He was heard for many years during the 1960's giving the forecast over the local radio stations.

After his retirement, Ward and Elberta began an around-the-world journey to visit Presbyterian missions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He kept journals of those trips and was in contact with friends worldwide until his last days. After Elberta's passing he moved to Eldridge, Missouri, where he lived with his daughter Janice Pierce, and her husband Bill. Under their care and attention he enjoyed relatively good health and remained mobile and active almost to the end.

All who knew him will miss Ward. He was very active in the First Presbyterian Church at 8th and Holly, and as an avid gardener, he tended to many of the plantings there. Known and respected for his Christian generosity of spirit, for years, he visited shut-ins and the elderly on a consistent basis. Financially, he gave freely to the church, established a college scholarship fund for students at his alma mater High School, and provided funds for his granddaughters' college educations. He had ambitions of writing short stories for children, and after several years of writing and revising, he self-published a collection called Grandpa's Stories, with illustrations by his granddaughter Naomi Pierce.
