Garnett E. Porter

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis for Garnett E. Porter, who died Jan. 20 at age 91. Mrs. Porter was born July 19, 1909, in Aumsville. Her maiden name was Mack. From 1938 to 1942, she lived in Alsea, where she and her husband owned Alsea General Mercantile. From 1942 until 1945, they were partners in Atwood & Porter, another general store, in Corvallis. In 1945, they moved to Albany, where she was a homemaker until 1952, when they moved to Junction City and co-owned Richmaid Ice Cream until retiring in 1960, when they moved to Eugene. In 1976, she returned to Corvallis and in 1986 moved to Portland. She was a member of Methodist churches until 1955 and then was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1931, she married Hugh Porter; he died in 1980.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Wilson; brothers, Myron Mack and Chester Mack; sister, Pearl Montgomery; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Monroe cemetery in Monroe. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Charlotte S. Smith~ A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Park Hill cemetery in Vancouver, Wash., for Charlotte S. Smith, who died Jan. 23 of a heart attack at age 74. Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Providence, R.I. Her maiden name was Shephard. She moved to Portland in 1947, and was a homemaker and was serving on the board of directors of the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. She was a past board member of Skyline Little League. In 1944, she married Melvin Smith.

Survivors include her husband; son, Leonard; sisters, Zelda Tatel, Esther Rosenbloom and Frances Wolensky; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances to the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. Arrangements are by Aftercare Burial & Cremation Service.

Frank Phillip Walker

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Sunset Presbyterian Church for Frank Phillip Walker, who died Jan. 18 of a heart attack at age 65. Mr. Walker was born Aug. 15, 1935, in Tacoma. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He moved to Portland about 1965, and owned Frank's Quality Siding for about 15 years before retiring in July. In 1984, he married Glenda Forgey.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Nicole and Daydra; sons, Lewis, Alan and Paul; brother, David; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Westside Cremation.

Faith C. Herpers

Faith C. Herpers died Jan. 26, 2001, at age 85. A private service will be held. Mrs. Herpers was born May 18, 1915, in Chicago. Her maiden name was Gort. She graduated from Sweetbriar College in Virginia and lived most of her life in Seattle before moving to Portland in 1995. She was a homemaker. In 1936, she married Ferdinand Herpers; he died in 1982.

Survivors include her sons, Jeff and John; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Legacy Visiting Nurse Association Hospice. Arrangements are by Portland Funeral Alternatives.

Deborah Jean Mersereau

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Portland Memorial Funeral Home for Deborah Jean Mersereau, who died Jan. 22 of a heart attack at age 47. Mrs. Mersereau was born Sept. 13, 1953, in Portland, where she lived all her life. Her maiden name was Donnelly. She graduated from Wilson High School and from the University of Oregon. She was a classified advertising saleswoman for The Oregonian for 24 years before her retirement in 2000. In 1976, she married Jules Mersereau.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Libbi; son, Charlie; and sister, Suzanne Kitchings.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Alano Club.

Bessie Anne Newton

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Beaverton Christian Church for Bessie Anne Newton, who died Jan. 25 at age 90. Mrs. Newton was born April 16, 1910, in Aspen, Colo. Her maiden name was Reichert. She graduated from Colorado State Teachers College and received a teaching degree from Oregon College of Education. A first-grade teacher, she taught for eight years in Aspen before moving to Portland in the mid 1940s. She taught in Portland public schools for 32 years, first in Boise Elementary and 23 years in Multnomah Elementary. She retired in 1976. She was a member of the church and taught Sunday school. In 1945, she married Charles Henry Newton; he died in 1987.

Survivors include her nieces, Patricia Harrop and Mary Ann Poling; nephew, Stanford McDowell; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her stepdaughter, Nancy Zim, died about 1995.

Interment is in Skyline Memorial Gardens. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Skyline Funeral Home.

Kate Elizabeth Nibler

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church for Kate Elizabeth Nibler, who died Jan. 25 at age 88. Recitation of the rosary will precede the Mass at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Nibler was born Oct. 30, 1912, in Kemmerer, Wyo. Her maiden name was Niemi. She moved to Portland in 1934 and was a homemaker and a member of the church. In 1937, she married Norvin Nibler; he died in 1995.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Avritt and Karen Perea; sons, Jerry and Paul; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, P.O. Box 96173, Washington, DC 20077. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Everett J. Phillips

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Hennessey Goetsch & McGee for Everett J. Phillips, who died Jan. 28 at age 88. Mr. Phillips was born July 4, 1912, in Woodburn and was raised in areas throughout the Northwest. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1931 and later attended a business college. He worked for Crown Zellerbach for 44 years, retiring as a district systems and materials manager in 1975. In 1934, he married Ina Roberts.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Byron and Gary; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Diabetes Association.

Ernest Joseph Schraner

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Christ the King Catholic Church in Milwaukie for Ernest Joseph Schraner, who died Jan. 28 of a stroke at age 74. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the church. Mr. Schraner was born Aug. 16, 1926, in the Bronx, New York City. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. He moved in 1950 to Portland. A cabinetmaker, he owned E.J. Schraner Cabinet Shop in Milwaukie from 1956 until retiring in 1994. He was a member of the church and was a past president of its parents' club. He also had been president of Jodelklub Edelwyss and Helvetia-Alpengluehn. In 1951, he married Mary Ellen Nydegger.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Heidi Perry, Suzann Perry and Trudi Schraner; sons, John, Ernest Jr., Joseph and Peter; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the La Salle High School Endowment Fund. Arrangements are by Hennessey Goetsch & McGee.

Wilma Y. Tait

A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Wilma Y. Tait, who died Jan. 27 of a brain tumor at age 62. Mrs. Tait was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Perth, Scotland. Her maiden name was Smith. She immigrated in 1964 to the United States and settled in Portland, where she worked in the business office of Emanuel Hospital for about seven years. She was a homemaker. In 1963, she married John A. Tait.

Survivors include her husband; son, Michael J.; sisters, Agnes Kettles, Audrey Little and Norma Gardiner; brother, Alexander Smith; and one grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Ostomy Association, P.O. Box 25629, Portland, OR 97298.

Marcie Lee Washington

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church for Marcie Lee Washington, who died Jan. 26, apparently of congestive heart failure, at age 75. Miss Washington was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Branchville, Texas. She lived in Hobbes, N.M., until 1965, when she moved to Kansas City, Mo. She was a private care certified nursing assistant, retiring in about 1996. She moved to Portland in October and was a member of the church.

Survivors include her son, Arthur L. Bryant; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to Northeast Portland Senior Citizens through the Urban League of Portland. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Timothy Boyd Willson

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Home in Oregon City for Timothy Boyd "Tim" Willson, who died Jan. 28 of cancer at age 60. Mr. Willson was born April 9, 1940, in Oregon City. After graduating from West Linn High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a lineman for GTE Northwest for 30 years, retiring in 1993, then was self-employed as a truck driver until last year. In 1959, he married LaVaughn "Bonnie" Nelson.

Survivors include his wife; son, Kerry T.; daughter, Kristina S.; sister, Kareen D. Bayless; and three grandchildren.

Interment is in Mountain View cemetery in Oregon City. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.

Holly Lynne Wilson

A memorial gathering will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in the home of Phil and Mary Helen Bolton for Holly Lynne Wilson, who died Jan. 28 in an automobile accident in Vancouver, Wash., at age 38. Miss Wilson was born March 10, 1962, in Portland, where she lived all her life. She attended Milwaukie High School and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, ChadlerL. Dixon and Brandon J. Dixon; mother, Sharon Sprague; sister, Shelly; and brother, Jeffrey.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.

Gary A. Carsner

Gary A. Carsner died Jan. 21, 2001, of cancer at age 62. No service will be held. Mr. Carsner was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Coos Bay. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 23 years. In 1970, he moved to Portland and was a school bus driver for Laidlaw for about five years and then was a care provider for mentally disabled adults in their homes until about 1999. In 1985, he married Christine M. Simmons; she died in 1999.

Survivors include his sons, Wayne and Brian; daughter, Marcie Woodwood; brothers, Lyle and Gail; and six grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Oregon Cremation Co.
