Henry A. Skiles

A service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Henry A. Skiles, who died April 3 at age 64. Mr. Skiles was born July 27, 1936, in Thebes, Ill., and moved to Portland in 1942. He graduated from Beaverton High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a baker for 23 years, retiring in 1979 and moving to Wilsonville.

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth Hazel; sister-in-law, Dorothy; and nieces and nephews.

Remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Home.

Marie Mullins Smerdel

A service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in Portland Memorial Mausoleum for Marie Mullins Smerdel, who died March 30 at age 87. Mrs. Smerdel was born Marie Sacomano on Aug. 2, 1913, in Grimaldi, Calabria, Italy. She immigrated to Portland in 1918 and graduated from Lincoln High School and from the University of Oregon. She taught in elementary schools and then in high schools in Grants Pass and Medford before moving to Lake Oswego, where she taught and directed the school choir until 1958. She then taught in Inglewood, Calif., until retiring in 1968. While in California, she earned two master's degrees from UCLA and was a travel agent after retiring. In 1995, she returned to Lake Oswego. In 1939, she married James A. Mullins; he died in 1963. She married Matthew Thomas Smerdel in 1968; he died in 1995.

Survivors include her son, James Mullins; stepsons, Jim and Tom; and four grandchildren.

Marcella I. Ketelhohm Snyder

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in the chapel in River View cemetery for Marcella I. Ketelhohm Snyder, who died April 2 at age 92. Mrs. Snyder was born Marcella Sullivan on Jan. 16, 1909, in Deer Lodge, Mont. A homemaker, she moved to Portland in 1930, then lived in Seal Rock for 20 years before moving to King City in 1988. She was a housemother at Oregon State University from 1967 to 1969. In 1930, she married Herbert Ketelhohm; he died in 1966. She married Ralph Snyder in 1973; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her son-in-law, Morris McElwee; sister, Helen Gilbert; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Beverly McElwee, died in 1986.

Remembrances to St. Clare Catholic Church. Arrangements by Riverview Abbey.

Audrey D. Talmadge

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in Hamilton-Mylan in Vancouver, Wash., for Audrey D. Talmadge, who died April 2 at age 88. Mrs. Talmadge was born Audrey D. Houtz on June 2, 1912, in Fillmore, Calif. She moved to Ridgefield, Wash., from Monterey Park, Calif., in 1980 and was a homemaker. In 1930, she married Adelbert C. Talmadge.

Survivors include her husband; son, Jack; sister, Elizabeth Niver; seven grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Interment in Northwood Park cemetery in Salmon Creek, Wash.

Florence T. Thiel

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in Canby Funeral Chapel for Florence T. Thiel of Woodburn, who died April 2 at age 74. Mrs. Thiel was born Florence T. Couch on June 9, 1926, in Spokane. She moved to Aurora in 1953, and to Woodburn in 1976. She was an inspector for Birds Eye in Woodburn for 38 years, retiring in the early 1980s. She was most excellent chief of Una Temple 26 of the Pythian Sisters. In 1950, she married Richard Thiel; he died in 1976.

Survivors include her daughters, Mariann Lovelady and Karen Nice; and stepdaughters, Peggy Peters, Barbara Pierce and Patsy Rector.

Samuel Vincent Torchia

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church for Samuel Vincent Torchia, who died April 2 at age 90. Mr. Torchia was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Tacoma and was raised in Portland. He was a driver and produce manager for several companies, including the family business Sheridan Fruit, in which he was still active. In 1935, he married Helen Parise; she died in 1999.

Survivors include his son, Vincent; daughters, Rose Parise-Howe and Mary Jean Parise; sister, Lorraine Dardano; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Remembrances to Oregon Health Sciences Foundation. Arrangements by Portland Memorial.

James D. Upchurch

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in Brookwood Baptist Church in Hillsboro for James D. "Jim" Upchurch, who died April 1 at age 66. Mr. Upchurch was born Dec. 14, 1934, in Water Valley, Miss., and was raised in Taylor, Miss. He served in the U.S. Army and then lived in several states, where he was a freight transport manager for several companies, retiring from USF Holland in 1997, when he moved to Roy. In 1970, he married Ruth M. Myers.

Survivors include his wife; stepsons, Dean Cox, Henry E. Cox and Curtis R. Cox; brother, William C.; sister, Gloria Harmon; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove. Remembrances to the building fund of his church. Arrangements by Fuiten Rose & Hoyt.

Harry William 'Bill' Volskey

Harry William "Bill" Volskey died Feb. 24, 2001, at age 78. Mr. Volskey was born Feb. 25, 1922, in McBride, British Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, mostly in the South Pacific. He moved to Halfway in 1966 and worked on the Hells Canyon dam. In 1970, he moved to Troutdale. He married Freddie Leavitt in 1948.

Survivors include his wife; brother, Dean; daughters, LaVonne Holland, Susi Chadwick and Ronna Gran; son, Randi; stepsons, Michael Leavitt and John Leavitt; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Interment in Greenacres cemetery in Ferndale, Wash. Remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association Oregon Trail Chapter.

Betty Jean Wilson

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in the chapel in River View cemetery for Betty Jean Wilson, who died March 31 at age 74. Mrs. Wilson was born Betty Jean McCool on April 5, 1926, in Wichita, Kan. She moved to Lake Oswego from Lafayette, Calif., in 1967 and was a homemaker. In 1944, she married Bernard Wilson.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Melody Miller; sons, Brian and Bradley; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Eva M. Batchelor

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Rose City cemetery for Eva M. Batchelor, who died March 29 at age 72. Mrs. Batchelor as born July 13, 1928, in Grangeville, Idaho. Her maiden name was Wymer. She moved to Milwaukie in 1941, and graduated from Milwaukie High School. She sold Julie Lee, Celebrity and Act II jewelry, retiring in 1994. In 1979, she married Wesley L. Batchelor Sr.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Dianna Batchelor and Marie White; sons, Edward Vance, David Batchelor and Wesley L. Batchelor Jr.; mother, Mary E. Wymer; sisters, Loretta Malta and Gladyce Peebles; brothers, O.D. Wymer and Terry Wymer; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Earl Betzer

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton for Lawrence Earl Betzer, who died March 29 at age 87. Mr. Betzer was born Dec. 15, 1913, in Weiser,Idaho. He moved to Orenco in 1942, and was a truck driver for Birds Eye for 32 years, retiring in 1976. He was a past president and board member of Hillsboro AARP. In 1940, he married Adaline Ballard.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Janice McLain; sons, David and Frank; brother, Frank; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter Joann Thompson died in 1993, and his daughter Barbara Betzer in 1966.

Interment in Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro. Remembrances to the church building fund. Arrangements by Pegg, Paxson & Springer.

Ruth Hilda Borland

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Mountain View cemetery in Oregon City for Ruth Hilda Borland, who died March 30 at age 93. Mrs. Borland was born June 15, 1907, in Oregon City. Her maiden name was Elligsen. She graduated from West Linn High School and was a clerk for the Lake Oswego Post Office for about 15 years, retiring in 1974. She married Burns Britton in 1927; he died in 1974. In 1984, she married Arthur Borland; he died in 1995.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Remembrances to Oregon City Meals-on-Wheels. Arrangements by Holman Hankins Bowker & Waud.

Margaret J. Brewer

Margaret J. Brewer died March 24, 2001, at age 78. Mrs. Brewer was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Portland. Her maiden name was Bailey. She was a volunteer secretary at Cedar Mills Community Church, of which she was a member, and then a librarian at Pacific University until retiring in 1986. In 1943, she married Richard Brewer; they were divorced.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Davies; sons Michael, John and David; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
