated to Jackson County from St. Paul, MN and started a photo studio, first in Ashland, and then in Medford. This was the business that grew into the large book and gift shop that it later became. Phoebe had a lot to do with its growth over the years. The original members that came west were her grandfather and grandmother, her future father, Jack, and an uncle named Thomas. Her mother, Helen Dahl, came from North Dakota with the Stewart Family in 1906. Her parents, Jack and Helen were married on October 5, 1919. Phoebe was the last surviving member from that whole family group.

After WWII, Otto Ewaldsen formed a partnership with Jack Swem and the store continued to grow and expanded its many departments. In the 1950s a record shop and players was added. In the early 1970s a very large oriental rug gallery was added which included a preservation and repair section. Phoebe had learned rug conservation procedures in both London and Berlin and trained a staff of several ladies to work in the gallery. This part of the business grew rapidly since it was the only oriental rug gallery between Portland and San Francisco. The rug gallery was moved to 112 S. Riverside in 1977.

Phoebe was also a recognized authority on china and crystal having run those departments in the store for so many years and dealt with most of the major lines in each category including English, German, French, as well as the major domestic brands such as Lenox. Over the years she gave many talks to the various civic clubs around Medford. About ten years ago, she became interested in quilting and pursed that hobby with vigor. Her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ewaldsen, also became very interested in the hobby and together they attended the popular quilting event that goes on for a week at Sister, OR each July and attracts people from around the world.

The Ewaldsens travelled widely throughout the USA having made several "grand loops" of over 10, 000 miles each. As the children grew they were included in these "US Geography" trips. They also travelled in England, Scotland, Germany, and Austria mainly in their studies at museums of the various oriental rug collections.

Any memorial remembrance can be made to: ALS Division, The National Headquarters Muscular Dystrophy Assn., 3300 E. Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718, or call (800) 572-1717 to get the address of the Local Chapter in your area.
