Cecil Walden

Cecil E. Walden, 82, died Nov. 13, 1999 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

He was born in La Grande on Sept. 12, 1917 to Ernest and Evelyn (Snook) Walden. He attended La Grande High School and began a lifetime interest in sports. Cecil distinguished himself in athletics earning a football scholarship to the University of Oregon where he played varsity football for four years. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

After graduation in 1940, he entered the Navy, becoming Commander of the USS Caravan and did mine sweeping escort duty in the South Pacific. In 1941 he married Jeannette Zens, who preceded him in death.

His civilian career was a 35 year affiliation with Crown Zellerbach Company. He was manager of the Zellerbach Paper Operation in Walla Walla before being transferred to Portland to head the Industrial Paper Division. He retired in 1979.

After retirement, he and his wife Fae moved to Wallowa County and built their home on Hurricane Creek. Cece loved the outdoors and was happiest casting his hand-tied flies in one of the local streams.

Cece enjoyed his activities in many associations which included the Joseph Valley Masonic Lodge #81, the Al Kader Shrine and the Baker Valley Scottish Rite. He was also a longtime member of the Portland Riverside Golf Club and Alpine Meadows of Enterprise, and a lifetime member of the La Grande Elks.

He is survived by his wife Fae of Enterprise; daughter Judy Walhen of Portland; son John Walden of Brewster, WA; granddaughter Lisa Engstrom; grandson Geoff Wathen; one great-grandson; and stepson Dennis Phelan and family of Sherwood. He was preceded in death by daughter Patricia Ahmad.

After cremation, internment will be a Masonic grave side service at the Island City cemetery, Island City, on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions in Cece's memory may be made to the Shiner Hospital in Portland.

Robert Butler

Robert Morrill Butler, age 77, passed away Nov. 7, 1999, at his new Wallowa home. He was born to Cleo Myrtle Morrill and Alva Butler Feb. 25, 1922, in Gallatin, Mo.

Bob and his wife Jeanie, resided for the past 17 years in Imnaha River Woods. He enjoyed fishing on the Snake River and his hobby of casting pewter chess sets. He was well known up and down the Imnaha River for lending a helping hand, and he will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Phoebe Butler: two children, Eddie Butler and Linda Simson: grandchildren, Robert Butler, Virginia Butler, Sue Butler, Elizabeth Simson, Deborah Simson, and Patricia Simson; his sister, Mildred Olin, and her three children, Joanne, Bobby and Conrad.

A Celebration of Life service was held Nov. 9, 1999 at Wallowa Assembly of God Church with Pastor John Jefferies officiating.

Those wish may make contributions, in memory of Robert Butler, to the Cancer Research fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande OR 97850.

Frank Snyder

Frank R. Snyder, 77, died Nov. 7, 1999, at his home in Asotin, Washington. He was born Nov. 25, 1921, to Jeff T. and Ruby (Graham) Snyder in Anatone, Washington.

He married Margelene L. Earl on May 7, 1944, at Lewiston, Idaho.

Frank was born near Cottonwood Creek on the Grande Ronde river in Washington. He attended school near where he was born up until the eighth grade and received his eighth grade diploma. He then attended school in Asotin, WA, and worked for Farrish Garage, and played his guitar around to town. He also worked for Delbert Delore tending sheep.

Frank moved to Joseph and worked for Harley Tucker as a ranch hand and helped bring in wild horses for the first Chief Joseph Days rodeo at Wallowa Lake. He attended trade school in Pendleton for two years and worked for a short time for Carl Sangster in Anatone, WA, where he did farming and cowboying. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and guarded prisoners in Utah. He guarded the first jet propelled fighter plane from Utah to California on the railroad. He was discharged in 1946.

In 1946, they moved to Kooskia, Idaho, where they farmed until 1948, and then moved to Paradise, where he ranched for one year. In 1949, they moved to the Lewiston orchards and he worked for the Camas Prairie Railroad until 1954. He began his career as a building contractor in 1954.

In later years, his son Frank A. (Pewee) Snyder joined him and Frank continued working until 1998, when ill health forced him to retire. In 1963 they moved to Kettle Falls, WA, where Marge and Frank helped operate a restaurant. Frank still continued building, and in 1971, they moved to Asotin, WA, where they have lived since.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing music on his guitar. He loved to be around people and he never knew a stranger.

Survivors include his wife, Margelene L. Snyder, of Asotin, WA; daughter, LaVaughn E. Keenan of Kettle Falls, WA; sons, Frank A. Snyder of Clarkston, Washington, and Earl J. Snyder of Colville, WA; brothers, Tom Snyder of Wallowa, and William Snyder of Corvallis; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

A sister, Lillian Beach, preceded him in death.

Visitation were scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, at Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel, with services, also at the Chapel, on Friday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m., and burial to follow at Vineland cemetery in Clarkston, WA, with Pastor Dick Riffle of Orchards Community Church officiating.

AUDRA AHRENS

Audra L. Ahrens, 82, a resident of Park Plaza Retirement Residence, 1400 Dalles Military Road, died Sept. 15, 1999, at St. Mary Medical Center.

The funeral was held Saturday at Shaeffer-Jensen Funeral Chapel, New Plymouth, Idaho, with burial in Parkview cemetery.

Mrs. Ahrens was born Feb. 18, 1917, on Smith Mountain, near Wallowa, to George W. and Lillie Riggle Wise. She attended Smith Mountain Elementary and Wallowa High School and earned a lifetime teacher's certificate from Eastern Oregon College.

On Dec. 24, 1938, she married Marvin L Ahrens in Payette, Idaho. They moved to Emmett, Idaho and then to New Plymouth in 1952 where they raised their family on a registered Brown Swiss dairy farm.

After moving into town, she worked for the Shaeffer-Jensen Funeral Chapel until retiring at 80. Mr Ahrens preceded her in death.

She sold her home there in 1998 nd moved to Walla Walla to be near her daughter, Judy Thompson.

Survivors include daughter, Judy; three sons Rick of Monroe, Ron of Wasilla, Alaska and Roc of Haines, Alaska; 10 grandchildren. Her great-granddaughter Ashlyn preceded her in death.

IVAN ISLEY

LeRoy C. Isley passed away Oct. 3, 1999, in Walla Walla, Washington. He was born Nov. 20, 1916 in Joseph, the son of LeRoy G. and Ethel V. (Scott) Isley.

He lived in Joseph until 1947.

Ivan was preceded in death by sister, Lela Colpitts; two brothers, Willis Isley, and Wilber Isley.

He is survived by wife Peggie Ann of Walla Walla; daughter Darlene Griffin of Pasco, WA; kfour sons, Wayne of Post Falls, Idaho, Ivan of Spokane, WA, Rockey Joe of Lacey, WA, and Russell of Walla Walla, Washington.

Services are to be held at Herring Funeral Home in Walla Walla, Washington. On Thursday, Oct. 7, at 11:00 a.m.

ROGER DECKER

Funeral services for Roger Decker, of Wallowa, will be held Friday Oct. 8, 11:30 a.m., at the Enterprise First Baptist Church, with burial to follow at the Wallowa cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of choice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main, Enterprise, Oregon 97828.

Georgia Estes

Georgia M. Estes, 93, passed away Sept. 8, 1999 at Alpine House in Joseph, where she had lived since December 1997, due to failing eyesight.

She lived in her own home for 67 years in Joseph until that time.

Mrs. Estes was born Aug. 2, 1906, in Asbury, Mo., to Leonard and Ina (Varney) Beard. The family moved to Joseph Creek in Wallowa County when she was two years old.

She married Hugh Estes on Feb. 2, 1925 in Enterprise. He preceded her in death in 1963.

She then worked various jobs which included working at Walter Brennan's Motel in Joseph and cooking at Wallowa Lake Lodge.

Georgia was known for her great raspberry patch and always raised a large garden. She loved her flowers. Her favorite hobby was quilting, making all her grandchildren one.

She was a devoted Christian, always there with a helping hand and thinking of others.

Funeral services were held Sept. 10, 1999 at the Joseph Baptist Church with pastor Larry Dodds officiating, and Ariss Wold at the piano. Pallbearers were Harold Lathrop, Mike Lathrop, Ted Sorensen, Leonard Samples, and John Alford, all men of the church. Graveside services followed at the Prairie Creek cemetery. A lovely family dinner was served by the ladies of the church.

She is survived by her daughters Fern Witherrite, and husband Norman, of Enterprise; Grace Gray of Joseph; son Orlen (Bud) Estes and wife Edith, of Enterprise; four grandsons, Gary Witherrite, Danny Gray, Larry and Allen Estes; three granddaughters, Linda (Witherrite) Jones, Lois (Gray) Ensminger, Janice (Gray) Reidel; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death in 1987 by son-in-law Tyrrell Gray.

Survivors include four brothers: Frank Beard of Walport, Ralph and Leo Beard of Asotin, WA, and Leonard Beard of Caldwell, Idaho; two sisters, Orpha Reimann of Klamath Falls, and Mabel Wamsley of Cinebar, Washington.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Joseph Baptist Church in Joseph, in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main, Enterprise, Oregon 97828.

Harlan Stubblefield

Harlan Ralph Stubblefield, 87, of Portland, passed away Nov. 18, 1999.

Harlan was born in Enterprise, the eldest of 10 children. He was a lumberman, working in both timber and sawmill operations, primarily in Eastern Oregon communities. He was employed a number of years by Burnt River Lumber Co. in Baker.

Harlan and his wife, Margaret, were also employed by the Circuit Court in Lane County (for the boys group home) from 1967 to 1970. The court director stated, "...he was extremely effective in working with the schools...(and was the) recipient of a letter ... as a result of his liaison with the schoo l... he was highly effective in working with ... delinquent youth."

Survivors include Keith of Salem; Karen Linfor of Sacramento; Joyce Jones of Lafayette; Marla Houston of Newberg; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Newberg on Nov. 23.

Genevieve Keyser

Genevieve Keyser, 85, of Wallowa, died Dec. 5, 1999, at the Joseph Care Center. She was born Feb. 2, 1914 at Seaside, the daughter of Glenn and Hilma "LaClarie" Sherod.

Genevieve married Clifford H. Keyser June 1, 1935 at Wallowa. He preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1987.

She is survived by son Bob of Portland; grandchildren Jeff and John of Beaverton; sister Donna Jean Emmons of Wallowa; nephewsDavid and Roger Emmons; and nieces Vickie Sutton and Jeanie Emmons.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Lung Association in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Wallowa Christian Church, with interment to follow at the Wallowa cemetery.

Maurice Weaver

Memorial services for Maurice Weaver, long-time Enterprise business owner, will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Enterprise Community Church with private Interment of Cremains.

Maurice passed away Dec. 6, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Hospital Foundation in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main, Enterprise, OR 97828.

GRACE PLASS

Grace Plass, 95, of La Grande and formerly of Pendleton, passed away Dec. 21, 2000, at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Grace was born Aug. 26, 1905, in Horse Junction, Idaho, to George E. and Carrie (Freeborn) Coleman. Her early years were spent in Wallowa., and then she lived in Portales, New Mexico, Hermiston and Pendleton. Grace married Herman Plass in La Grande in 1928.

She was a long time member of the Methodist Church in Pendleton and Hermiston. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Oregon State Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers Association. She loved her family get-togethers at Bear Creek and at the farm in Hermiston. She also loved playing bridge.

Grace is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Lou and Loren Hughes of La Grande; daughter Jo Anna Plass of Portland; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Sandra Plass of Great Falls, Mont.; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband, parents, brothers and sisters preceded he in death.

Graveside services were held Dec. 23 at the Wallowa cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held in June 30 at the Plass's Bear Creek cabin.

ANNA ERICSON

Anna Golda Ericson, 90, passed away Dec. 16, 2000, in a Sutherlin foster care home.

She was born June 10, 1010 in Flora to Ernest and Augusta (Dabrinsky) Sanday. She moved to San Diego Calif. in 1950. In November of 2000 she moved to Roseburg to be with her son.

Survivors include her son Robert E. Conklin of Roseburg; grandchildren Vikki Dawes of Sacramento, Calif., Robert Conklin of Union and Deana Proesch of Boise, Idaho; 11 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; niece Ella Mae Wilds; and nephews David Underwood of Richland, WA, and Dwight Underwood of Tacoma, Washington.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents Augusta and Ernest Sanday, sister Viva Underwood and brothers Ferdinand and Glenn Sanday.

Private interment was at the Enterprise cemetery, Enterprise. Chapel of the Firs in Sutherlin is in charge of arrangements. A memorial graveside will be held next summer.

TEDDIE HAYS

Graveside services for Teddie W. Hays of Irrigon will be held Friday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Lostine cemetery. Teddie died at his home on Dec. 23, 2000. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of choice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home. A full obituary will appear at a later date.

IZORA HALL

After graduating from Wallowa High School, Izora taught for three years in rural Wallowa County schools at Goff, Eden, and Smith Mountain. Then she attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth and received a normal school degree. She taught junior high school English in coastal Oregon towns 1927-49: in Myrtle Point for two years, Tillamook for one year, and then Coos Bay for 19 years. During those years she completed college by attending summer schools.

In 1949 Izora married Wade B. Hall of Wallowa, who worked for the U.S. Forest Service. They lived in Enterprise from 1950-54, where Izora taught high school English in 1953-54. The Halls lived in Baker City from 1954 until 1992, when they moved to Grande Ronde Retirement Residence in La Grande. Mr. Hall died in 1993. In 1997 Izora moved to Santa Barbara, Calif.

Izora's greatest interest and pleasure were her family and friends. She also loved the outdoors, horses, horseback riding, and trips in northeastern Oregon's rural areas and mountains. She was a devoted member of PEO Chapter CJ for more than 40 years and participated with Wade in Masonic organizations and activities.

Izora is survived by her stepdaughter Diane Hall Jackson of Santa Barbara, CA; her nieces Beverly Johnson Kane of Boise, Idaho and Donnajean Carla Gregory of Milwaukee; and the family of her deceased nephew Greg Johnson.

She will be interred in the Lostine cemetery next to her husband. A memorial service in northeastern Oregon will be held in spring 2001 to be announced at a later date. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to Baker County Library Foundation, Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation, or other local charities.
