Miriam 'Mamie' Sulman

Miriam "Mamie" Sulman died Jan. 3, 2001, at age 76. No service will be held. Mrs. Sulman was born June 10, 1924, in Encampment, Wyo. Her maiden name was Bashore. She was raised in Lewiston, Idaho. She later moved to Seattle, where she did war-related work for Boeing Aircraft. She was a homemaker. She moved in 1959 to Portland. In 1945, she married Alvin Sulman.

Survivors include her husband; son, Wilson; brother, Dave Bashore; sister, Mildred Olson; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Annie Ross House. Arrangements were by Wilhelm Funeral Home.

Earl Spencer Sweet

Earl Spencer Sweet died Jan. 3, 2001, of cancer at age 71. A private service was held. Mr. Sweet was born April 16, 1929, in Portland. He attended the University of Oregon and the University of Portland, and received a law degree from the Northwestern College of Law in Portland. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He worked for the Portland Development Commission and the Department of Veterans Affairs, retiring in 1992. He married Ellin Messolonghites in 1981.

Survivors include his wife; step-sons, Nicholas Hastings and Ned Hastings; and brothers, John E. and James V.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Kaiser Permanente Hospice. Arrangements are by Alpine Cremation and Burial Services.

Nancy Lee Taylor

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Brighter Day Christian Center for Nancy Lee Taylor, who died Jan. 7 at age 92. Mrs. Taylor was born May 8, 1908, in Lake, Miss. Her maiden name was Buckley. She moved to Portland in 1941 and was a housekeeper for the Ambassador Hotel until the mid-1960s. She cared for foster children for the state of Oregon and the Boys and Girls Aid Society. She served on the mothers board of the church, where she was a member. In 1948, she married Pleas Taylor; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Taylor Simpson; son, Gregory Sr.; brothers, Wilson Buckley, Clarence Buckley and Felton Buckley; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Elaine Arvada Wease

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Elaine Arvada Wease, who died Jan. 12 at age 89. Mrs. Wease was born Aug. 25, 1911, in Waupaca, Wis., and moved to Portland as a child. Her maiden name was Howard. She graduated from Commerce High School. A saxophonist, she performed with the Novak Sisters and other Portland groups. She and her husband owned Metro Radio & TV in North Portland from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. In 1937, she married Robert Marion Wease; he died in 1986.

Survivors include her daughter, Arlene Banner; and two grandchildren.

Interment is in Park Hill cemetery in Vancouver, Wash. The family suggests remembrances to the Ronald McDonald House.

Katy Frances Wilson

Katy Frances Wilson died Jan. 3, 2001, at age 83. No service will be held. Mrs. Wilson was born March 17, 1917, in Johnson County, Ky., and was raised in Minnesota. Her maiden name was Castle. She lived in California before moving in 1960 to Beaverton and in 1999 to Vancouver, Wash. She was a homemaker. In 1937, she married Stanley Wilson; he died in 1978.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Miller and Jacquelyn Malmquist; sister, Loretta Stewart; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements were by Skyline Funeral Home.

Willa Mae Winslow

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in St. Andrew Catholic Church for Willa Mae Winslow, who died Jan. 10 at age 88. Mrs. Winslow was born May 21, 1912, in Tacoma. Her maiden name was Smith. She lived in Pasco, Wash., before moving to Portland in the 1940s. She was a homemaker and domestic housekeeper. She was a member of the church.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Y.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Gethsemani Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Howard De Vaul

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Howard De Vaul, who died Jan. 9 at age 77. Mr. De Vaul was born May 3, 1923, in Chicago. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army, and served as a medic for 21 years, including in World War II, in the Korean War and in the Vietnam War, retiring in 1971. He earned a Purple Heart and a Distinguished Service Cross. He moved to Portland from Tacoma in 1992. In 1972, he married Lucille Kendig.

Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Sandra Sallady and Jackie Grey; stepson, James Grey; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery.

Alice Naomi Fenske

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the Canby Adult Center for Alice Naomi Fenske, who died Jan. 6 of Parkinson's disease at age 79. Mrs. Fenske was born March 20, 1921, in St. Paul. Her maiden name was Sprogis. She moved to Oregon City in 1952, to Canby in 1963 and to Oakridge in 1995. She held several positions, including custodian and supervisor, for Birds Eye and Smuckers for 20 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Canby. In 1939, she married Albert F. Fenske; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, Marvin J.; daughters, Janice M. Flack and Shirley A. Boston; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Interment is in Zion Memorial cemetery in Canby. The family suggests remembrances to the Parkinson Center of Oregon at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Judith R. Ferguson

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Vancouver, Wash., for Judith R. "Judy" Ferguson, who died Jan. 11 of cancer at age 57. Mrs. Ferguson was born Oct. 11, 1943, in Klamath Falls. Her maiden name was Ferguson. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Portland State University. In 1994, she moved to Vancouver, Wash., where she was a social worker for the Southwest Washington Medical Center for the last year and a volunteer social worker for the Vancouver YWCA Safe Choice Program. In 1996, she married Wayne C. Pierce.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Julianne Douglas and Susan Douglas Kelley; stepdaughter, Rochelle A. Pierce; son, Ken Binder; mother, Elinor Jones; sister, Virginia Jones; brothers, Bob Jones, Dan Jones, Richard Jones and Everett Ballard; and one grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Vancouver YWCA Safe Choice Program, 3609 Main St., Vancouver, WA 98663.

Dianne Marie Finklein

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Peace Lutheran Church in Astoria for Dianne Marie Finklein, who died Jan. 9 in Corvallis of a pulmonary embolism at age 26. Miss Finklein was born Sept. 20, 1974, in Vancouver, Wash. She graduated in 1992 from Warrenton High School and in 1996 from Western Oregon State College. She was in her second years of a master's degree program in college student services administration at Oregon State University, where she was resident hall director for Sackett Hall. In the early 1990s, she was a sales representative for Selectron for a year and a half.

Survivors include her parents, Terry and Chris; brother, Mike; and grandparents, Anne and Joseph Sobba-Brohan, Walter and Joan Sobba, and Lois and Lee Robinson.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Residence Life Program in care of Oregon State University Foundation, P.O. Box 1438, Corvallis, OR 97339. Arrangements are by Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Astoria.

Elmer I. Gregerson

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Forest Grove Memorial Chapel for Elmer I. Gregerson, who died Jan. 9 at age 93. Mr. Gregerson was born Dec. 15, 1907, in Badger, Minn. In 1956, he moved to Enterprise and was a logger, millworker and then a custodian for the Wallowa School District until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Enterprise. He moved in 1999 to Forest Grove. In 1956, he married Arnolda L. Schultz.

Survivors include his wife; stepson, Orvin R. Erickson; brother, Alvin; sister, Clarice Peterson; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Forest View cemetery in Forest Grove. The family suggests remembrances to the American Diabetes Association.

Amber R. Love

A gathering will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the family home for Amber R. Love, who died Jan. 7 of melanoma at age 25. Ms. Love was born July 18, 1975, in Portland. She graduated from Sunset High School and was a clerk for PolyOne in Vancouver, Wash., for the past year.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Pam and Rich Meily; father, Emery; sister, Jessica; grandmother, Olga McNally; and companion, Michael Bean.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Amber Love Special Fund at any Bank of America to support the Manna Relief Fund. Arrangements are by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.

Wade L. Randall

A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Wilhelm Funeral Home for Wade L. Randall, who died Jan. 11 at age 93. Mr. Randall was born Sept. 4, 1907, in Somerset, Ky. He homesteaded in Big Timber, Mont., as a young man and lived in St. Helens and Selah, Wash., before moving to Portland in 1957. He drove trucks for Exley Produce for 23 years, retiring in 1973. In 1929, he married Lenore Finch.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Mildred DeMers; son, William; sister, Effie Cole; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. His daughter, Stella Shaddon, died in 1978, and his son, Harold, died in 1990.

Interment will be in Yakima. The family suggests remembrances to the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center at Providence Portland Medical Center.
