Thomas "Tom" Emmens
Thomas "Tom" Alfred Emmens, 62, of Elmira (formerly of the Rogue Valley), died on May 7, 2005 of cancer. There will be a memorial gathering to scatter his ashes in June 2005, at Big Creek.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Historical Society or the Eugene Masonic cemetery.

He was born on May 18, 1942 in Medford to Robert and Justine (Miller) Emmens. The family left Medford and traveled to Bucharest, Romania, Arlington, VA, Salzburg Austria, Langley, Air Force Base in Virginia, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tokyo, Japan, and New York City where he studied for his PhD. He moved to Eugene in 1958. On June 29, 2001 in Florence, he married Conni Loomis, who survives.

Mr. Emmens had two masters degrees in Political Science and Asian Studies, and he worked on his PhD at Columbia Univeristy in NY, NY and at the Univeristy of Oregon.

In the 1960s he worked for the Yellow Submarine Commune in Eugene making Granola. In the 1970s he was a truck driver for Springfield Creamery. For many years he worked as a tree planter for Hoedads, Rolling Rock, and Skookum. He was part owner of DS & T. When he wasn't tree planting he worked for Agripac. He also worked as a dispatcher for Skookum.

Tom was a member of the Oregon Historical Society, the Southern Oregon Historical Society, and Phi Beta Kappa.

He enjoyed history (in particular, Oregon history and the Ankeny family), photography, writing, reading, and conservaton.

Survivors include his wife Conni Loomis; his mother, Justine Emmens of Medford; brother Michael of Medford; sister, Robin of Jacksonville; and a niece Amelia Emmens-Budd of Sitka, Alaska.

Cheri Moore Donahoo, 54, of Central Point, died May 20, 2005. Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford.

Violet L. George
Violet L. George, 88, of Ashland, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at the Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Cloey Lee Keffer
The funeral service for Cloey Lee Keffer will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2005, in the Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N Phoenix Rd, Medford, with Dr. David Campbell officiating. Committal service will follow in the Garden of Honor within Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Keffer, 75, formerly of Medford, passed away August 26, 2005 at her home in Oscoda, Michigan.

She was born September 18, 1929 in N. Hollywood, California, to J.C. and Mary (Bolder) Poitevint. In April, 1962 she married Tim Monroe Keffer who preceded her in death in 2002. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1933. Leaving her home but not her heart, she moved to Michigan in 1984 with her children.

The things Cloey enjoyed in life was having her family all together and hearing laughter. She also loved spending the day in the garden with her flowers, and she was a talented seamstress.

Survivors include three sons, Todd Hodges of Oscoda, MI, Tim Keffer, Jr. of Royal Oak, MI, Jim Keffer of Dundee, MI; two daughters, Judy Willits of Medford, Kim Oberhofer of Ypsilanti, MI; five grandchildren with one more on the way; five brothers and six sisters.

Fern Lovell Sweeney Kiley
Fern (Lovell) (Sweeney) Kiley, 82, of Medford, died August 28, 2005 in Medford.

A viewing will be on Friday 1-7 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Father Michael Vuky of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Providence Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

Fern was born March 8, 1923 in Findlay, OH. Moving from California, she lived in the Rogue Valley since 1991.

Survivors include sons, Larry Lovell of Finlay, OH, Robert Lovell of Springfield, OH and Raymond Sweeney of Norfolk, VA; daughters, Billie Schneider of Medford, Patricia Olsen of Mentor, OH, Joan Meyers and Joyce Alaqua, both of Ft. Myers, FL; brother, William Baxter of Benson, AZ; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Robert Lovell, William Sweeney and William Kiley; a son, Richard Sweeney; parents, Gilbert and Goldie Baxter; sisters, Loma, Eva, Dorothy, and Loretta; and her brother, Gilbert Baxter.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford.

Inez Kathryn Granath
The graveside service for Inez Kathryn Granath will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 11 a.m., at Glendale Memorial cemetery, Glendale, OR.

Inez K. Granath, 92, died August 31, 2005 at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. She was born October 18, 1912 to Henry & Lenora Gaedecke at their home on Cow Creek Road east of Azalea, OR.

Inez married Henry Smith in 1934. He was killed in a logging accident in 1941, leaving her with three small children. Inez worked hard to provide for her family in the following years.

Inez spent her entire life in southern Oregon. On her 80th birthday she married John Granath. They had many happy years. John died in 1996.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Pat Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Noni and Norman Jarvis; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Gaedecke; 14 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Gaedecke and one daughter, Janet Lewis.

Jack V. Trusty
Jack V. Trusty was born June 3, 1925 in Bay City, Oregon, the sixth child of Vester and Nellie Cooper Trusty. He passed away August 29, 2005 due to complications of diabetes.

He finished school at Bay City High School and was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1943 until 1946. He was a machine gunner, participating in two battles in the Asiatic Pacific theater and ended up in combat just four months after his enlistment. When he returned to Tillamook after the war, he served for several years as a volunteer fireman.

Jack married Lillian Neimann in 1948. Lillian passed away in 1990. Jack is survived by his two daughters, Carol Bonney (Patrick) of Ashland, and Helen Trusty of Grants Pass. He is also survived by four grandsons, Spencer and Nolan Bonney of Ashland and Alex and Blake Miller of Grants Pass; sister, Jean Bailey; and a brother, David Trusty of Tillamook. He is also survived by foster daughter, Linda McMurphy, personal assistant, Ahyde Cores, husband Romeo Cores and children, and many nephews, nieces and friends who made his life richer, especially Dr. Lyle Mohr, not only his doctor but his good friend. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Esther Pangborn, Earmalee Hiersche, Rhoda Sumner and brother, James Trusty.

Jack worked as a long scaler, owned a construction company, and also over the years owned Juno Inn, Pirates Cove, the Panorama Room which was located in the old Natatorium building in Rockaway, and the Time Out Tavern. He also owned a tavern in Thousand Oaks, California. Jack was known as a song leader, emcee of Pig n'Ford races, story teller, musician and advocate for those less fortunate.

Jack had a lifelong interest in music and at the age of 13 started playing drums with the old Rube Wilkins band. he played in the band until he went into the Marine Corps. Jack was a member of the Elks and Tillamook County Pioneer Association, volunteer for Toys for Tots and hospice.

Interment will be at Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens Saturday, September 3, at 11 a.m. A gathering and celebration of life will be at Tillamook Elks Club from 12 to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oregon Diabetes Association, 2350 Oakmont Way, Ste. 208, Eugene, OR 97401.

Ken Black
Ken Black, of Ashland, died peacefully at home on Monday, August 29, 2005 after a two-year battle with cancer. Born April 26, 1938, Ken was 67. Ken and his beloved wife, Anna, moved to Ashland from Houston, TX in 1997.

In addition to Anna, surviving Ken is his mother, Olga Black; sister, Betty Sisson, both of Kansas; children, Don Black of New Canaan, CT, Cindy Trice of Dallas, TX; five grandchildren, Marciny, Mackenzie, Clayton, Brenna and Bailey; and his adored pets, Callie, Banjo and Princess.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Havurah Synagogue, Capital Campaign, PO Box 1262, Ashland, Oregon, 97520.

A memorial service for the community will be planned.

Norma J. Evans
Norma J. Evans, beloved wife, mom, grandma and friend, died Aug. 28 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was 83.

A memorial service for Norma will be held this Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3737 Liberty Rd. S., Salem, OR.

Norma J. Compton was born in Danville, IL, on Aug. 22, 1922. She was the fourth of eight children. She graduated from Danville High School in 1940 as valedictorian.

Norma was an accomplished pianist and became assistant organist at Chicago's Christ Church; it was there she met her husband Paul, who was in seminary studying to become a Presbyterian minister. She and Paul were married for 57 years, and they raised a family of four girls and two boys. They lived in Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Oregon and Idaho. Paul died in 2002.

For many years, Norma served as a church leader, including Moderator of the Pacific N.W. Presbyterian Churches. She was especially involved with women's religious issues concerning inclusive language in scripture, hymns and worship. She was active in Salem P.E.O. Chapter ET, Portland Cambrian Society and the Willamette Alaska Club.

Norma's sharp wit was reflected in her daily conversation and in her talks on humor and spirituality. She was devoted to her family, and loved laughing with her children and grandchildren. She also loved music, and was especially fond of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.

Norma is survived by her six children and their partners and children: Carol Evans, Lark Wiesner and Christy Vaughn; Paul and Veda Evans, Jeff and Beth Evans and their daughters Chelsea and Sophia Rose, and Joe and Chelsea Oram and their children Joseph and Reese; Catherine and David Vieira, Mia and Pete Henkel, and Carrie and Matthew; Peter and Debbie Evans; Christine Evans and John Gland, Kathy and James Mills, Scott and Sarah Galante and Wesley; and Sarah and Mark Runyon and Daniel, Alissa and Emma; and by her brother Jack Compton and his wife Donna as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Norma lived the final five years of her life at Brookstone, a Salem Alzheimer's special care center, and delighted in visits from her family. Just a week before her death she celebrated her 83rd birthday with family in Corvallis, where she shared birthday festivities with her youngest granddaughter, Emma, 8.

The family asks that donations be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Association of Oregon. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home.

Dorothy "Nell" Eitemiller
Dorothy Avonelle "Nell" Eitemiller, 86 years old, peacefully left us on the evening of April 6, 2005 to join her husband, Harry Speece Eitemiller and oldest daughter, Nancy Louise Wigand.

Nell was born in McKeesport, PA on December 14, 1918. She married Harry on June 12, 1937. When Harry retired from the steel mill in 1962, he and Nell moved to Northern California to be close to their four children and great-grandchildren.

Nell first came to Oregon in 1986 to live with her daughter, Nancy Wigand in Medford.

She enjoyed playing bingo, doing puzzles, eating at Sizzler's and just sitting outside in the sunshine watching her great-grandchildren play. In 2001, Nell moved to Eagle Cove Assisted Living in Eagle Point where she enjoyed the company of many good friends. She was always laughing and joking around and had a smile for just about everyone.

Nell leaves behind three children, Bud Eitemiller and his wife Nancy of The Colony, Texas, Skip Eitemiller of Northrop, California and Margaret Jean Mikel and husband John of Newark, California. One sister, Betty Jean Montgomery of Manteca, California, one brother, Red James of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, 10 grandchildren, Michelle, Lori, Kim, Mathew, Sherri, Timmy, Mark, Eric, Charlie and Little Skip, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Nell did not want to have a funeral service, so won't you join her family and friends in toasting her long, happy life in your own way. She would have liked that.

We'll miss you grandma!

Michael Cammarano
A Funeral Mass for Michael Cammarano will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Medford.

Mr. Cammarano, 83, of Jacksonville, died April 7, 2005 in Medford.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1921 in Bronks, NY. On July 30, 1944 in St. Mathies Catholic Church in Santa Monica, CA he married Mary Wells who survives.

Mr. Cammarano served in the U.S. Army as a staff sargent from 1939 to 1945.

He worked as a chef at the Jacksonville Inn for many years.

In addition to his wife, Mary, survivors include his son, Mike Cammarano; his daughters, Deanna Renna, Madelyn Cammarano; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Josephs Catholic Church, Jacksonville.

Betty Nichols-Roy, 85, of Medford, died Friday (April 8, 2005) at a local care home in Medford. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.
