Virgene Grimes

Virgene Grimes died Feb. 27, 2001, at age 87. Miss Grimes was born May 12, 1913, in Bend. She lived in Portland for many years. She worked for the Farm Security Administration, War Food Administration and as a home economist for the Northwest Bell Telephone Co., retiring in 1968. She was a member of Central Bible Church.

Survivors include her brothers, Ralph and David; and sister, Helen Weidner.

Service held. Remembrances to her church. Arrangements by Lincoln Memorial Park.

Mildred Georgia Hardy

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Beaver Creek cemetery for Mildred Georgia Hardy, who died March 29 at age 102. Mrs. Hardy was born Nov. 19, 1898, in Hennessey, Okla. Her maiden name was McLaren. She moved to Oregon City in 1951. She was a homemaker and had been a berry farmer for a few years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Carus Community United Methodist Church. In 1917, she married Franklin Hardy; he died in 1956.

Survivors include her son, Robert Hardy; daughters, Leta Edmondson and Clara Wilson; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Interment in Beaver Creek cemetery. Remembrances to her church. Arrangements by Hillside Chapel.

John Michael Helfrich

John Michael Helfrich died March 27, 2001, at age 87. Mr. Helfrich was born April 15, 1913, in Portland. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Pacific Northwest Bell, retiring in the early 1980s. He moved to the Coos Bay area in 1992. He married L. Marguerite Helfrich; she died in 1999.

Survivors include his sons, Mike and Pat; sister, Dorothy Flaten; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

No service. Remembrances to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Arrangements by Coos Bay Chapel.

Raymond Eugene Hunsaker

Raymond "Ray" Eugene Hunsaker died March 16, 2001 at age 54. Mr. Hunsaker was born Dec. 6, 1946, in Portland. He graduated from Madison High School. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army. He was an engineer and sales representative with LaValley Industrial Plastics in Vancouver, Wash., for 18 years and had worked at Vee Enterprises in Pasadena, Texas, since 2000. In 1984, he married Rosemary Cross.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Lisa Hunsaker, Tara Flint and Sabrina Cross; son, Michael Cross; and six grandchildren.

Private service. Interment pending in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Eastgate in Garland, Texas.

Lewis G. Jurgens

A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for Lewis G. Jurgens, who died March 29 at age 65. Mr. Jurgens was born March 4, 1936, in Salem, and grew up in Vancouver, Wash. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He owned a foundry in Vancouver for about 13 years, retiring in 1999. In 1955, he married Shirley Anderson.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Teresa Mings and Lisa Cartwright; brother, Douglas; sisters, Darlene Teters and Sandra Schmaltz; and five grandchildren.

Remembrances to American Heart Association.

Darrel R. Kelly

Darrel R. Kelly died March 22, 2001, at age 92. Mr. Kelly was born Feb. 22, 1909, in Kingman, Kan. He was raised in Cunningham, Kan., and moved to Montana before settling in Lake Oswego. He worked for the Beaverton School District as a bus driver.

His wife, Lorraine, died in 1995. There are no known survivors.

No service. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Home.

Versie L. King

A funeral will be at noon Monday, April 2, 2001, in Church of the Living God for Versie L. King, who died March 25 at age 76. Mrs. King was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Bonita, La. Her maiden name was Watt. She was a nursing assistant in family homes. She moved to Portland in the early 1990s from Oakland, Calif. In 1970, she married Bishop Daniel R. King; he died in 1978.

Survivors include her son, Chappell Ford; daughters, Jeanette Williams and Archinina King; and two grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Warren Llewellyn Moore

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Oak Grove Church in Milwaukie for Warren Llewellyn Moore, who died March 26 at age 76. Mr. Moore was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Jennings Lodge. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and played tuba in a Navy band. He was a Portland police officer, then drove trucks for Merchants Riverview Delivery, retiring in 1971. In 1950, he married Evelyn Newcomb.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Dale G. and Mark W.; daughters, Carole M. Cole and Janice M. Moore; brother, Earl C.; and four grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the church's food bank.

Mickey 'Shawn' Nelson

Mickey "Shawn" Nelson died March 28, 2001, of cancer at age 36. Mrs. Nelson was born June 14, 1964, in Whittier, Calif., and grew up in Portland. Her maiden name was Tynan. She was a kitchen assistant at Mt. Scott Park Center for Learning for five years. In 1986, she married Douglas D. Nelson.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Timothy M. and Douglas J.; daughter, Valerie B.; brothers, Edward D. Tynan, James D. Tynan, Ted T. Tynan and Kevin L. Sanders; sisters, Kelly C. Andres, Kerry S. Phelan, Kathy M. Warnock and Tracey Babcock; and three grandchildren.

Service held. Interment in Redland cemetery. Remembrances to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Family Memorial.

Ancy A. Palmer

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Presentation High School in San Jose, Calif., for Ancy A. Palmer, who died March 1 at age 92. Mrs. Palmer was born July 14, 1908, in Stella, Wash. Her maiden name was Carlson. She moved to Portland after high school and attended Behnke Walker Business College. She and her husband owned Palmer's Appliance and TV from 1946 until retiring in 1971. She moved to San Jose in 1992. In 1935, she married Deo D. Palmer; he died in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Joel; daughter, Susan Giannini; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to the endowment fund of Presentation High School in San Jose. Arrangements by the Neptune Society in San Jose.

Eleanor Clifford Peirce

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in the First Unitarian Church in Portland for Eleanor Clifford Peirce, who died March 26 at age 101. Mrs. Peirce was born Jan. 6, 1900, in Bangor, Maine. Her maiden name was Clifford. As a young woman, she taught school in an island lighthouse off the coast of Maine, then was a homemaker. She moved to Portland in 1949. In 1923, she married Hayward Peirce; he died in 1977.

Survivors include her son, Robert H.; daughter, Mary Taylor Peirce; brother, Milton "Henry" Clifford; and sister, Beatrice C. Stoddard.

Interment in Oak Hill cemetery in Winterport, Maine. Remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Pearl Ann Sherlock

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel for Pearl Ann Sherlock, who died March 29 at age 89. Mrs. Sherlock was born Feb. 25, 1912, in Newberg. Her maiden name was Pawelski. She graduated from Newberg High School. She was a bank teller for thirty years, retiring in 1974. In 1947, she married Roy L. Sherlock; he died in 1988.

Survivors include her nieces, Barbara J. Bartruff, Dorothy Legg, Tola Young and Virginia Dvorak; and close friend, Val Andrews.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Vivian J. Standish

A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in St. Rose Catholic Church for Vivian J. Standish, who died March 26 at age 80. Mrs. Standish was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Portland. Her maiden name was Marasco. She graduated from Commerce High School. She was a homemaker. In 1945, she married Harold M. Standish; he died in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Ron; daughters, Judy Greig, Kathie Goffe and Sue Wenger; sisters, Kay Teresi, Francis Shumaker, Helen Knight, Edyth Graham and Esther Wacker; brother, Jim Marasco; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the Albertina Kerr Center. Arrangements by Peake Memorial Chapel.
