Gladys Marie Bennett

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in St. Agatha Catholic Church for Gladys Marie Bennett, who died Nov. 1 at age 70. Miss Bennett was born March 6, 1930, in Hollywood, Calif. She was raised in California and was a data-entry worker for the social services department for the state for more than 40 years until retiring in 1994, when she moved to Portland. She was a member of the church.

Survivors include her cousins.

Interment will be in Calvary cemetery in Whittier, Calif. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Wilhelm Funeral Home.

Frank Bowlby Jr.

Frank Bowlby Jr. died Oct. 27, 2000, of cancer at age 50. A service was held. Mr. Bowlby was born Aug. 30, 1950, in Hood River and moved to Portland in 1960. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1968, and attended the University of Oregon. He owned two service stations in Portland, was service manager for Olinger Travel Homes and was a sales director for Evergreen Technologies in Corvallis for the past four years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He married Janis Ball in 1970.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Lindsay Hayden; sons, Andrew and Aaron; mother, Evelyn; sisters, Susan Tremper, Anna Bowlby, Gail O'Donel and Karen Foster; and one grandchild.

Interment is in Idlewild cemetery in Hood River. The family suggests remembrances to the endowment fund for the Oregon State University wrestling team. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home.

Cecil Thomas Carroll

Cecil Thomas Carroll died Oct. 26, 2000, at age 95. There will be no service. Mr. Carroll was born Sept. 23, 1905, in Ritzville, Wash., and was raised in Vancouver, Wash. He graduated from Vancouver High School and attended Oregon Agricultural College. He moved to Portland in 1948, and worked for the Portland Public Works Bureau for 23 years, retiring as senior engineer in 1972. In 1960, he married M. Mae Jackson.

Survivors include his wife; and son, David.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Oaks Park Museum, foot of Southeast Spokane Street, Portland, OR 97202. Arrangements are by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Frank Donald Casselman

Frank Donald Casselman died Oct. 26, 2000, at age 97. No service will be held. Mr. Casselman was born March 2, 1903, in Douglas, Neb. He lived in Bairoil, Wyo., before moving in 1939 to Del Norte, Colo., where he farmed until retiring in 1976. He then lived in Ojai, Calif., and in 1989 moved to Gresham. In 1932, he married Helen Donnen; she died in 1980.

Survivors include his son, Charles B.; daughters, Ione F. Robinson and Janet L. Shaver; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements were by Portland Funeral Alternatives.

Dorothy E. Collins

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church for Dorothy E. Collins, who died Nov. 2 at age 68. Mrs. Collins was born Aug. 15, 1932, in Jerome, Iowa. Her maiden name was Dooley. She moved to east Multnomah County in 1939 and graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School in 1950. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of the church.

Survivors include her brothers, David Dooley and Thomas Dooley; and one grandchild. Her son, Lee F., died in 1987. Her daughter, Elizabeth, died in infancy in 1960. Her daughter, Dorothene Collins, died in 1988.

Private interment will be in Douglass Pioneer cemetery in Troutdale. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Alternatives.

Katrine F. Day

Katrine F. "Katy" Day died Oct. 22, 2000, at age 82. No service will be held. Mrs. Day was born April 21, 1918, in Shoshone, Idaho. Her maiden name was Brennan. She moved to Portland in the late 1950s. She was an employment specialist for the Oregon Employment Division, retiring in 1982. She then moved to Cloverdale. She married Joseph Day; he died in 1969.

Survivors include her caregiver, Pat Griffith.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the North Lincoln Hospice, 3100 N.E. 28th St., Lincoln City, OR 97367. Arrangements are by Pacific View Memorial Chapel Gardens and Crematorium.

Sam Norman Freberg

Sam Norman Freberg died Oct. 25, 2000, at age 83. No service will be held. Mr. Freberg was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Seattle. He moved to Portland in 1961 and worked for the Portland School District until retiring in 1986. He married Ruth B. Batchelor in 1962.

Survivors include his wife; brother, William V. Owen; and nephews and nieces.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Arrangements are by Oregon Cremation Co.

Virginia E. Gover

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Gable & Parkrose Funeral Chapel for Virginia E. Gover, who died Nov. 1 at age 76. Mrs. Gover was born June 24, 1924, in Silverton. Her maiden name was Sheirman. She was raised in Silverton and graduated from high school there. She moved to Portland in 1958 and was a clerical worker for several city departments, including the Water Bureau and the Permit Application Center, until retiring in 1989. In 1944, she married William T. Gover; they divorced.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Bartel.

Interment will be in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a charity of choice.

Donald B. Grimes

Donald B. Grimes died Oct. 18, 2000, of complications from a stroke at age 70. Mr. Grimes was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Seattle, where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After military service, he was a manager for several Tradewell Stores in Seattle until moving to Beaverton in 1975. He worked for Prairie Market for 10 years, retiring in 1985 as Oregon division manager. In 1960, he married Dorothy Johnston.

Survivors include his wife; son, Mark D.; and three grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Providence St. Vincent Hospice. Arrangements were by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.

Hazel Iola Hanley

A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in the Hazel Dell Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vancouver, Wash., for Hazel Iola Hanley, who died Nov. 1 at age 92. Mrs. Hanley was born Jan. 27, 1908, in Ionia, Iowa. Her maiden name was Grove. She was raised in Iowa, where she attended a teacher's college. She was an elementary school teacher for about eight years in the school her grandfather built in New Hampton, Iowa. She moved to Los Angeles and was a homemaker, and then a bookkeeper for more than 10 years. She moved to Vancouver in 1972, and was a co-owner with her husband and son of a Coast-to-Coast Hardware store for 10 years. She was a member of the church. In 1928, she married Guy Maxwell Hanley; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, Harold W.; daughter, Joyce J. Holland; brother, Warren Grove; six grandchildren; one foster grandchild; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery in Vancouver. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home.

May Victoria Jones

A funeral will be at noon Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes for May Victoria Jones, who died Nov. 3 at age 94. Mrs. Jones was born May 1, 1906, in San Francisco. Her maiden name was Peterson. She moved to Portland as a child. She was a homemaker who often wrote to the editor of the Oregon Journal as the "little old lady in tennis shoes." She was also a writer and poet who had been published in various publications. In 1943, she married Rotchley Clare Jones; he died in 1962.

Survivors include her sons, Art Pacholke, John Jones, Aaron Jones and Dan Jones; daughters, Judy Jones and Jeannie Stephens; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Her son, Franklin Pacholke, died earlier.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Girls and Boys Town, Boys Town, NE 68010.

Vincent Kuzmanich

Vincent Kuzmanich, the father-in-law of former U.S. Sen. Mark Hatfield of Oregon, died Nov. 1, 2000, at age 94. A service was held. Mr. Kuzmanich was born Sept. 14, 1906, in Grohote, Croatia. He immigrated in 1921 to the United States through Ellis Island, N.Y., then settled in Portland. He became a U.S. citizen in 1937. He had been a longshoreman for about 40 years and owned taverns at various times in Portland. He also was a commercial fisherman for about 10 years during the summer in Alaska. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. In 1928, he married Josephine Leovich.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Antoinette Hatfield; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Vincent Fund for needy children in care of First Baptist Church, 909 S.W. 11th Ave., Portland, OR 97205. Arrangements were by Riverview Abbey Funeral Home.

Martha J. Luoto

A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville for Martha J. Luoto, who died Nov. 4 at age 92. Mrs. Luoto was born March 26, 1908, in Quincy, where she was raised. Her maiden name was Tolva. She was a homemaker who lived in Woodson and then Westport until moving to Carlton in 1989. She was past president and lifetime member of the Rebekah Lodge in Westport. In 1925, she married Jack Luoto; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, Robert; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Interment will be in Westport cemetery in Westport. The family suggests remembrances to McMinnville Covenant Church, 2155 West 2nd St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
