William Corbett
William Corbett, 78, of Medford, OR, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in his home on September 11, 2005. He died from complications related to a coronary angiogram.

He was born on May 30, 1927 in Olympia.WA. He spent most of his youth in San Francisco, where he graduated from high school in 1946. He served his country in the Navy, earning an honorable discharge in 1948 after two years of service. He married his high school sweetheart Erlice, to whom he was married over 50 years. They had four children: Mike, Robert, Jamie and Glenn.

William was a third generation railroader. Like his father, J.W. Corbett, who retired as a vice-president, William enjoyed a very successful career as a Southern Pacific Railroad executive. His most rewarding job was as Superintendent of Operations for the San Antonio Division, the largest of only twelve divisions. He retired in 1984.

William worked a number of years for Medford Moving and Storage, a company owned by his brother Robert. William and Robert were identical twins; accordingly, they shared a bond the depth of which few can ever know. William also worked in recent years as a school bus driver. He thoroughly enjoyed this job and doubtless made a lasting impression on many of the youngsters with whom he formed friendships. Most recently, he was very active serving the community in a number of capacities, including Meals on Wheels and as a driver for Providence Medivan. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

William enjoyed sports. He played baseball and football for St. Ignatius High School, with whom he was an "all-city" guard for the 1946 AAA San Francisco football championship team. More than the championship, he valued most the many life-long friendships formed in that crucible of competition. While in the Navy, he played football for the Alameda Naval Air Hellcats. He played in the 1947 All-Navy Champioship game where he blocked for Forty-Niner NFL Hall of Famer "Joltin Joe" Perry. He was an avid golfer perhaps most remembered for his putting prowess using his fabled "goose neck" putter.

William was a kind, decent, generous man with a huge heart and a great sense of humor.

He will be missed by all. Preceding William in death was his wife Erlice, as well as his son Robert. He is survived by his sons Mike and Glenn Corbett; a daughter, Jamie Barton; grandson, Brett Barton; and his brother Robert Corbett.

A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, September 24, at 8:30 AM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
