Val Joseph Vanderkin

Val Joseph Vanderkin died Dec. 27, 2000, of cancer at age 74. A private gathering will be held. Mr. Vanderkin was born June 12, 1926, in Port Townsend, Wash. He grew up in the Portland area and attended Roosevelt High School. He was a dance director with Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire studios in Portland, in Texas, and on the East Coast. He choreographed off-Broadway shows.

From 1958 to 1979 he was employed at Continental Can Company in Portland and worked in the lithograph department. He taught Reiki. He moved to Yucca Valley, Calif., in 1998. In 1956, he married Rosilee Smith; they were together 21 years.

Survivors include his partner, Tom Hughes; daughters, Teresa Vanderkin and Kelly Klimp; sister, Jean Brock; brothers, Richard, George and Dean; and two grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to any hospice.

Elva Celia Wilcox

A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Elva Celia Wilcox, who died Jan. 9 at age 88. Mrs. Wilcox was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Corvallis. Her maiden name was Johnson. She moved to Portland as a young woman and was a self-employed home health aide until retiring. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1992. In about 1942, she married Homer Wilcox; he died in 1979.

Survivors include her daughter, Norene Odom; stepson, Harold Andrews; sister, Alice Debow; brother, George Johnson; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Speaks Memorial Chapel in Independence, Mo.

Donna Mae Anderegg

Donna Mae Anderegg died Jan. 5, 2001, at age 72. No service will be held. Mrs. Anderegg was born May 30, 1928, in Berlin, N.D. Her maiden name was Nelson. She graduated from Gresham High School and attended Oregon State University. She and her husband operated a dairy farm in the Bend and Madras areas for about 10 years before moving to Gresham in 1965. She worked about 12 years as a secretary, first for the Lynch School District and later for the West Gresham School District. She was a member of Gresham United Methodist Church. In 1951, she married Robert Anderegg.

She is survived by her husband; sons Rick, Tim and Jeff; daughter, Cheryl Whisler; brother, Warren Nelson; sister, Beatrice Stellges; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

The family suggests contributions to Gresham United Methodist Church. Disposition was by burial at Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements are by Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel.

Floyd E. Dorris

Floyd E. Dorris of Portland died Jan. 1, 2001, at age 88. No services will be held. Mr. Dorris was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Albany. He graduated from the University of Oregon and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was a sales manager at Nabisco Inc. He married Dorothy Hall in 1939; she died in 1995.

Survivors include his half-sister, Barbara Phomin; three nieces; and one nephew.

Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Caldwell Colonial Chapel.

Ernest A. Dussault

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Milwaukie for Ernest A. Dussault, who died Jan. 11 at age 88. Mr. Dussault was born June 1, 1912, in International Falls, Minn. He moved to Portland in 1943 and was a field engineer for Machinery Sales for about 35 years, retiring in 1977. In 1932, he married Myrtle Walker; she died in 1999.

Survivors include his daughter Lori Carr; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. His daughter Beverly Finch died in 1997.

Interment will be in Gethsemani Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Knights of Columbus. Arrangements are by Peake Memorial Chapel.

Lloyd Milton Findling

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home in Kelso, Wash., for Lloyd Milton Findling, 41, whose body was found Jan. 9. He apparently died from a drug overdose. Mr. Findling was born June 21, 1959, in Longview, Wash. He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Pacific Fiber in Longview and then for an air-conditioning company in Portland, where he lived for the past seven years.

Survivors include his son, J.R. Virnig; parents, Robert and Carol; brothers, Alvin, Bobby and Eric; and grandmother, Virginia Colley.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to any alcohol or drug rehabilitation program.

Christopher A. George

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church for Christopher A. George, who died Jan. 2 at age 32. Mr. George was born March 13, 1968, in California and grew up in Portland. He graduated from Wilson High School. He lived in Portland, Olympia and for the past year in Oakland, Calif.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Debra and Richard Adami; father, Ken; and sisters, Nicole Adami and Sarah Adami.

The family suggests remembrances to the Christopher A. George Music Scholarship at any U.S. Bank. Arrangements are by Nautilus Society in Oakland.

Mildred Augusta Johnson

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Beaverton for Mildred Augusta Johnson, who died Jan. 11 at age 83. Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Portland. Her maiden name was Heiberg. She graduated from Grant High School and attended the University of Washington. She was a homemaker and a member of the church. In 1942, she married Stanley O. Johnson.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Barbara M. Richardson and Peggy Jones; son, Richard; brother, Harry Heiberg; sister, Ruth Haglan; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Hopewell Hospice. Arrangements are by Portland Memorial Funeral Home.

Brother Hilary La Tour

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Mont La Salle in Napa, Calif., for Brother Hilary La Tour, who died Jan. 10 at age 72. Brother La Tour was born Aug. 4, 1928, in Eureka, Calif. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. A member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, he taught in the brothers' schools for many years, including at La Salle High School in Milwaukie in the 1980s.

Survivors include cousins.

Remembrances are suggested for disadvantaged students in care of the De La Salle Institute Foundation, P.O. Box 3720, Napa, CA 94558.

Richard Earl Matheson

A funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash., for Richard Earl Matheson, who died Jan. 9 of cancer at age 59. Mr. Matheson was born Aug. 16, 1941, in Indianapolis and moved to Vancouver as a child. He attended Hudson's Bay High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He was an inspector for Bingham Willamette for 22 years and then 11 years for Boeing, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the East Vancouver United Methodist Church. In 1959, he married Connie Ruppenthal.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Belinda Richardson, Cindy Small and Natalie Small; mother, Josephine Evans; brothers, Larry, Ron and Howard; sister, Joyce Graham; and four grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Hospice Southwest.

The Rev. Mitsuko Okazaki

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Riverview Abbey Funeral Home for Mitsuko Okazaki, who died Jan. 10 at age 88. The Rev. Okazaki was born Oct. 15, 1912, in Kagawa, Japan. Her maiden name was Kikuno. She immigrated to Portland in 1929. During World War II, she was interned by the U.S. government in the Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho. She returned to Portland, where she was a homemaker and the bookkeeper for her family's wholesale produce business until 1979. She also was a minister of the Tenrikyo Portland Church for more than 20 years. In 1934, she married Frank Okazaki; he died in 1997.

Survivors include her daughter Ruby Ishida; sons, Victor and Richard; brother, Ryohei Kikuno; sister, Michie Katayama; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her daughter Mae Sasaki died in 1988.

Interment is in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to her church.

Luella G. Payne

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes for Luella G. Payne, who died Jan. 10 at age 79. Mrs. Payne was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Montrose, S.D. Her maiden name was Boom. She moved to Portland in 1941 and worked in the shipyards during World War II. She was a homemaker. In 1947, she married Edgar L. Payne.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Jackie Lee; son, Jerry L.; sisters, Agnes Folkerts, Betty Jane Folkerts and Mary Alice Campbell; brothers, Lyle Boom, Edwin Boom, Richard Boom, James Boom and Gene Boom; and five grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation.

John H. Schroder Jr.

John H. Schroder Jr. died Jan. 4, 2001, at age 79. No service will be held. Mr. Schroder was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Moberly, Mo., where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II in Italy. After the war, he graduated from Moberly College. He lived in Illinois and in Washington before moving in 1963 to Portland. He was a self-employed carpenter for about 35 years, retiring about 1985. In 1955, he married Thelma Strand.

Survivors include his wife; sons, John H. III and Andy; daughters, Ann Davis, April Dooley and Amy Baker; and 10 grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Hospice Southwest in Vancouver, Wash. Arrangements are by Simes Mortuaries in Coolidge, Ariz.
