Alida H. 'Riek' van der Bent

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in East Vancouver United Methodist Church in Vancouver, Wash., for Alida H. "Riek" van der Bent, who died March 29 at age 84. Mrs. van der Bent was born Dec. 17, 1916, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her maiden name was Jansen. She immigrated to Vancouver in 1956, and was a homemaker. In 1948, she married Leendert van der Bent; he died in 1981.

Survivors include her daughters, Leny Walter and Marieke Kemper; brother, Rink Jansen; and two grandchildren.

Interment in Park Hill cemetery in Vancouver. Remembrances to her church. Arrangements by Hamilton-Mylan.

Robert F. Wells

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Robert F. Wells, who died March 27 at age 82. Mr. Wells was born April 7, 1918, in Morrison,Okla. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He moved to Portland in 1953, and was a manager for Remington Land for 10 years, bookkeeper and officer manager for Dupar Dynamics for eight years, and then office manager for Walton Hydraulics for 10 years, retiring in 1981. In 1946, he married Aralene E. Bridge; she died in 1998.

Survivors include his son, Terry; daughter, Sharon Fraley; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the National Kidney Foundation.

Robert Vernon Williams

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for Robert Vernon Williams, who died March 29 at age 71. Mr. Williams was born March 7, 1930, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and moved to Gresham in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a painter for Hyster for 43 years, retiring in 1995. In 1950, he married Maxine Ruth; she died in 1974.

Survivors include his son, David B.; daughter, Ardith M.; sisters, Lois Hoover and Dita Hammock; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society.

Elma 'Pete' Avants

A funeral will be at noon Monday, April 2, 2001, in Full Gospel Community Church in Portland for Elma "Pete" Avants, who died March 28 at age 75. Mr. Avants was born March 7, 1926, in Cove, Ark. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He moved from Southern California in 1963 to Portland and was a manager for Burns Bros., retiring in 1973. In 1966, he married Frances Guajardo; she died in 1988. In 1992, he married Clover Stewart.

Survivors include his wife; son, Robert; step-son, Ray Turner; daughters, Ruby Spring and Michele Corrigan; step-daughters, Taffy Pense and Susie Singleton; sisters, Onia Renfroe and Lela Winchester; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Omega.

Myrna Johns Blanchard

Myrna Johns Blanchard died Feb. 27, 2001, at age 65. Mrs. Blanchard was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Rewey, Wis., and moved to Portland in 1942. Her maiden name was Johns. She graduated from Washington High School in 1953, and was a secretary for Multnomah County in the zoning and planning departments for 25 years, retiring in 1997. In 1954, she married James Blanchard; they later divorced.

Survivors include her sons, Jeff and Daniel; daughters, Karyn Butler and Susan Schnepp; sister, Joan Weddle; and nine grandchildren.

Service held. Interment in Douglass Pioneer cemetery in Troutdale. Remembrances to the church. Arrangements by Gable & Parkrose.

Kimie Blegen-Kurata

Kimie Blegen-Kurata died March 1, 2001, at age 55. Mrs. Blegen-Kurata was born March 15, 1945, in Sasebo, Japan. Her maiden name was Takeuchi. She immigrated to Fort Pierre, S.D., in 1974, and moved to Portland in 1982. She was a laundry worker for Portland Hospital Service for the past 12 years. In 1992, she married Tsuneo Kurata.

Survivors include her husband; son, James Blegen; daughters, Kristina Clark and Patricia Trejo; sister, Sumiko Takeuchi; brothers, Ichiro Takeuchi and Ejiro Takeuchi; and two grandchildren.

Service held. Arrangements by Bateman-Carroll.

Ruth Emma Clark

A graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Park for Ruth Emma Clark, who died March 28 at age 82. Mrs. Clark was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Wichita, Kan. Her maiden name was Alltop. She moved to Portland in 1947 and owned an upholstery shop for 15 years, retiring for health reasons in 1969. Her husband, Claud Clark, died in 1965.

Survivors include her daughter, Marie Borgman; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Carolyn Dash

Carolyn Dash of Gladstone died March 24, 2001, at age 79. Mrs. Dash was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Beaverton. Her maiden name was Grammer. She was an office worker, retiring in 1987. In 1949, she married Norman A. Dash ; he died in 1985.

Survivors include her sons, Gary and Norman; sister, Dorothy Grammer; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No service. Arrangements by Crown Burial & Cremation.

Irene Anna Decker

Irene Anna Decker died March 9, 2001, at age 83. Mrs. Decker was born Dec. 10, 1917, in Hobart, N.Y. Her maiden name was Fox. She moved to Portland in 1954 and was a baker for Ruth Ashbrook Bakery from 1956 until her retirement in 1980. In 1936, she married John H. Decker; he died in 1999.

Survivors include her son, James W.; daughters, Jean A. Heflin, Barbara I. Gray, Susan L. Cyders, Doreen M. Watson and Teresa K. Decker; sisters, Margaret Fox, Rose Erickson, Louise Grant and Mary All; brother, Joseph Fox; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Service pending. Interment in Grant cemetery in Hobart, N.Y. Arrangements by Aftercare.

Martha May Drew

Martha May Drew died March 16, 2001, at age 51. Mrs. Drew was born July 4, 1949, in Portland and graduated from Sandy High School. She was a member of the Baha'i faith. She married Rod Cyr in 1973; they divorced in 1981.

Survivors include her mother, Marie Drew; sisters, Beverley Kindley, Nancy Drew and Susan Drew; and fiance, Thomas Gould.

Service held. Interment in Sandy Ridge cemetery in Boring. Arrangements by Sandy Funeral Home.

Elizabeth 'Betty Lou' Ellis

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard for Elizabeth "Betty Lou" Ellis, who died March 28 at age 83. Mrs. Ellis was born Sept. 29, 1917, in Okanogan, Wash. Her maiden name was Maus. She was a homemaker. She moved to King City in 1994. In 1940, she married William G. Ellis; he died in 2000.

Survivors include her sons, John and Robert; daughters, Martha Day, Anne Griffin and Barbara Tryfos; brother, Robert Maus; sisters, Virginia Sorley and Roberta Horton; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Frieda R. Gooch

Frieda R. Gooch died March 24, 2001, at age 89. Mrs. Gooch was born June 3, 1911, in Rainier. Her maiden name was Russell. She lived in Salem most of her life and was a homemaker. She moved to Portland two years ago. In 1933, she married Earl Gooch; he died in 1991.

Survivors include her daughter, Twyla Cloyd; sister, Helen Burlingham; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

No service. Remembrances to the Oregon Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center in care of Oregon Health Sciences University. Arrangements by Omega Funeral & Cremation.

Alan 'Punch' Green

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral for Alan "Punch" Green, who died March 23 at age 75. Mr. Green was born May 1, 1925, in Portland. He graduated from Lincoln High School, where he was student body president. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific and graduated in 1949 from Stanford University.

He was an Oregon Republican who served as ambassador to Romania during the administration of former President Bush and had chaired the campaign of former Oregon Gov. Tom McCall and led the Oregon campaign committees of Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bush. He was named Oregon Republican of the Year in 1988. He married Joan Irwin in 1949.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Carter Peterson, Kelsey Grout and Ladd Mengel; and eight grandchildren.

Interment in Riverview cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society. Arrangements by Riverview Abbey.
