David Gehrke

David Adran Gehrke, 48, died Feb. 20, 2001, of a massive heart attack at Marshall, WA, near Spokane.

He was born Aug. 20, 1952, in Wenatchee to Eugene Otto and Joan Brandt Gehrke. The Gehrke family moved to the Clarkston area in 1952 and lived at Woodland, Idaho, and Lyle, WA, until they settled in Asotin in 1961. David graduated from Asotin High School in 1970.

David joined the U.S. Army after graduation and served in B Co 701st Maintenance Battalion, lst Infantry Division Forward (The Big Red One), in Germany and Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal with one service star and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1974 from Ft. Riley, Kansas.

David was married to Penny Orine Wilson in 1977. In June 1991, he met his first daughter, Lisa for the first time.

Following his discharge, David lived at St. Maries, Washington. In 1975 he joined his father in the family business, Two Rivers Construction. Since moving to Asotin in 1996 he established MD Services that included his computer business, Asotin Storage Rentals and a distributorship for industrial lubricants. He was the server administrator and developed Web sites for Comport Computer Services at Clarkston. He also operated equipment for Barnes, Inc., of Lewiston at the time of his death.

David was a member of the Clarkston Moose Lodge. He served with Carlin Economic Development from December 1994 to May 1996 and was PTA president while there. He served on the Asotin Water Rate Study Committee last year.

David is survived by his wife, Penny; son, Brandt Eugene; daughter, Brianna Irene; his mother, Joan all at the family home in Asotin; his daughters, Kelly Elizabeth Gehrke of Lewiston and Lisa and Tim Millikin and their children, Levi and Pryce Millikin, all of Glendo, WY; two sisters, Jeanie and Max Mallory and children, Erin and Clay of Wallowa, and Irene and Joe Appleton and children JoDeeAnn and Charles (Chaz) of Asotin; a brother, Mike and Sue Gehrke and children, John and Kevan of Asotin; and his grandmother, Caroline Brandt of Irrigon.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Gehrke, his maternal grandfather, Herman Brandt and paternal grandparents, Emil and Veva Gehrke.

Memorial donations may be made to Mooseheart in care of the Clarkston Moose or in benefit of his family at Twin River National Bank, Asotin Branch.

MARY BECHTEL

Mary Bechtel, formerly of Wallowa, died February 27, 2001, at Salem Nursing Home. Funeral services are pending at the Bollman Funeral Home.

VERNON LYNCH

Vernon Darrow VanAusdle Lynch, 65, of Enterprise passed away at home March 20, 2001, of natural causes.

Vernon was born April 27, 1935, to Vernon Elmer Lynch and Irene Fanning of Pomeroy, Washington.

He was married to Evelyn (Dyment) of Enterprise on Feb. 17, 2001.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Irene.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Enterprise; sons, Gary and David of Mt. Vernon, Wash; daughters, Kathy Bisson of Sedro Woolley, WA, Dorene Hoffman of Loveland, Colo. and Nicole VanAusdle of Enterprise; stepdaughter Carrie Ryan of Syracuse, Utah; stepsons Scott Dyment, Bellevue, Wash, Todd Dyment of Redmond, Wash, and Warren Fairchild of Sammamish, WA; sisters Shirley White of Terry, Miss., and Linda Orr of Bonney Lake, WA; double cousin, John Lynch of Pomeroy, WA; many grandchildren; one great- grandson; uncles and aunts; and other relatives.

Services were held March 24 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint of Walla Walla, WA, with Bishop Casey Goodwin officiating.

Donations can be made to the family to help defray medical costs in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W Main St., Enterprise OR 97828.

WILLARD MALLORY

Willard H. Mallory, 84, of Troy, passed away March 20, 2001, of heart failure.

He was born Oct. 11, 1916, at Anatone, WA, to Harve and Lena Kiesecker Mallory. He attended Rays Ferry and Anatone schools. He married Iris Fordice on Sept. 15, 1939.

He and his wife ranched with their son, Doug, at Anatone, WA, and Troy until his death. He packed elk hunters and ran cattle in the Wenaha River area for more than 50 years. He served many years on the Troy School District Board of Directors and as a 4-H leader.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Iris, and children Donavon and Doug Mallory, Laverne Garrett, Ann Sangster, Billie Havens, and Nancy Sangster. He had 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Perry, parents and one grandson, Willard James.

Memorials in his name are suggested to the Asotin-Anatone Education Foundation or the Asotin County Historical Society.

A memorial service was held at the Enterprise Elks Lodge. Bollman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

ELIAS LIVELY

Elias Leonard "Perk" Lively, 82, of Prairie City passed away March 22, 2001.

He was born May 14, 1918 to Elias Walter "Fisher" and Etta Pearl (Sannar) Lively at Promise.

Elias attended school at Promise for eight years, and graduated from Wallowa High School in 1936.

He married Mildred (Bartmess) Lively on Feb. 20, 1939, in Walla Walla, Washington.

Elias was preceded in death by his parents Elias and Etta Lively, sister Iris (Lively) Nuxall, and brothers Jack and Elvyn Lively.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Prairie City; sons Gary Lively of Prairie City and Gale Lively of Dayton; daughter Donna (Lively) Lovell of Prairie City; sisters Agnes (Lively) Fuller of Union and Opal (Lively) Pruitt of Portland; brother, Eugene (Gene) of Springfield, Robert (Bob) of Union.

Funeral services were held March 26 at Driskill Memorial Chapel. Interment was March 27, 2001, at the Wallowa cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Prairie City Pee Wee Baseball League thru Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canon, John Day OR 97845.

JERRY JUSTICE

Enterprise native Jerome "Jerry" Justice, 60, of Wilsonville died of a massive heart attack in his home March 13, 2001.

Memorial services were held March 19 at the Meridian United Church of Christ in Wilsonville. Interment was in the Willamette National cemetery.

Mr. Justice was born Nov. 2, 1940, at Enterprise to Pearl and George Justice.

He attended Enterprise School all 12 grade, graduating in 1958, the year that was the same as the town's population.

His activities ranged from playing basketball and participating in plays to serving on student council and as class officers, including president, and being delegate to Boys State.

He was very active in the Future Farmers of America, from livestock judging to public speaking. He held several local, district and state FFA offices, including chapter president, state vice president and chairman of the state championship parliamentary team.

He attended Oregon State College from 1959 to 1963, then moved to Portland and married Patricia Kallberg of St. Helens. The couple eventually divorced.

Jerry served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

In 1973 Justice married June L. Fisher from Portland. Their daughter, Tara, was born in 1975. June passed away in 1996.

Justice worked for Multnomah County in the 1970's as assistant to the Chairman of the Board, Mike Gliesan. In 1975 he became the assistant to the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners. From 1976 until his retirement in 1996, he worked primarily in labor negotiations and as a lobbyist both at the state legislature and in Washington, D.C.

He became owner of Justice Miniature Roses in 1982. He bought an 18-acre miniature rose farm at Wilsonville which served individual and wholesale clients, such as nurseries and garden stores. Justice Miniature Roses produced a catalog since 1983. The latest full-color edition listed over 200 varieties, many of them patented and award winning. Fifteen of the varieties were created by Justice himself through his rose breeding program of hybridization. Along the way he was president of the Portland Rose Society.

Survivors include his father George Justice of Enterprise; a daughter, Tara Justice of Wilsonville; ans a stepsister, Lana Arnold, and her husband J.R. Arnold of Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1967 and by his grandfather Ben Weathers, Wallowa County's "Old Timer" who died in 1973. It was Weathers who had named Jerry at his birth in the old Bowlby stone hospital on the hill overlooking Enterprise.

Remembrances for Jerry Justice can be made to the charity of choice.

LYLE CHERRY

Lyle Donald Cherry, 84, passed away on Sept. 25, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Born in Nilewood, Ill., on Dec. 15, 1914, the son of Harland and Mae Cherry.

On June 25, 1937, he married Velma Ruth Sherwood in Davenport, Washington. Lyle worked on the Grand Coulee Dam at the time, where the newlyweds made their first home. They then moved to Grandview, WA, where Lyle worked on a cattle ranch before buying his own ranch in Whitstram, Washington. Here they welcomed the birth of their first two children.

In Sept. of 1943 they purchased and moved to their ranch property in Lostine, Ore. where they farmed until retirement.

Lyle was active in the South Fork Grange for many years, and he and Velma belonged to the Alpine Square Dancers. Retirement winters were spent in Yuma, Ariz., where Lyle excelled in pool, shuffleboard, and horseshoes, winning many championships. Lyle enjoyed marathon pinochle games with friends and family, teaching many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to play.

His wonderful smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Velma; and sons, David of Lostine, Randy and wife Grace of Lostine, Gale and wife Fran of Portland; daughter Carol and husband Ed Wallace of Enterprise; brother Merle and wife Leona Cherry of Yakima, WA; sister Hazel and husband Ted Mehrer of Seattle, ; sister-in-law Florence Cherry of Yakima; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his infant grandson Greg Cherry and brothers Carlos, Gerald, Wayne and Bob Cherry.

In memory of Lyle's great love for children, remembrances can be made to Safe Harbors to help abused children, in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main, Enterprise, OR 97828.

At Lyle's request, a private Celebration of His Life will be held by the immediate family.

CHARLIE WARD

Charlie C. Ward, 83, of Pendleton died Sept. 13, 1999, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Milton-Freewater.

He was born Nov. 2, 1915, at Lostine, to Henry William and Frances Nellie Ward Downs.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include special friend Reta Richards of Pendleton; sons, Ed Ward of Salem and Ober Ward and Robert Ward, both of Pendleton; daughter, Charlene Colebank of Foresthill, CA; sister, Madeline Running of Lynnwood, WA; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

MERYLE NUXALL

Meryle J. Nuxall, 72, of Wallowa died Sept. 21, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Born April 17, 1927 at Greencreek, Idaho, he was the son of Adolph H. and Susan Marie "Sattler" Nuxall.

He married Nadine E. Hammack on Aug. 23, 1947 at Enterprise. He worked at the Wallowa High School as custodian until his retirement.

He is preceded in death by his wife Nadine and son Ray.

He is survived by son Don of Enterprise; daughters, Judy Nuxall of Donald and Lynn Hall of Wallowa; five grandchildren; and sister Imo Gene Bianco of Esticadia Park, Colo.

Rosary was held Monday evening, Sept. 27, at the Bollman Funeral Home, with Mass the following morning at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Wallowa followed by Vault Interment at the Enterprise cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

MARCUS MILLER

Marcus C. Miller passed away Aug. 14, 1999 in the French Hospital Rehabilitation Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was born Sept. 1, 1905 in Wallowa.

He joined the Mt. Vernon Community Church in 1932 and transferred to the Community Church in Enterprise in 1945.

While County Roadmaster and while boarding in Mt. Vernon, he met and married Artice Stockdale, a primary school teacher, on Dec. 27, 1936.

Their son, Stan Marcus was born April 11, 1940 in John Day. They then moved to Boise, Idaho, where Marcus worked on the Mountain Home Air Base during the war. They then moved to Enterprise to be near Artice's only brother, Alvah, and his family. In 1944, while they were still living in Enterprise, they secured their daughter, Yvonne Janet.

The Millers built a new home in town and were all active in school, church, Lodge and community work until 1955 when they sold their home and moved to Portland seeking college advantages for Stan and Yvonne.

Survivors include; son, Stan and wife Marcia, with four children and four grandchildren; daughter Yvonne and husband Dan Strickwerda with five children and three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

All of these have been the pride and joy of Marcus and Article Miller.

ALBERT LANGLITZ

Albert "Speed" Benjamin Langlitz, 88, a long-time resident of Enterprise, died Sept. 21, 1999, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise.

Funeral services for Mr. Langlitz were held Sept. 25 in the Cole-Strommer Funeral Home, Baker City, where Mr. Denny Langford, President of the Blue Mt. Old Time Fiddlers officiated .Vault interment was in Eagle Valley cemetery in Richland.

Mr. Langlitz was born June 11, 1911 in Salvador, Saskatchewan, Canada, son of Henry Leon and Catharina (Poffenroth) Langlitz. He received his naturalization in Spokane, Washington, April 29, 1944 and served during World War ll in the US Army. Mr. Langlitz worked on the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, he also worked s a welder and heavy mechanic for the International Union #701, Operating Engineers which he received his 45 year pin.

He had a love for fiddling and making fiddles. It was very important to him to see his great granddaughters learn the old time method of fiddling. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Blue mt. Fiddlers Association, A.F.L.-C.I.O. #701, disabled American Veterans and the Sheriff's Assoc.

Mr. Langlitz is survived by his daughter, Judy Langlitz, Enterprise; son Paul of Heppner; sisters, Selma James of Springfield, Esther Spicer of Monmouth; sister-in-law, Nellie Langlitz, Baker City; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Catharine; brothers, Henry John, Dan Leon, and Walt Leon Langlitz.
