J. Milo 'Mike' Walter

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for J. Milo "Mike" Walter, who died Jan. 3 at age 88. Mr. Walter was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Iroquios, S.D. He was raised in South Dakota and moved to the Portland area in 1930. He graduated from Lincoln High School and from Oregon State College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. He moved to Lebanon in the late 1930s and worked for Willamette Industries, retiring as a manager after 27 years. He served on the board of the Linn-Benton Education Service District for 30 years. He also served on the Crofoot School Board in Lebanon. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Lebanon. He returned to Portland in 1999. In 1949, he married Ruth E. Patterson, she died in 1988.

Survivors include his daughters, Kathy, Lori and Jennifer; stepdaughter, Susan Smith; stepson, Stephen Schrader; brother, Donald E.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the American Heart Association.

Norman Joseph Whitworth

Norman Joseph Whitworth died Dec. 6, 2000, at age 62 from complications after a heart attack. A service was held. Mr. Whitworth was born Jan. 5, 1938, in St. Ignatius, Mont., and grew up in Centralia, Wash. He graduated from Western Washington and San Jose State universities. In the early 1960s, he moved to the Portland area, where he owned Norm Whitworth Turf Products for the past 30 years. He was a board member and past president of the Northwest Turfgrass Association, and he served on the board of directors for Musser International Turfgrass Foundation. In 1983, he married Linda Hummels.

Survivors include his wife; son, Brad; stepsons, Ted Reijonen and Keven Reijonen; sister, Jane Mitchell; brother, Jim; and one grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Musser International Turfgrass Foundation, P.O. Box 124, Sharon Center, OH 44274.

Helga D. Carsrud

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Forest View cemetery in Forest Grove for Helga D. Carsrud, who died Dec. 31, 2000, at age 80. Mrs. Carsrud was born Jan. 26, 1920, in Glasgow, Mont., and grew up in Del Norte, Colo. Her maiden name was Hansen. She was a licensed practical nurse for a clinic in Denver for 40 years. She moved to Forest Grove after retiring in 1985. She lived in Hillsboro for the past three years.

Survivors include her brother, Thomas I. Hansen; and sister, Constance G. Patterson.

The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Forest Grove Memorial Chapel.

Paul O. Crown

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Longview, Wash., for Paul O. Crown, who died Dec. 30, 2000, at age 74. Mr. Crown was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Thief River Falls, Minn. During World War II, he worked in the Kaiser shipyards, and he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Western States Chiropractic College in 1956 and had a private practice in Portland until 1969. He was the college's clinic director from 1962 until 1967. After moving in 1969 to Kalama, Wash., he was a chemical analyst for Reynolds Metals until retiring in 1988. He was a member of the church. In 1952, he married Joyce Davenport.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Steve, Ron and Glen; daughter, Jean; and eight grandchildren. His son William P. died in 1953, and his son David J. died in 1963.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to his church, 2021 Washington Way, Longview, WA 98632. Arrangements are by Cascade Northwest Funeral Chapel in Kelso, Wash.

Joseph H. Durst

A service will be at noon Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Joseph H. Durst, who died Jan. 3 of cancer at age 74. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Salem. Mr. Durst was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Portland. He graduated in 1943 from Grant High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines. Afterward, he was a purchasing agent for Chipman Chemical for 14 years, then a communications consultant for Pacific Northwest Bell for 20 years, retiring in 1983. He moved in 1966 to Salem, where he was a member of the church.

He served on the current board of directors of Willamette Lutheran Homes, was past president and board member of Sundance Meadows, was past commander of Willamette River Power Squadron and past board member of Capitol Health Care. In 1950, he married Luan Hinsz.

Survivors include his wife; son, Robert; daughter, Barbara Hargand; and five grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances to the memorial fund of his church. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Jack Jacob Hecker

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Peake Memorial Chapel for Jack Jacob Hecker, who died Dec. 27, 2000, of emphysema and pneumonia at age 88. Mr. Hecker was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Mandan, N.D. He moved in 1920 to Portland. He was a crew leader for Northwest Natural Gas for 30 years before his retirement in 1978. In 1947, he married Agnes Reeves.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Kristin Eakins and Cynthia; sisters, Elizabeth Bardin and Inez; and four grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Lung Association of Oregon.

Viola L. Larson

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Young's Funeral Home for Viola L. Larson, who died Dec. 29, 2000, of kidney cancer at age 70. Mrs. Larson was born July 8, 1930, on a farm near Fosston, Minn. Her maiden name was Colsen. She moved to Scholls in 1955 and to Tigard in 1960. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Tigard. In 1955, she married Clarence Larson.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Cheryl L. and Laura Bowen; son, Duane; brother, Edward Colsen; sisters, Ethel Johnson and Marian Haugen; and four grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.

Barbara Ludders

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Lake Grove Presbyterian Church for Barbara Ludders, who died Dec. 30, 2000, at age 80. Mrs. Ludders was born Aug. 18, 1920, in Bradford, Pa. Her maiden name was Bell. She attended Whitman College in Walla Walla. She moved to Lake Oswego in 1948, where she was a librarian at Lake Oswego Junior High School and Lakeridge High School until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the church and a volunteer for the Lake Oswego Public Library until 1998, when she moved to Newberg. In 1943, she married W.C. Ludders.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Heidi Jones; sons, Bruce Munro-Ludders, J. Richard and John; sister, Nancy Evans; brother, William Bell Jr.; and 11 grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Lake Oswego Public Library. Arrangements are by Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Frances M. Paranto

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Valley Hope Community Church in Hillsboro for Frances M. Paranto, who died Dec. 28, 2000, at age 79. Mrs. Paranto was born July 14, 1921, in Moorhead, Minn. Her maiden name was Carlson. During World War II, she worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., and then was a homemaker. She moved to Hillsboro in 1953, to Mesa, Ariz., in 1971 and to Tigard in 1990. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Mesa. She married Walt Paranto in 1942.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Marilyn Karels; brothers, Art Carlson and Ray Carlson; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home.

Walter Carl Peterson

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Home in Oregon City for Walter Carl Peterson, who died Dec. 31, 2000, at age 81. Mr. Peterson was born March 29, 1919, in Portland. He graduated from Oregon City High School and worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Montana. He was a welder for Crown Zellerbach for about 35 years, retiring in 1981. In 1944, he married Ella Anderson.

Survivors include his wife; son, Gary; daughter, Gloria Garbutt; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Private interment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to the Lions Eye Bank of Oregon.

Robert G. Reed Sr.

A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Robert G. Reed Sr., who died Dec. 30, 2000, of acute respiratory distress syndrome at age 59. Mr. Reed was born Nov. 24, 1941, in McMinnville and spent most of his life in Roseburg and Portland. He served in the U.S. Army and had been a counselor for Dammasch State Hospital.

Survivors include his sons, Robert G. Jr. and Michael J.; daughter, Theresa Sisco; stepsons, John Lowden and Donald Lowden; brothers, Frank, Jack, Joseph, Gib and Ronald; former wife, Patricia A. Rambo; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment is in Willamette National cemetery.

Clarence H. Samuelson

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Adams Chapel in River View cemetery for Clarence H. Samuelson, who died Dec. 26, 2000, at age 88. Mr. Samuelson was born Jan. 11, 1912, in Ishpeming, Mich. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He moved in 1950 to Portland and was a garment cutter for White Stag until 1967 and then Dennis Uniform until retiring in 1977. In 1936, he married Valerie Dodgson.

Survivors include his wife; daughter-in-law; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. His son, Bruce A., died in 1998.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Peake Memorial Chapel.

Stephen W. Stimson

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Beaverton Foursquare Church for Stephen W. Stimson, who died Dec. 30, 2000, in an automobile accident at age 50. Mr. Stimson was born Sept. 29, 1950, in Pasadena, Calif. He attended Pasadena City College, graduated from California State University at Los Angeles and did graduate work at Pepperdine University. He lived in San Gabriel and Redwood City, Calif., before moving in 1989 to Scholls, where he was a real estate salesman, most recently for Re/Max Equity Group. He was serving on the board of directors of the Hillsboro American Legion. In 1972, he married Anne Dixon.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Mariya Stimson and Katie Yelvington; son, Jonathan; mother, Jacqueline Couture; father and stepmother, George and Dottie; brothers, Larry and Rick; sister, Janice Brethen; and two grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home.
