Richard Allen Goff

Richard Allen Goff died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Ashland. A date for a memorial service will be announced later in May.

He was born Jan. 17, 1913, in Bucklin, Kan., the son of Leroy Allen Goff and Mary Juliette (Mae) Brown. He graduated from Bucklin High School in 1931, received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State Teacher's College, Emporia, Kan. in 1936, a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1939, and a Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley in 1948. He taught at Northwest Junior High in Kansas City, Kan., and at the University of Oklahoma for 31 years, retiring as professor emeritus in 1978.

He served as chair of the department of zoology for four years, as pre-med advisor, and on the university planning committee, among other position, during his tenure.

His research included studies with radioisotopes and their molecular interaction on living cells. He contributed to our body of knowledge in embryology and histology. Between 1955 and 1959, he worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on radiation research. Mr. Goff was a member of numerous scientific and professional organizations.

He married Maxine Gresham in 1941 in Long Beach, Calif. During World War II, he worked as a design foreman at North American Aviation in Kansas City.

In 1983, he moved to Ashland, where he became active in the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters and the American Rock Garden Society. He was known for his outstanding rock garden and his generous plant gifts to other gardeners and to the Ashland Garden Club.

He is survived by his wife for 61 years, Maxine; two sons, Dane of Redwood City, Calif. and Brent of San Rafael, Calif.; his daughter-in-law, Sara; and two grandsons, Alex and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; his brother, Roger; and his sister, Nona.

Florence M. Minshall

The memorial service for Florence M. Minshall will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Medford Congregational Church. The Rev. Paul Robinson will officiate. Interment will be at Memory Gardens in Medford.

Mrs. Minshall, 90, of Medford, died April 10, 2003, in a foster home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Latgawa, c/o First United Methodist Church (FUMC), 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501, or the Medford Congregational Church Music Program, 1801 E. Jackson St., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912, in Turton, S.D., to George and Goldie Goldthorp. On Sept. 2, 1937, in McLaughlin, S.D., she married Alvin Minshall, who died in 1982. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1948 and lived in Jacksonville until 1988.

Mrs. Minshall was a school teacher in Medford and South Dakota. She had a lifelong interest in theater and was active in Medford Footlighters in the 1950s and '60s. She used her dramatic skills to produce plays for church groups, especially fund-raisers for Methodist Camp Latgawa.

She also directed children's plays for the annual Children's Festival, and worked in partnership on old-time melodramas at Pioneer Village in Jacksonville and Talent.

In 1983, she and her daughter and son-in-law turned the old Talent Feed Store into The Minshall Theater, now the home of Actors Theatre.

Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Lovitt, Medford; two sons, Bob, Portland, and Dick, Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Fabregas.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Catherine Beatrice Livingston

Catherine Beatrice Livingston, 90, of Ashlnad, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

James N. Hubbard Jr.

James N. Hubbard Jr. of Westwood, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003. Beloved husband of Hilda M. (Matthews), and dear father of James N. III of Newport News, Va., Lee Seater of Ashland, Virginia Rothwell of Columbia, Mo. and Jame Hubbard of Portland. Also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John's Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Ave. Westwood, Mass. 02090 or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Arrangements are under the direction of Folsom Funeral Home, Mass.

Spencer G. Bailey

Spencer G. Bailey, 67, of Medford, died Monday, April 28, 2003 at his home. No service is planned. Interment will be at Trail Pioneer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson County Animal Care and Control Center, 5595 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix, OR 97535.

He was born June 22, 1935, in Pottsville, Pa., to Joseph and Ruth Deiss Bailey. He graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City, Calif., and attended college in San Mateo, Calif. On Jan. 30, 1960, in Reno, Nev., he married Janice Hight, who survives.

Mr. Bailey worked for Ampex Corp. in Redwood City, Calif., for 19 years. He retired from Electric Research Institute in Palo Alto in 1992, after 16 years. He and his wife moved to the Rogue Valley after his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Bailey judged dachshund field trials in Washington, Oregon and California for many years. He also did volunteer work with Friends of the Animal Shelter.

He enjoyed dachshunds, the Dallas Cowboys, and fly fishing with the Fudpuckers.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Bailey, Medford.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Ronald E. Chaddock

The memorial service for Ronald Eugene Chaddock will be at noon Monday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Rev. Robert Larson will officiate.

Mr. Chaddock, 67, of Talent, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born March 15, 1936, in Watsonville, Calif., to Leo and Emma Chaddock. He attended California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, Calif.; Concordia University, Portland; and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind. On Aug. 31, 1958, he married Rowna M. Curran, who died in 1983. On Oct. 10, 1984, he married Pamela, who survives.

Mr. Chaddock served in the Lutheran ministry from 1961 through 1964 in Seattle, and Camarillo and Yucca Valley, Calif. After resigning from the ministry, he moved to the Rogue Valley in 1965 to work as a freelance graphic designer, writer and editor. Since then, he had written and published three books on the works of Shakespeare and created book covers, illustrations and educational materials for a number of American publishers.

His paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the Rogue Gallery, Medford; Eclectix Gallery, Jacksonville; Seattle Museum of Art; University of California Gallery of Art, Berkeley, Calif.; and the Southern California Gallery of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. His work is also represented in a number of private collections including Georgia-Pacific Corp., Crown Zellerbach, Kimberly-Clark, Burgess Meredith, Michael Learned, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Princeton University and Oxford University.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Eric and Kevin; a daughter, Rachel Gibson; two stepdaughters; his mother, Emma; a brother, Richard; five grandchildren; and a step-grandson.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
