HOLLIS BRIDWELL

Hollis Bridwell passed away at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on March 14 at the age of 84. He was born in Wallowa on Sept. 1, 1916, to Iris and George Bridwell. His pioneer family included Grandfather Frank Laverty, who discovered Laverty Lakes in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

He grew up in Portland and graduated from Jefferson High School. The family moved to California and Hollis became an accomplished musician, playing with famous bands such as Phil Harris and Jack Benny. He was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union and music was the love of his life.

Hollis and wife Georgia moved to Joseph when they retired in 1980. Hollis had spent many summers in Wallowa County hunting, fishing and golfing. He loved being here, and retirement here was a dream come true for both of them.

He was a member of the Wallowa County Band, enjoying the group, music and friendships he shared. He was also active in the Wallowa County Humane Society and a member of Alpine Meadows Golf Course. He spent many happy hours on the local golf course.

He is survived by his wife Georgia, who resides at Alpine House in Joseph, and a niece, Jacqueline Thorpe of Los Angeles, Calf.

Donations in his honor may be made through Bollman Funeral Home to the charity of choice.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 17, at the Bollman Funeral Home with interment following at Prairie Creek cemetery.

ROSS HANSON

Wallowa County native Ross James Hanson, 90, of Turner, died in Salem on March 15, 2001.

Ross was born in Enterprise the son of James and Mae Bowlby Hanson April 4, 1910.

Ross lived and grew up about 20 miles from Enterprise on Swamp Creek, on the 1, 800 acre Bowlby rock and granite ranch. The granite was used to build the Enterprise hotel and courthouse in Enterprise.

Ross graduated from Enterprise High School in 1928 he married Helen Hamm on Dec. 24, 1932 in Enterprise. In 1946 Ross and Helen moved into Enterprise, and he bought the Enterprise Transfer Trucking Corp. Ross sold the truck company in 1953 and the family farm in 1955. Ross then went to work for the Wallowa Road Department for 21 years, retiring in 1975.

In 1992 Ross and Helen moved to Turner to be near family.

Ross was very active with the Wallowa County Wrangler Drill Team; everyone said Ross was a true cowboy and was very close to his animals. Ross was an only child so his horse and dog was very important to him as a child. Ross was also a member of the Christian Church in Enterprise.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Turner; daughters, Belva Swanson of Turner and Nancy Johnson of Gresham; grandchildren, James, Jeffrey and David Swanson, Eileen Palke, Eric and Aaron Johnson and Angela Oxenrider; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Turner Christian Church, Turner. Interment will be in the Enterprise cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Turner Retirement Home in Ross Hanson's name. The Bollman funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.

ARTHENE MASON

Arthene Maude Mason, 84, of Enterprise, passed away March 18, 2001, of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 15, 1916 to Simeon Vancil and Iona Mae (Bridwell) Cray of Wallowa. Arthene married Vern W. Mason April 27, 1947, in Wallowa.

She had a good singing voice and even made some records in the 1950's. She completed a three year nursing course at St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton in 1937 and became an RN. She also enjoyed many years of bowling and bridge with her friends.

Arthene and Vern owned and operated the Wallowa's City Pharmacy from about 1957 to 1973 w hen they retired. She also worked as a library assistant for Wallowa High School a number of years.

Arthene was preceded in death by her parents, Simeon and Iona; her husband, Vern; two sisters Thelma and Iona; and two brothers, Pearl and Ernest.

She is survived by her sons, Michael and Mark Mason of Joseph; daughters Judith Anne Marchall of Dalzell, S.C., and Mary Ann Abercrombie of Sunnyside, Washington. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Katherine Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, with Father Peter Fernando officiating. Interment followed at Wallowa cemetery, Wallowa.

WILLARD MALLORY

Willard Harve Mallory, 84, passed away on March 20, 2001, at his home in Troy. Funeral services are pending.

RALPH BEARD

Ralph E. Beard passed away on March 19, 2001 at his home in Asotin, Washington.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in Boyd Hall at the fair grounds in Asotin, Washington. A potluck dinner will follow. Memorial contributions can be made to the Enterprise Special Choir.

VIRGINIA JONES

Virginia "Ginger" Lee Jones of Eugene, died March 30, 2001, at the age of 56.

She was born on July 12, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, to James and Dorothy Dunlap Jeans, while her father was serving in the U.S. Navy. She was proud to be a member of a pioneer family whose roots in Oregon date to 1850.

She was a Certified Nurse's Assistant, and recently lived in Enterprise before moving to Eugene. Ginger was a loving mother and grandmother. Her hobbies revolved around her children and grandchildren, and she enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading, and camping in the Wallowa Mountains. She attended Grace Bible Church in Elgin.

She married Alvin Harold Buck in 1962, and they later divorced. She married Clayton Allen Jones in 1976, and they later divorced.

Survivors include four daughters, Wendy Molina of Springfield, Kyria Cropper of Park City, Utah, and Shannon Buck and Dawn Rivers, both of Eugene; two sons, Archie Buck of Lostine and Stormy Jones of Eugene; a sister, Mary Jeans of Eugene; and 14 grandchildren. A grandchild, Jared Isaiah Molina, preceded her in death.

Services were held April 3. Memorial contributions may be made to Dawn's Adult Foster Care, 475 Howard Ave., Eugene OR 97405.

ILAH BOOKOUT

Ilah B. Bookout, 90, of Milton-Freewater, died April 10, 2001.

She was born March 11, 1911, in Wallowa to John and Carrie German Couch. Her early years were spent on a ranch in the Leap District of Wallowa County, where she developed a great love for horses and the outdoors. Ilah attended schools in Wallowa and graduated from Wallowa High School in 1929.

In 1940 she married Herman Bookout of Milton-Freewater, and they resided on a farm near there until 1954, when they moved to the Willamette Valley near Salem. She spent many years there raising her family and creating beautiful flower gardens. Her husband passed away in June of 1989. She moved to Milton-Freewater in 1994 to be near her family.

She is survived by her son, Michael Bookout of Puyallup, WA; two sisters, Lois Rambo of Milton-Freewater and May Hoffman of Bryan, Texas; two granddaughters, Allison and Annie Bookout of Virginia; and two great-granddaughters.

Memorial services were held April 14, and burial took place at the Belcrest Memorial Park in Sale. Contributions can be made to the First Christian Church through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR.

CAROLINE BORGERDING

Caroline Borgerding, 77, died April 12, 2001, at her home in Belgrade, Minn. She is a former resident of Imnaha area.

Caroline was born May 23, 1923, to Bert and Grace (Stearns) Burnquist in Fort Dodge, Iowa, a few minutes after her twin brother Boyd.

Caroline grew up and attended high school in Fort Dodge, Iowa. After high school she attended Wellesley College in Boston, Mass. In 1945 she graduated with a degree in Economics.

She then accepted a job with Standard Oil of California, and later became head of the travel department.

She moved to San Francisco with two friends which led to her meeting Howard Borgerding, who was stationed at the Naval Air Station at Alameda. They had a brief courtship and married three months later. In her 14 years as a Navy wife the family moved eight times criss-crossing the country and on to England and back. During these years she and Howard had five children.

In 1965 Howard retired from the Navy and the family moved to Imnaha to pursue cattle ranching. Caroline became a ranch wife and belonged to many civic and church organizations, including serving as president of the Wallowa County CattleWomen's and Church Alter Society. In 1986 Caroline and Howard moved to Belgrade, Minn., and she became president of the Christian Mothers, Readers Club, and an original member of the Belgrade Centennial Committee.

Caroline is survived by her husband, Howard of Belgrade, Minn.; daughters, Catherine Zollman of Joseph, Kirsten Borgerding, Joseph and Julia Borgerding, St. Paul, Minn.; sons, Chris, Joseph, and Eric, Imnaha; and 10 grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 20, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade, Minn. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Belgrade Centennial Memorial.

SYLVIA FOSTER

Funeral services for Sylvia Foster of Joseph will be held Monday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View Christian Church, with interment to follow at the Enterprise cemetery. Sylvia died April 14, 2001. A full obituary will be published next week.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Mountain View Christian Church in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

MARY YOKOM

Mary Magdeline Yokom, 88, former resident of Enterprise, died at Covenant Care Homes in Pendleton on April 16, 2001.

She was born Nov. 5, 1912, at Empire, Mich., to Adolph and Elodie (Schonbert) Van Beveren. Mary grew up in Baker City and attended St. Francis Academy where she excelled in playing basketball left-handed. She graduated from St. Francis Academy and then married Dexter Aden Yokum at Baker City.

Mary worked there at Millers Confectionary and Basche-Sage Hardware. She and her husband lived in Canyon City and owned the Canyon City Pastime, and then Prairie City where they owned the Prairie City Pastime. They moved to Mt. Vernon where they owned and operated a dairy, and later moved to Enterprise and owned and operated the Range Rider Tavern from 1954 to 1979, when they retired. While in Enterprise, they also raised sheep and cattle and helped with 4-H sheep showings. They moved to Hermiston in 1989 and Dexter died in 1993. Mary was a member of the Catholic Church and Altar Society, the Soroptimist, and a Life Member of the Enterprise Elks Lodge #1829. She also enjoyed snow skiing.

She is survived by a son Dexter Eden Yokom, Jr., of Hermiston, daughters, Mary Ann Warnock of Echo, and Elodie Banks of Pendleton, sisters, Germay Guthrie of Hermiston and Stella De Bel of Silverton, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dexter of 52 years, son-in-law Ron Broadfoot in 1996, sister Florene Crabill and a brother Albert Van Beveren.

Mass of Christian Burial was April 20 in Hermiston, with burial at the Hermiston cemetery. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Center of Oregon.

SYLVIA FOSTER

Sylvia Irilla Foster, a Wallowa County native, passed away April 14, 2001 in Enterprise.

Sylvia was born June 20, 1913 to Willis E. and Leora Agnes Daggett on Alder Slope in an old house on property that is still in the family. Her parents came to the county in 1908, the first year the train came from La Grande. She attended Alder Slope Grade School and Enterprise High School.

In the fall after her graduation in 1932, she married Lyle Keith Boner. They lived with Lyle's parents the first winter, later to live in a cabin on the Boner place, that is presently owned by the Bowerman heirs. Dale W. Boner was born to them while living at this location in 1934.

When her father passed away in 1936, she and Lyle moved to Leora's farm to reside there for five years. Gary Mack Boner was born to them in 1937.

In 1941 the couple purchased the Castor farm on Hurricane Creek, later selling a portion to the City of Joseph for the airport. Sylvia was to reside at this location for the remainder of her life.

Lyle passed away in 1973 and Sylvia married Roy Leonard Foster in 1980. Roy passed away in 1993.

Sylvia was very active in community affairs, belonging to the Grange for nearly 60 years, the Joseph Methodist church, Stone Crafters Rock Club, CowBelles, Stitch and Chatter Club and a ladies' painting group for many years. She became a good painter in the 16 years of meeting each week, and as she said, "kept up on the news."

Sylvia is survived by her two sons, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Ruth Agnes Dressler. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 23, with burial at Enterprise cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation or to your charity of choice.

ALMA CRAWFORD

Alma Fay Crawford passed away on April 22, 2001, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise at the age of 91.

Alma Crawford was born on Dec. 3, 1909, to Andrew M. and Lily Wright Johnson at Craigmont, Idaho. She was educated in the Craigmont Schools until her senior year in high school when the family moved to Moscow, Idaho, where she completed high school. Mrs. Crawford obtained a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Idaho.

On July 25, 1939, she married Emory Crawford of Wallowa County. The couple worked in the canyons on the McClaran lower Lightning Creek Ranch, on the Jack Tippett Cow Creek Ranch and on the Jidge Tippett Joseph Creek Ranch.

In 1946 they moved to the Shell Ranch near Wallowa, then on to farm on Powwatka Ridge between Wallowa and Troy.

The couple eventually moved to the Pendleton/Milton-Freewater area where they engaged in several farming endeavors before Alma went to work for the Washington Department of Human Services, from which she retired.

Alma was active in the Ferndale Grange and the Rebekah Lodge #175 pf Milton-Freewater. She loved gardening, canning, quilting and traveling.

Alma is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Shirley Crawford of Enterprise, and Michael and Sally Crawford of Puyallup, WA; four grandchildren, Rob Crawford and David Crawford, both of Halfway, Jama Kolosick of Lawrence, Kan. and Thomas Crawford of Toledo; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Mary Johnson of Modesto, CA; and one sister, Thelma Anderson of Enterprise, where the two lived together until Alma entered the care center.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Emory; sisters Freda and Ina; and brothers Fred, Carl and Cecil.

At Mrs. Crawford's request, no funeral service will be held. A memorial gathering for her family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Enterprise Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wallowa Valley Care Center through the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 West Main St., Enterprise OR 97828.

IVAN ROBERTS

Enterprise native and lifelong resident Ivan Roberts passed away on April 6, 2001.

He was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Enterprise to Everett and Esther (Surber) Roberts. He married Agnes Leona Norton on Aug. 26, 1944. Ivan served in the U. S. Marine Corps from May 1944 until February 1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Okinawa.

Ivan was a farmer, logger and sawmill worker finally retiring from Boise Cascade Joseph mill. He was born, lived, raised his family, and passed away in the community he loved.

He was a life member and still active after 30 years in VFW Eagle Cap Post 4307. He served on the County Republican Central Committee for more than 20 years, and was an officer in the local sawmill union.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Agnes of Enterprise; daughter Susan and son Everett and wife Dana of Enterprise; son John and wife Nancy of Joseph; son Errol and wife Barbara of La Grande; grandchildren Tami, Tai, Tonya, Tess, Alicia, Stefany, Jennifer, Samantha, Jacob, Micky, Craig, Chad and Cody; 11 great-grandchildren, ;sisters Mary Lee Farnsworth and Helen Windsor; and brother Charles Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bessie Stickney, Lydia Humphreys, Marie O'Malley, Agnes Peterson, June Marks. He was joined in death by sister Lillian Burnham on April 8, 2001.

Services were held April 11, 2001, jointly with his sister Lillian's at the Enterprise Community Church. Interment will be at the Wallowa cemetery

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the WWII Memorial or the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St, Enterprise, OR.
