Raymond Howard Cann, 79, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (October 12, 2005) in Fairview Transitional Health Center, Grants Pass. Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Donald Leroy Oberlander
Donald Leroy Oberlander passed away on Jan. 5, 2006 at 91 years of age.

A memorial service will be held Saturday January 14, 2006 at Central Neighborhood Church located at 4777 S. Pacific Hwy in Phoenix, Oregon, Rev. Lee Saunders officiating. Donald was born in Bucyrus, Ohio on the 4th of July, 1914. It was said the whole nation celebrated his birthday. We sure did. His parents were Clell and Mable Oberlander. In 1937 he married Alice LaRue Foxall in Warren, Ohio. She passed away May 8, 1989 in Medford, Or. They lived in Bucyrus, Cleveland, and Warren, Ohio before moving to Rochester, Michigan where Don opened a sheet metal company with his brother Jack, fresh back from the Second World War. He was involved with the Scouts, worked to have cafeterias in schools, and built lockers for schools.

In 1950 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they found Jesus Christ as their Savior. They began to help church missionaries on the American Indian reservations in Arizona. Many of the Indians became personal friends. They worked mostly with the Pima Nation.

Mr. Oberlander was an ordained minister after completing a Doctorate at Bible school in Arizona. By trade he was a sheet metal engineer, winning many awards for his copper/stainless steel work.

They moved to Medford, Or. in 1967 where he continued to work in sheet metal. His grandson, Jim Oberlander of Pro-Weld has followed in his footsteps.

He has a son Donald in Tacoma, WA. Two daughters, Melody Stevens of Medford, Oregon and Alice Thompson of Hayward, California. In 1992 while visiting his daughter Alice in Hayward, California he met Elnora Harrison. They married in 1992 and made their home in Fremont, California. They visited Elnora's daughter and son-in law, Shirley and Frank Andress, in Framingham, Massachusetts on their honeymoon.

He was an outstanding man, a wonderful son, husband, father, and grandfather.

He had 14 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. If you had him for a friend you were blessed. He will be loved and remembered by all that knew him.

His parents, brother, two sisters and his first wife of 53 years preceded him in death.

E. Pauline Wooten
Private graveside services have been held for Ethel Pauline Wooten in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wooten, 100, died Sunday, January 8, 2006. She was born Nov. 11, 1905 in Knights Landing, CA. On May 30, 1926 in Sacramento, CA she married Frank Wooten, who preceded her in death in 1980.

She had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Medford since 1934, when she moved to Medford. She loved being a homemaker and entertaining many friends and family.

Survivors include: a son, Dave, of Yakima, WA; a sister, Kay Hatton, Sacramento; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission.

Emmitt Lee Drane, Jr.
Emmitt Lee Drane, Jr., son of Emmitt and Dorothy (Berry) Drane, died Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his home in Eagle Point.

Born September 19, 1944 in Oklahoma City, “Lee” attended public school and graduated from Putnam City High School in 1963. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force, including time in Europe, Lee returned home and obtained a Degree in Pharmacy from Southwestern State College at Weatherford, Oklahoma.

During an internship as a Pharmacist in Arizona, he met and married Constance Lynn “Connie” Bower. They lived in Arizona and Oklahoma for a while, but moved to Virginia where Lee obtained his Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy Degree, resulting in a position with the Veterans Administration and a transfer to San Francisco, CA. Over the next 20 years, Lee was promoted to Chief of Pharmacy at the V.A. Domiciliary. In 1979, they resided in White City and later moved to Eagle Point.

Lee enjoyed playing many sports such as golf, hand ball, and tennis. Fishing, spending time with family and friends, watching sports, and relaxing at his home in the country were among his favorite activities.

Lee was preceded in death by his father, Emmitt Lee Drane, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie; their son, Kevin and his wife, Jennifer; and three grandchildren: Andrew, Amanda, and Anthony. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy (Berry) Drane; his Uncle James W. “Bill” Berry of Oklahoma City, and many, many “Okie” cousins.

A viewing is set for Saturday, January 14th 1 pm – 3 pm at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

June E. Moeller
The graveside service for June E. Moeller will be held Monday, January 16, 2006 at 2:00 P.M., at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Rev. Jerry Gilmer of Eastwood Baptist Church, Medford, will officiate.

June E. Moeller, 81, of Phoenix, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at her residence.

Mrs. Moeller came to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from Richmond, CA, where she was a coordinator for Meals-On-Wheels. She also was a professional musician.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Gordon, Novato, CA; and three sisters, Eunice Williams and Joyce Loe, both of Talent, and Ellen Barry of Hemet, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy.

Keith Schulz
Keith Schulz died January 2, 2006 at home with his family by his side. He was 80.

Keith was born November 2, 1925 in Bryant, South Dakota. He grew up in Watertown, South Dakota until age 15 when his family moved to Medford where he has lived since. He graduated from Medford Senior High in January 1944. He served in the Marine Corp during WWII from February 1944 through August 1946. He spent part of his enlistment in China. Keith began his career in the automotive industry soon after the service. From 1952 he owned and operated Keith Schulz Garage and Diagnostic Center until his retirement in 1983.

In June 1948 he married Suzanne Campbell who survives. They were married in Reno, NV and returned there each anniversary for 55 years to celebrate.

Keith was a very hard working man and a very talented mechanic. After his retirement he enjoyed flying his airplane to their favorite places, traveling the world especially on cruise ships, walking his dogs and family outings at their cabin. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved the time he spent with them.

He is survived by his wife Sue and daughter Linda (Ken) MacDonald of Medford; two grandchildren, Amy (Hamilton) (Bill) Kircos of Phoenix, AZ, Clay Hamilton of Medford; two step-grandchildren, Marci (MacDonald) (Rick) Brown of Cooperstown, ND, Mark MacDonald of Bend; four great grandchildren, Andrea, Bridget, Madison and Makensie.

He was preceded in death by his son Terry and his parents Richard and Mary Schulz.

Keith, our husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held March 3, 2006. Details will be announced at a later date.

Laura Lehnhardt Wright
Laura Lehnhardt Wright was born October 15, 1905 and on that date in 2005 a celebration was held for her 100th birthday.

She died January 1, 2006. She was born in Tyndall, South Dakota and her family moved to California when she was two.

The Lehnhardt family lived first in Long Beach and then on a farm between Santa Ana and Garden Grove.

Laura was the oldest girl in a family of 11 children; she became a pioneer in many ways.

She was a member of the first graduating class at Garden Grove High School.

She graduated from the University of Redlands and later received her Masters degree from Chapman University.

She married Lewis W. Wright in 1929. They lived on five acres between Garden Grove and Anaheim for many years and then lived in Newport Beach, Long Beach, Morongo Valley, and Ventura. Lewis died in 1995. Laura taught elementary school and in the 70's was the first television science teacher for 3rd grade in the Anaheim Unified School district. She was a long time member of the Delta Kappa Gamma organization. Laura was an avid craft and art enthusiast and was involved in countless projects in her retirement years. All her life she was an active church member being involved where ever she lived. In 2002 she moved to the Rogue Valley Manor with her daughter and son-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Wright Gillespie and son-in-law Robert, of Medford; her son, James L. Wright and her daughter in law, Clydie, of Ventura, California; her grandchildren, Gail E. Gillespie, of Windsor, California, Thomas W. Gillespie and his wife, Veronica, of Roseburg, Oregon, Carol W. Smith and her husband, Christopher, of Romano, California, and John F. Wright, of Laguna Niguel, California; four great grandchildren, Jonathan and Jenna Gillespie, Allison and Andrew Smith; her two brothers, John Lehnhardt of Rogue River and Jim Lehnhardt of Medford; and two sisters, Margaret Hunt of Santa Ana, California and Ruth Pinneau of Northridge, California. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held in the auditorium of the Rogue Valley Manor on Saturday, January 21 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Rogue Valley Youth Choruses c/o Diane Newland, Treasurer, 440 Richard Way, Jacksonville, OR 97530 or the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation for the Health Center Fund, 1200 Mira Mar Avenue, Medford, OR 97504. Interment will be at Fairhaven cemetery in Santa Ana with a celebration of her life on February 25 at 11:00 in their chapel.

Ronald J. Smith
Ronald J. Smith, 73, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Redwood Christian Church (4995 Redwood Avenue, Grants Pass) with Pastor Kevin Bates officiating.

Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Oregon Affiliate, 380 SE Spokane Street, Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202 or to Shriners Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born October 12, 1932 in Grants Pass, attended schools here and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Bermuda. After the military he returned to Grants Pass where he embarked on a lifelong career with Southern Oregon Plywood/Medco. In 1958 he met Florene Killian and they were married on December 3, 1960 in Reno, Nevada. After 36 years with the mill, he retired in 1988 at the age of 55 having risen to the position of superintendent. He and his wife then began traveling the United States.

He was an avid sports fan and his hobbies included reading, watching TV, golfing, hiking and camping. He dedicated himself to his family and extended family and was an active member of Redwood Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, Florene Smith of Grants Pass, he is survived by three cherished children, Teresa Potts of Portland, Craig Smith of Grants Pass, and Marc Smith of Medford; a sister, Orene Kincaid of Grants Pass; four grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

Stuart W. Avery
Stuart W. Avery, 85, passed away on January 5, 2006 in Kirkland, WA. He was born October 31, 1920 in Pasadena, CA to Fredia and Wayland Avery, the second of three children.

In September of 1939, he married Margy McLane, his high school sweetheart. They had five children: Suzy (Walt) Meader of Woodinville, WA, Douglas Avery of Los Angeles and Leslee (Ray) Beausoleil of Redmond, WA. Grandchildren include: Julie (Mike) Young, Aimee Meader, Jenny (Mitch) Thomas, Jill Avery, Kristin (Mike) Patterson, Lauren (Ben) Jilbert, Kyle and Eve Beausoleil.

He served his country in the Army during WWII being one of the 1st units to land in Anizo, Italy. In 1945, he was honorably discharged at Lt. Colonel and stayed with the National Guard in California. He earned a BS degree from USC and taught Criminal Investigation at Pasadena City College. After 20 years of service, he retired from the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. in 1976 and moved to Medford.

In 1989, he married Joyce Barlow, whom he met while dancing with the Rambling Rogues Square Dance Club. Blending their families, Stu added four more children, Kathryn (Tom) Bettencourt of Shady Cove, Scott (Sue) Barlow of Central Point, Chad (Michelle) Barlow of Spanish Fork, UT and Linda (Lynn) Teuscher of Spanish Fork, UT; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Stu loved playing bridge, computers and always enjoyed having a dog. He enjoyed fishing in the Vancouver Islands and canning his own catch. He loved golfing and won golf tournaments. As a member of the R.V.C.C., all the while teaching several of his grandchildren to love the game also. Traveling in his motorhome took him to many states and Mexico. Other traveling took him to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Caribbean, Panama Canal and Alaska.

He is also survived by his brother, Wayland Avery. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margy Avery; his sister, Aileen; and two infant children, Diane and Ronny Avery.

Zella O. Tally
1905 - 2006
Zella Odelia Tally of Sacramento, CA, formerly of Pendleton & Central Point, Or. She died suddenly and quietly on Jan. 6th after a short illness.

Zella was born in Haines, Oregon on Aug. 2, 1905 to Henry and Ada Jane Williams Wallace and old pioneer farming family. She was 100 years old. On July 15, 1926, she married the late Eugene Tally. Together they had four sons, Kerwyn E., Richard L Tally of Myrtle Point, Oregon, Howard B. Tally of Sacramento, Ca and Robert W Tally (deceased). Other survivors include 12 Grandchildren, 34 great Grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was much beloved by all.

After graduating from high school in 1923 she earned a teaching certificate at Western Oregon state college in Monmouth, Oregon. She taught school in a one room school house in Pine Town, Oregon.

Zella attended Eastern Oregon College, majoring in accounting and later received her nursing license at Blue Mountain College in Pendleton. Zella worked for 6 years at the Pendleton State Mental Hospital as a nurse.

Zella enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching TV game shows and Sacramento Kings games after moving to Elk Grove area with her son Howard and wife Lynn in 2001.

A private family graveside service will be held Saturday Jan. 14, 2006 at 2:30 PM at the North Powder cemetery in North Powder, Oregon with the REV. Forrest Turner officiating.

Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association in her name in lieu of flowers. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Esther Tibbits
Esther Tibbits, 77, of White City passed away Thursday, January 12, 2006 at Providence Medford Medical Center. Arrangements by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Kathryn S. Sutherland
Kathryn S. Sutherland, age 91, of Medford died Saturday December 10, 2006 in Medford.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Royal Oak Retirement Center, 2180 Poplar Dr., Medford. Reception will follow. Arrangements by Abbey Funeral.

Loren S. Ritchie
Loren "Pinkie" Ritchie, 83, of Medford, passed away Wednesday, January 11, at his home. Arrangements by Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Steven Harold Smith
August 24, 1951 to January 5, 2006

Steve was born in Minneapolis, MN and moved to Oregon in 1967. Steve lived in Medford, OR until 1971 before moving to Portland, where he became a journeyman roofer with the Oregon Roofing Company. On May 20, 1972 he married Kathryn "Kathy" D. Bush of Jacksonville, OR. They made their home in Portland and then returned to the Rogue Valley, where they lived for the next 26 years. No services will be held at his request.

Audrey I. Zelner
Audrey I. Zelner, 84, died on January 20, 2006 in Ashland, Oregon.

She was born on May 27, 1921 in Bronx, New York and was raised there. In the 1960s, Audrey moved to Los Angeles, where she worked for many years in the television industry. She retired to Ashland in 1989, volunteering for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and continuing her lifelong interests in writing, travel, and food.

Audrey is survived by her nieces, Barbara Zelner of Washington, DC and Carole Zelner of New York, NY, and her nephew, Michael Zelner of Oakland, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Ethel Zelner, and her brother, Burton Zelner.

There will be no local services. By her request, Audrey's ashes will be put to rest in the Hudson River, near her former home in New York City, later this year.
