Mary Agnes Davis
Mary Agnes Davis died peacefully September 18, 2005 at Waterford Residential Care Facility. She was 94 years old.

Mary was the first born of John and Philomena Louie's five children. She was born at home in Big Springs, Siskiyou County, California, on September 16, 1911. Her schooling was delayed a year in order for her and the twins Elsie and Ellis, to start school together as boarding students at St. Mary's Academy in Medford, Oregon. She was a boarding student at St Mary's for twelve years graduating on June 5, 1931.

While much of her early life was spent away at Boarding School in 1929, as a descendent of full Portuguese parents, she was Queen of the annual Portuguese Picnic at Hawkinsville, California. In 1996, she served as Grand Marshall of the Parade. In 1937, she graduated in the Secretarial Department of Heald College, Oakland, California. Finding work during that time was difficult and she did what was then called "piece" work, a forerunner of the Temp Services. Landing a job with Nestle Company, she commuted by train into San Francisco. During this time, her sister, Catherine lived with her. Mary had the responsibility of the teenager and her schooling. She later went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad in the Accounting/Payroll Department of a Creosote Treatment Plant in Alameda, California. During World War II she saw and carried the name, Robert A. Davis, on the Payroll. When he returned to work after serving in Europe, they met in person. They were married on October 19, 1946 in Oakland, California and celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1996. Together they resided and worked in the Bay Area, buying their first home in San Leandro and later building two others. Mary retired in 1971 and they moved to Grants Pass, where they lived until they built a new home in Medford, moving to the Valley in the spring of 1989.

Mary was active in the Alter Society and Legion of Mary in San Leandro, California for many years and was also active at Sacred Heart Parish in Medford. She couldn't believe she learned to do crafts in her seventies and enjoyed it, participating in a number of the Society's Bazaars. She loved to entertain and enjoyed her garden. She often wrote of her late bearing raspberries when she lived in the Bay Area. Well into her 80's, she was producing tomatoes, string beans, peppers and cucumbers in her backyard raised box garden. She loved flowers, especially roses. Her passion was playing cards - Pinochle, she thought five handed was the best.

Mary is survived by her sisters, Gertrude, Elsie and Catherine Sakraida; her brother-in-law, Vincent Sakraida; 17 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Davis and her brother, Ellis Louie.

Rosary Service will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Medford, Thursday, September 22, at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass is scheduled Friday, September 23 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. A Reception will be held in the Parish Hall.

Remembrances to St. Vincent De Paul, Sacred Heart School and St. Mary's High School.

Arrangement by Perl Funeral Home. Burial at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank Providence Hospice and the Caregivers at Waterford Residential Care Facility.
