William Barth

William Fred "Bill" Barth, 66, of Pendleton, died Dec. 13, 1999, at St. Anthony Hospital, of complications from congestive heart failure.

One of nine children, Mr. Barth was born May 2, 1933, in Rushville, Neb. to William and Florence Barth. He grew up on a farm there and graduated from Rushville High School.

Bill moved to Los Angeles, Calif., and joined the Air Force. After basic training, he was stationed at Geiger Air Force Base in Spokane, WA, where he met Joyce Keeler. They were married in Spokane on June 16, 1956. They moved to Inglewood, Calif., where Bill worked for Hughes Tool Company.

In 1958, they moved to Wallowa County and eventually bought a farm near Lostine. In 1963, Mr. and Mrs. Barth moved to Portland, where Bill attended a technical school, becoming an electronics technician. After graduation, the family moved to La Grande, where Bill was employed by Eastern Oregon College.

In 1966, he began work for Umatilla County E.S.D. and the family moved to the Pendleton area. Mr. Barth retired from the E.S.D. in 1992.

Bill enjoyed watching sports, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He also enjoyed playing softball and bowling, but his favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; daughters, Susan Sharp of Pendleton, Sharron of Santa Cruz, Calif., and son Will, of Colorado Springs; brothers, Jim and Raymond; sisters, Inez, Eunice and Phyllis; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Harold, and sisters, Irene and Zella.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Heart Association.

Bishop Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Maurice Weaver

Maurice Sebastian Weaver, 79, of Enterprise, passed away Dec. 6, 1999.

He was born June 20, 1920, at Joseph. He was a 1938 graduate of Enterprise High School.

Maurice worked at the Mutch Ratcliff Motor Co. until entering the Navy, where he served in WW II.. While in the Navy he worked on damaged ships and was a Military Policeman.

He married Helen Poulson on June 27, 1941, in Caldwell, Idaho He worked at the Marshall Wells store in Enterprise upon his return from the war and purchased a hardware store in the early 1950's. He was in the hardware business from 1945 until 1978.

Activities include being Fire Chief for the City of Enterprise for many years, and belonging to the Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge and Enterprise Community Church. He was city councilman, school board member, and a member of the Jaycees and Toastmasters. He belonged toVFW Post 18 for 54 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sebastian and Gladys Scott Weaver, and sister, Faye Klavano.

He is survived by his wife Helen Weaver of Enterprise; Jerry Weaver, wife Linda, and daughters, Shelli and Lauri, of Enterprise; Joyce Keeley and husband Patrick of Milwaukie; Kay Phillips, husband Mark, and sons Brady and Blake, of Hillsboro; Lee Weaver, wife Debbie, and sons Byran and Seth of Portland; and Stanley Weaver, wife Donna, and daughter Brianna, of Spokane.

He was cremated and memorial services were held Dec. 11, 1999, at the Enterprise Community Church. Contributions in his memory may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

Lois Rivers

Lois E. Rivers, 83, a homemaker and former owner of a Hells Canyon jet-boat excursion business, died Saturday afternoon at a Lewiston convalescent center of causes related to age.

She was born Oct. 20, 1916, at Westlake, Idaho, near Craigmont to Clarence and Connie Kauffman. She grew up in the Craigmont area and graduated from high school there in 1935. She was queen of Lewiston's Cherry Blossom Festival in the late 1930s.

After an early marriage ended in divorce, she worked for the American Bank in Lewiston. In 1946 she married Henry Albers and they farmed, ranched and operated a dairy on Russell Ridge north of Nezperce until his death in 1954. She maintained that farm until her death.

She married R.B. (Dick) Rivers on Jan. 16, 1955, in Dayton. They made their home in Lewiston and operated Rivers Navigation from 1959 to 1983, when they retired and sold the business to Beamer's Hells Canyon Tours. Their jet-boat tour business provided mail, freight and passenger service into Hells Canyon. The couple built Copper Creek Camp in Hells Canyon, which is still being used today, and she provided lunches to thousands of passengers.

After they retired, they traveled the Western U.S. and Alaska. She especially enjoyed visiting Nevada. She was known for her energy and friendly personality and had fun at everything she did. Her husband died in October 1998.

She is survived by four sons, Joe Rivers of Asotin, Tim Rivers of Lewiston, Bill Albers of Boise and Dennis Albers of Grangeville; one brother, Gordon Kauffman of Medford; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard S. (Swede) Rivers.

A memorial service was held at Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston. A grave side service followed at Normal Hill cemetery in Lewiston.

Al Nash

Al Nash of Joseph died Dec. 7, at age 67, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Alhambra, Calif., and moved to Portland in 1942.

On Nov. 7, 1949, he enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged on March 13, 1955. Al started out working for the ESCO Corporation in Portland when he was about 19 and spent 10 years with them. He married Joan Foster on Jan. 26, 1962. That same year he started his own janitorial business, and two years later added a carpet cleaning business.

For 34 years Al was a member of the Elks. For many years he served as a board member of the Carpet Cleaner's Institute of the Northwest, and for one year was President of the Oregon chapter.

Al lived in Portland until moving to Joseph, his wife's hometown, in 1991. Starting from scratch, he built Aladdin Carpet Cleaners once again, but he also took plenty of time off to hunt and fish all over Wallowa County.

Al served on the Board of Directors of the Prairie Creek cemetery including a time as director. He was still serving on the board at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, George of Boardman and Jerry of Milwaukie; daughters, Jeannie MacFarlane of Portland, Merla Lewis of Gresham, and Cindy Johnson of Bonners Ferry, Idaho: brothers, Bernie of La Mirada, Calif., Bob of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Ed of Fresno, CA; sisters, Margie Lively of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mary Mobley of Hemet, CA; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Nash and Mary O. Nash; sister, Laura Pritchard; and brother, Jack Nash.

Al was buried in Prairie Creek cemetery in Joseph on Dec. 11, 1999.

Estella Morton

Estella L. Morton, a long-time resident of Wallowa, passed away Dec. 13, 1999, at Wallowa Valley Care Center. She was born Sept. 20, 1902 at Russellville, AR., the daughter of Edward James and Minnie C. "Boren" Martin.

She married James R. Morton Nov. 14, 1929 at Portland. He precedes her in death.

Memorial services for Estella Morton will be held Friday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. at Wallowa United Methodist Church with private Interment of Cremains at Rose City cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Wallowa United Methodist Church in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

Margarette Follett

Margarette May Follett, age 82, of Elgin, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at her home in Elgin.

She was born Nov. 24, 1917, to David and Mary Elizabeth (Coe) McClune in Elgin. She graduated from Elgin High School and on Dec. 24, 1937, married Larry Follett in Enterprise. They lived in Elgin, except for a short time during which they lived in Anderson, Calif. Margarette worked as a secretary and bookkeeper.

She was a member of the Elgin Stampeders and in 1997 was Grand Marshal of the Elgin Stampede Parade. She was also a member of the Elgin School PTA.

She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always there for their activities. She also enjoyed reflecting on the old times with her friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Crouser of Elgin: grandchildren, LeeAnn and Jim Case, and Tonya and Russ Evans; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Follett, in 1997, son-in-law Gerald Crouser in 1996; and nine brothers and sisters.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Elgin Stampeders Hall in Elgin. Committal will follow at the Elgin cemetery. Family and friends were invited tol from 5 - 8 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Margarette Follette to the Gerald Crouser Memorial Scholarship fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande OR 97850.

Robert Butler

Robert Morrill Butler, 77, son of Cleo Myrtle Morrill and Alva Butler, passed away Nov. 7 1999 at his new Wallowa home. He was born Feb. 25, 1922 in Gallatin, MO.

Bob and his wife Jeanie resided for the past 17 years in Imnaha River Woods. He enjoyed fishing on the Snake River and his hobby of casting pewter chess sets. He was well known up and down Imnaha River for lending a helping hand, and he will be missed by all.

Bob served four years in the Navy during WW II. His ship, the USS Barry APD 29 was sunk May 25, 1945. He also served eight years in the air force during the Korean War. He served his country well.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Phoebe Butler; their two children, Eddie Butler and Linda Simson; their grandchildren, Robert Butler, Virginia Butler, Sue Butler, Elizabeth Simson, Deborah Simson, and Patricia Simson; a sister, Mildred Olin; and her three children, Joanne, Bobby and Conrad.

A Celebration of Life service was held Nov. 9, 1999 at the Wallowa Assembly of God Church with Pastor John Jefferies officiating.

Those who wish may make contributions in his memory to the Cancer Research Fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.

Marvin Chitty

Marvin L. Chitty, age 75, of Enterprise, passed away Nov. 20, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Toledo, Iowa, on Jan. 18, 1924, to Clifford and Dorothy Chitty. He served with the Army Air Corp as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He flew P47 Fighter's as escort to Bombers and ground troops over Normandy as well as other areas of Europe. Marvin was shot down by anti-aircraft on July 27, 1944. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Air Medal.

He met his wife, Eileen (Mike), in Europe when she was his nurse. They were married on Sept. 3, 1945 in West Acton, Mass.

Marvin graduated from the University of Maine in forestry. After working as a forester in Maine, he moved in 1960 to Enterprise where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1979 after living in Enterprise and Heppner, as well as Clifton, Douglas and Sierra Vista, Ariz.

After retiring Marvin and Mike enjoyed traveling. They eventually settled back in Wallowa County.

Survivors include his wife, Mike Chitty of Enterprise; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Dina Chitty of Enterprise; daughter and son-in-law Jill and Jon O'Donnell of Klamath Falls; son Jack Chitty of Granite Bay, Calif; son Mark Chitty of Folsom, CA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Dorothy Chitty.

Memorial Mass was held Nov. 24, 1999, at St. Katherine Catholic Church and disposition was at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main, Enterprise, OR 97828.

Lois Storoe

Lois M. Storoe, 76, of Joseph passed away Nov. 26, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 19, 1923, at Roscoe, S.D., the daughter of Amund and May "Clay" Grandahl. She moved with her family to Enterprise in 1936. Lois graduated from Enterprise High School in 1941, after which she attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, WA. There she met and married Malcom Powell Storoe on June 6, 1942 at Superior, Mont. He preceded her in death Dec. 9, 1964.

Lois was a very active 4-H leader for many years teaching livestock, sewing and knitting. She was a former member of the Rebecca's and Grange and a current member of the American Legion. Lois and her family enjoyed many outdoor activities which included horseback riding, camping and hunting. In later years she enjoyed her animals and especially her gardening and flowers.

Survivors include a son, Malcom Storoe of La Grande; daughters, Elaine Storoe of Pendleton, Sherrie Mathews of Wallowa; sister, Mina Betts of Kennewick; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lois was also preceded in death by sisters Macel Zamzow and Dorothy Hay.

Funeral services were held Dec. 1 at Joseph United Methodist Church with interment following at Prairie Creek cemetery near Joseph.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Wallowa County Humane Society in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise 97828.

Donald McCulloch

Donald McCulloch, 57, of Wallowa, passed away Nov. 16, 1999, at his home. He was born March 21, 1942, in Portland, the son of Frank and Ethel (Avery) McCulloch. He grew up in Sandy.

He is survived by his wife Thelma of Wallowa; children, Dreema Lotze, Tanya McCulloch and Donald, Jr., all of Wallowa; two grandchildren; brother, Frank of Estacada; and sisters, Roselda Bess of Portland and Sharon Shelton of Las Vegas.

At his request there will be no formal funeral and Interment of Cremains will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Gresham. Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of choice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828

Christine Zeigler

Christine Ziegler, 74, of Joseph, passed away Nov. 8, 1999. She was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Neuburg A.D., Germany.

She married Ralph Zeigler in July 1972 in Fallon, Nev. He preceded her in death in July 1998. Survivors include daughters, Sonja Ritz of Ohio and Anita Holmes of California; and son Fred Hauptman and daughter-in-law Marsha of Joseph.

Geraldine Mullenburg

Geraldine A. "Gerry: Mullenburg, 64, of Pilot Rock, passed away Nov. 7, 1999. She was born Jan. 28, 1935 in Mitchell, South Dakota.

She was married to Dean E. Mullenburg on May 17, 1955, in La Grande. She lived in Wallowa Lake State Park over nine years and was chairman of the Wallowa Lake Tourist Committee for several years. She lived in Coos Bay from 1969 to 1976. She and her husband moved to Pilot Rock on May 1, 1988. She had worked in banks for over 23 years.

Gerry was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She really enjoyed her family and also loved flowers, gardening and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband, Dean E. Mullenburg of Pilot Rock; sons, Curtis Mullenburg of Florence and Randy Mullenburg of Redmond, WA; 5 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tom, in 1993, and a grandson in 1983.

Funeral services were held Nov. 13 at Skyview Memorial Park, in Pendleton. Arrangements were in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.
