WILLIAM GEORGE

William Gephart George of Crescent City, Calif., passed away July 28, 2000, after battling a long illness with bone cancer.

Bill was a veteran of WWII, a captain of the infantry that liberated Paris. He lived a full life as a naturalist and historian of his chosen home in the Wallowa Mountains of Northeast Oregon, where he lived in Enterprise for many years.

Survivors include his son William L. George; daughter-in-law Judy George; and grandsons Paul George of Smith River and Gabriel George of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

William was interred in Smith River cemetery. Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 23, Crescent City, CA. 95531.

KYLE ROWELL

Kyle Rowell, 20, son of Kay (Denny) Minard and Bob Rowell, died Monday, July 31, as a result of massive head injuries sustained in a car wreck in the Eugene area, Sunday, July 30.

Services will be Friday, Aug. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at The Church of Latter Day Saints in Junction City.

JANE STIREWALT

Jane Richie McAndie Stirewalt of Fossil died July 10, 2000, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

Jane was born in Portland on April 20, 1926. She attended Jefferson High School in Portland and graduated from Reed College in 1947 with as B.A. in Biology.

She lived in Oregon her entire life spending the last 28 years in the Spray area. She married Dewey L. Wilson in 1948 in Missoula Mont., and they rode horseback to Alaska for their honeymoon. They had three children, Bruce, Susan and Janet.

In 1970 she married Dave Stirewalt and moved to Spray to become a cowgirl. Jane was a rancher and a prominent water color painter. Among many places, her artwork has been displayed in the Portland Art Museum and the Central Oregon Rancher.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Wilson of Bend, daughters Sue Caswell of Enterprise and Jane Wilson of Spray, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The family suggest that remembrances be contributed to the Spray School for art supplies.

HARRY TIPPETT

Harry L. Tippett, 70, of Shelton, WA, died July 12, 2000. He was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Enterprise to Chris and Myrtle (Applington) Tippett.

Harry served in the U.S. Air Force, and retired as a systems analyst. He married Carol Tippett in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion, 40 et 8, National Association of Uniformed Services, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masons, Air Force Sargent Association, Retired Enlisted Association, Eagles, and Disabled Veterans.

Interests included involvement in various organizations, traveling, carpentry, fishing, friends and the outdoors. He loved to help people, including friends and family

Survivors include his wife Carol of Shelton, WA; sons Chris Tippett of Wenatchee, WA, Larry Tippett of Port Orchard, WA, and Kelly Tippett of Bonney Lake, WA; step-sons Steve Huffman of Camano Island, Washington, and Chris Huffman of Tumwater, WA; brother Ed Tippett of Joseph; sister Maxine Robusitz of Union, WA; and ten grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held July 22, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at the 40 et 8 Blue Ox Room, at 113 W. Cota, Shelton, Washington.

ALICE WARNOCK

Alice A. (Amey) Warnock, 93, of Medford passed on July 15, 2000.

Alice was born Sept.22, 1906 in Joseph to Wallowa County pioneers Clark and Myrta (Boner) Amey. She was their third and youngest child. She attended elementary and highschool in Enterprise, graduating as class president and yearbook editor in 1926. In later years, her family enjoyed her many stories about growing up in Wallowa County.

In Enterprise, on April 7, 1934, she married Robert C. Warnock of Imnaha. They honeymooned at the Millard/Rowe cabin at Wallowa Lake. Because Bob was a superintendent for the CCC camps involved in road and trail construction, such as the Hat Point road, they spent summers in Wallowa County and winters doing similar work on the Oregon coast.

Throughout their lives they always considered Wallowa County their "home". In 1946 they moved to Medford, where they settled to raised their two daughters.

Alice had a deep appreciation for the beauty of God's creation. She enjoyed camping, fishing, bird watching, gardening and especially sharing her flowers with others. Her generosity was well known to her family and friends.

She had a keen sense of humor that reflected her integrity as it never caused hurt, but did bring a lot of laughter and joy to others.

For many years, Alice was a member of Trinity Bible Church and her life reflected her deep Christian faith.

She was preceded in death by her sister Gladys Rennie, brother Eugene Amey and husband of 40 years, Bob.

Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Ken (Colleen) Struck and Mrs. Vern (Jeanne) Struck. She was especially proud of her four granddaughters and two great-grand daughters and their accomplishments.

Cherished nieces and nephews and their families fromWallowa County include Vera (Warnock) Talbott, Grant Warnock, Neil Warnock, Charlene (Warnock) McMannaman, Russell Amey, and Harold Amey.

For 93 years Alice blessed her family and friends with her love and prayers, she will be greatly missed.

ROY LEVERENZ

Roy Martin Leverenz, 84, of Wallowa, died on July 3, 2000.

Roy was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Redmond to Frederick Wilhelm Paul Leverenz and Mary Cornelia (Wilson) Leverenz. He served in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

Roy was a rancher and raised Hereford beef cattle in Wallowa County from 1948 to 1997, developing a registered Hereford beef herd. He also bred and raised registered Quarter horses. In 1984 he was voted Wallowa County Stockgrowers Grassman of the Year and in 1987 he was named Cattleman of the Year. He was also a lumberman for Weyerhauser Lumber Mill Corp.

He married Winifred (Jones) Leverenz at Texas Woman's University on August 10, 1943. He was previously married to Helen Parks French.

He was a life member of Wallowa Grange and was a Rose Degree recipient. He was also a member of the Wrangler Riding Club and the United Methodist Church in Wallowa.

Survivors include his wife; daughter Maxine Leverenz Lyon; four granddaughters, Cindy Scott Toivonen, Annette Scott Crittenden, Kelly Leverenz Tofelo and Rhonda Leverenz Nester; four great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Grant Leverenz and daughter Lynda Leverenz.

Burial was at Bramlet cemetery in Wallowa. Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

GARY ISAACSON

Gary Ross Isaacson, 55, of Fontana, Calif., died July 3, 2000, at his home.

Gary was born July 26, 1944, to Ross (Dick) and Ivy Schaeffer Isaacson in La Grande. He lived 15 years in Lostine before moving to Koskia, Idaho, in 1958, then to Lewiston in 1961.

He served in the U.S. Marines from 1962-1966. Gary married Joan Gorange Aug. 16, 1966, in Reno, Nev. Gary graduated from UCLA and Cal Tech in 1973. He was an auto mechanic instructor in high schools and auto electronic instructor in colleges for several years in southern California. He was then employed by the American Suzuki Motor Company in California. where he was training-information manager and traveled around the U.S. instructing mechanics at different Suzuki dealerships.

Survivors include his wife, daughter AnnaMay, and son Gary Ross, all of Fontana, CA; his mother of Pomeroy, WA; one brother, Robert of Elgin; two sisters, Jean Isaacson of Pomeroy, WA, and Sharon Harris of Enterprise.

Gary enjoyed coming to Wallowa County every summer, camping up the South Fork and riding horses in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, scuba diving, and working on vehicles.

JOHN BLANCHARD

John W. Blanchard, 52, of Wallowa, passed away Monday July 3, 2000, in Enterprise.

John was born March 9, 1948, in Tillamook to John Wesley and Wilma (Lobb) Blanchard. He married Ginny Bentley on June 14, 1969, in Hemlock in the Church of Nazarene. The couple had just celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary.

Mr Blanchard was a truck driver since the age of 18, and owned and operated his own log truck. He loved woodcutting, mechanical work and hosting family gatherings. He also hauled freight on the North Haul Rd./Dalton Hwy. Between Prudo Bay and Anchorage, Alaska, for 12 years.

He and Ginny moved to Wallowa in 1990. Mr Blanchard was a member of the Harvester's Nazarene Church in Elgin.

John is survived by his wife, Ginny of Wallowa; daughters Katie Blanchard of Nampa, Idaho, and Mindy Humphrey of Pendleton; sister Linda Newton of Port Angeles, Washington, and Paulette Apple of Tillamook; father and stepmother, John and Lavon Blanchard of Beaverton; several nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles and cousins. John's mother, Wilma, preceded him in death.

John was a big man with a sense of humor to match. He will be greatly missed.

Burial was at the Wallowa cemetery in Wallowa on July 9. Memorial contributions can be made to the John Blanchard Memorial Funds at Community Bank in Wallowa, the Loveland Funeral Chapel at 1508 4th St., La Grande, OR 97850, or directly to the family at P.O. Box 98, Wallowa, OR, 97885.

RALPH BOBBITT

Ralph J. Bobbitt, 77, of Enterprise, died June 28, 2000.

Ralph was born April 25, 1923 in Geneva, Neb., to Ralph Raymond and Irene Lorene (Clifford) Bobbitt. Ralph served in the U.S. Army as SSG during WWII. He was owner of Bobbitt's Machine Shop in Enterprise.

He is survived by his wife Norma (Smith) Bobbitt; sons Carl Bobbitt of Joseph and Thomas Bobbitt of Lostine; daughters Patricia Zbylut of Cove and Kathy Lepper of Enterprise; stepsons David Zimmer of Enterprise, Dick Bobbitt of Athena, Scott Thompson of Portland, Dan Thompson of Tucson, Ariz., John Thompson, Ariz., and Kelly Thompson of Winnemucca, Nev.; sisters Winona, Worthington, Colo., Doris Bailey of Nebraska and Frances Cartwright of Missoui; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be at Enterprise cemetery at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, with V.F.W. Post 4307 officiating. Donations may be made to Home Hospice, in care of Bollman Funereal Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

SELWYN BARTON

Selwyn L. Barton, 77, of Joseph, died at home Saturday, July 8, 2000.

He was born in Homestead on Aug. 8, 1922, to Everett Edson and Jessie Laura (Bass) Barton. He was a heavy construction operator. He served in the U.S. Air Force as 2nd Lt. during WWII, and married his wife, Norma, in 1951.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, daughter Janice Shirley of Lostine, son Jess Barton of Joseph, four grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by brothers Tracy Barton of Oakridge, Lauris Barton of Marcola, Greg Barton of Umatilla, Lovell Barton of Bend, Austin Barton of Battleground, WA, and sister Glenna Potts of Needles, Calif.

Services will be private at the request of the family. Donations may be made to Home Hospice in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828 or to Faith Community Church.

JOHN DELLSITE

Former Joseph resident, John Keating Dellsite, 93, of Grants Pass died Friday, July 7, 2000 at Three Rivers Community Hospital and Health Center in Grants Pass.

He was born Dec. 29, 1906, in Los Angeles, Calif., the seventh of 12 children born to Otto and Mamie Dellsite. On April 21, 1926, in Riverside, Calif., he married Mildred St. Clair, who preceded him in death on March 26, 1999. He worked as an operating engineer in Vernon, Calif., for 30 years. Upon his retirement in 1962 he moved to Joseph, where lived on 1.4 acres along the Wallowa River. In 1988 he moved to Grants Pass.

In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and deer hunting. He also like to repair and build many types of things. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons in California and Oregon, and received his 50-year Masonic pin in Grants Pass.

He is survived by son John Robert Dellsite of Grants Pass; daughter Joan Karol Smith of Cypress, CA; sister Peggy Matson of Redding, CA; six grandchildren, Chris Keating Dellsite of Portland, Steve Robert Dellsite of Grants Pass, Mark Allen Dellsite of Alta, Calif., David Kent Dellsite of Portland, Julie Lee Janesin of Crestline, Calif., and John Steven Smith of Corona, Calilf.; and 11 great grandchildren.

CAROL HEARNE

Carol Marie Hearne of Trouthaven on Wallowa Lake died July 7, 2000.

She was born in Cordova, Alaska, in 1930, the daughter of Ralph and Eva Clarkson. She married Walter Hearne on August 14, 1950. Together, they built and managed Trouthaven Resort on the west side of Wallowa Lake. Their business was a source of great pleasure for them as they developed dear friends who returned year after year, sometimes spanning three and four generations. Winters were spent in Scottsdale, Ariz. Where she and Walt worked and shared the friendship of Walt's four brothers and sisters.

Carol had a deep love for Wallowa Lake and the surrounding mountains. She enjoyed hiking, boating and water skiing. She and Walt took great pleasure in the wildlife around their home. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.

She is survived by her son and his wire, Brett and Eileen Hearne of Newport, daughter and her husband, Gail and Greg Johnson of Enterprise, six grandchildren, her extended family and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt in 1992, one brother and one sister.

A celebration of life is planned at 11 a.m., July 22, 2000 at Trouthaven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallowa Memorial Home Health Hospice Program or the charity of your choice.

KENNETH SASSER

Kenneth E. Sasser of Florence, formerly of Milton-Freewater, passed away July 9, 2000, at his home at the age of 74 years.

Memorial services will be Saturday, July 15, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Davidson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peace Harbor Hospice or any cancer prevention program through the funeral home.

Ken was born May 30, 1926, in Enterprise, the son of Newton and Grace Beeman Sasser. As a young boy he moved to Milton-Freewater with his parents and attended public schools in Milton-Freewater. After his schooling he joined he joined the U.S. Navy. He earned his wings and served as an aviation gunner.

After his discharge from the Navy, he married Virginia Brooks and the couple lived in Wallowa. Ken worked in the lumber industry and also attended Eastern Oregon College and Oregon State University. In 1964 he moved to Roseburg with his family. Ken retired from Champion International and moved to Florence in 1987. The couple spent the winter months in Yuma, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Sasser at the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathleen Sasser of Salem; three sisters, Margaret Langley, Fern Wilson and Veta Phillips, all of Milton-Freewater; three brothers, Keith Sasser of Roseburg, Jim Sasser of Milton-Freewater, and John Sasser of Seattle, WA; a granddaughter and her husband, Brooke and Clint Berry of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandson and his wife, Scott and Rachel Sasser of Los Angeles, CA; grandsons Matt Sasser of Portland and Greg Sasser of Boise, Idaho; two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Megan Berry, both of Lake Mary, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Myrtle Burrows and Verlie Sasser; and two brothers Kermit Sasser and Abe Sasser.

BARBARA GATES

Barbara Helen Gates, 85, of Joseph, died June 22, 2000, in La Grande.

She was born Feb. 28, 1915 in Monterey, Calif. and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur C. Adams and Flora Belle (Tenney) Adams. Survivors include daughter Susan L. Alford, grandson Harvey Lee Cooper, and great-granddaughter Shayna Lee Cooper, all of Joseph.

There will be no services at her request, and donations may be made to the charity of choice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home.
