Linda L. Craven

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel for Linda L. Craven, who died Nov. 19 at age 53. Mrs. Craven was born Jan. 31, 1947, in Corvallis. She was raised in Independence. Her maiden name was Hearing. She moved to Portland in 1970 and earned an associate's degree from Mt. Hood Community College. She operated a private day care center out of her home for about 15 years. She later was assistant secretary of administration for Linfield College School of Nursing in Portland for about 14 years.

Survivors include her sons, David and Michael; daughter, Lisa; mother, Helen Hearing; sisters, Marilyn Davis and Joy Stalder; and two grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society.

Marie O. Durkin

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Eastminster Presbyterian Church for Marie O. Durkin, who died Nov. 19 at age 86. Mrs. Durkin was born Jan. 22, 1914, in Everett, Wash., where she was raised. Her maiden name was Okland. She moved to Washington, D.C., in the early 1930s and then to Tacoma, where she lived until moving to Portland about 1955. She was a homemaker and a member of the church. In 1963, she moved to Oklahoma City and then returned to Portland about 1968. In 1936, she married John Thomas; he died in June.

Survivors include her sons, Michael and John; sister, Joan Johns; and two grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements are by Mt. Scott Funeral Home.

Catherine Elsasser

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Living Savior Lutheran Church in Tualatin for Catherine Elsasser, who died Nov. 22 at age 86. Mrs. Elsasser was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Saskatchewan and moved to the Portland area as a child. Her maiden name was Schwab. She was a homemaker and from 1965 to 1971 owned Palisades Lanes bowling alley in Lake Oswego. She volunteered as a thrift-store clerk for the American Cancer Society and was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1932, she married George Elsasser; he died in 1976.

Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn K. Miles; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens. The family suggests remembrances to Tigard Loaves & Fishes. Arrangements are by Skyline Funeral Home.

Irene Benson Hufford

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Irene Benson Hufford, who died Nov. 21 at age 89. Mrs. Hufford was born Oct. 21, 1911, in Portland. Her maiden name was Benson. She graduated from Lincoln High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and she organized social events for Kaiser Permanente, for which her husband was an executive. She married Samson G. Hufford in 1940; he died in 1993.

Survivors include her daughters, Susan Poole and Nancy Hufford; and two grandchildren.

Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the William Temple House.

Mary Virginia Matheson

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in the Salvation Army Church in Pendleton for Mary Virginia Matheson, who died Nov. 19 at age 88. Mrs. Matheson was born March 7, 1912, in Enterprise. Her maiden name was Magee. She was a psychiatric aide for Eastern Oregon State Hospital in Pendleton for about 20 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of the church and volunteered in its thrift shop. She lived in Pendleton until moving to Beaverton three years ago. In 1961, she married Floyd Matheson; he died in 1974.

Survivors include her daughters, Sarah Gerde and Lawrene Bennett Williams; son, Samuel Taylor; stepson; Jerry Taylor; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her son Dennis Taylor died in 1962.

Interment will be in Enterprise cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Salvation Army. Arrangements are by Burns Mortuary in Pendleton.

Clarita D. Pantle

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in St. Mary's Cathedral for Clarita D. Pantle, who died Nov. 19 of cancer at age 67. Mrs. Pantle was born June 15, 1933, in Portland. Her maiden name was Gurtina. She provided day care in her home for the past 10 years. About 1970, she married Edward Pantle.

Survivors include her husband; sons, John E. Harris and Anthony F. Harris; daughters, Marla K. Youngren and Rhonda L. Evans; stepsons, Edward and Randy; sister, Roselee Stevenson; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her son Daniel P. Harris died in 1986.

Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. Arrangements are by Hennessey, Goetsch & McGee.

Harold L. 'Hal' Prothero

A funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash., for Harold L. "Hal" Prothero, who died Nov. 19 at age 83. Mr. Prothero was born Sept. 10, 1917, in Baraboo, Wis., and was raised in Vancouver. During World War II, he was an electrical-crew chief for Boeing in Seattle. He then opened Hal's Motor Clinic in Seattle, and in 1960 moved to Vancouver, where he continued the business until retiring in 1988. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vancouver. In 1943, he married Evelyn M. Shaff; she died in 1999.

Survivors include his daughters, Judy L. Hollmer, Diane L. Miller, Janice M. Dahl; brothers, Clarence and William; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Hospice Southwest.

Lillian F. Reese

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Wilhelm Funeral Home for Lillian F. Reese, who died Nov. 14 at age 75. Mrs. Reese was born April 4, 1925, in Butler, Pa. Her maiden name was Bays. A homemaker, she lived in Portland from 1955 to 1965, then in Cincinnati and Boston before returning in 1971 to Portland. In 1946, she married Donald H. Reese; he died in 1996.

Survivors include her daughters, Marylou Sherman and Barbara Robinson; sister, Mary Lou Reese; brother, Jim Ramsay; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Oregon Literacy. Arrangements are by Wilhelm Funeral Home.

Merline Francis Schlange

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Powellhurst Baptist Church for Merline Francis Schlange, who died Nov. 19 at age 99. Mr. Schlange was born April 10, 1901, in Minneapolis. He moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1935 and worked in the shipyards during World War II. He later owned a Helm's Bakery franchise in Long Beach for about 20 years. In 1966, he retired and moved to Portland, where he worked as a handyman and painter for several years. He was a past member of Memorial Baptist Church and Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. In 1924, he married Mildred B. Cooper; she died in 1955. He married Mildred C. Reid later that year.

Survivors include his wife; son, Merline D.; daughters, Judy Williams and Joyce Fowler; stepdaughter, Shirley Stauffer; stepson, David Reid; 21 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to Powellhurst Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel.

Leonard Anton Esch

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in St. Rose Catholic Church for Leonard Anton Esch, who died Nov. 18 at age 80. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, in Zeller Chapel of the Roses. Mr. Esch was born May 21, 1920, in St. Paul, Ore. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II in Europe. He was a sheet metal journeyman for Thompson Metal Fab Inc. in Portland, and later in Vancouver, Wash., for more than 20 years until retiring in 1983. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 16 and a member of the church. In 1946, he married Helene Blanche Watts; she died in 1997.

Survivors include his daughter, Theresa; stepdaughter, Beatrice Parham; stepson, Maurice Arthurs; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Heart Association.

Paul E. Fiess

Paul E. Fiess died Nov. 7, 2000, at age 81. A private memorial service was held. Mr. Fiess was born March 16, 1919, in Marlin, Wash. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces in Europe, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he received a bachelor's degree from Lewis & Clark College and master's degrees from Oregon State College and the University of Oregon. He taught science and mathematics at Grant High School for 28 years before retiring in 1979. He also taught yearlong assignments in Australia and Turkey on a Ford Foundation Teacher Exchange Scholarship. In 1945, he married Louise Borin; they were later divorced. He married Dorothy Wardell in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; stepdaughter, Dede Wardell Renne; sister, Elsie Garner; and four grandchildren. His daughter Victoria died in 1977.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a charity of choice. Arrangements are by Ross Hollywood Chapel.

Mary Galletly

Mary Galletly died Nov. 13, 2000, at age 69. No service will be held. Mrs. Galletly was born June 19, 1931, in New Kensington, Pa. She was raised in Ohio. Her maiden name was Contos. She lived in Florida and was a nurse's assistant in private home care until moving in 1990 to Portland, where she continued that work until retiring.

Survivors include her son, Robert; daughter, Judy MacWilliams; and three grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. Arrangements were by Family Memorial Mortuary.

Edward Holmstrom

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church for Edward Holmstrom, who died Nov. 22 at age 78. Mr. Holmstrom was born June 19, 1922, in Sweden. He immigrated to Portland as a child and moved to Astoria, where he attended high school. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific. He was a warehouseman for Griffith Rubber Mills and a ticket clerk for the Portland Meadows Racetrack and the Multnomah Kennel Club until retiring. He was a past officer with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. In 1952, he married Loretta Simone; she died in April.

Survivors include his daughters, Sandy Baumgartner and Stephanie Muro; brother, William; and two grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the World War II Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96766, Washington, D.C. 20090-6766. Arrangements are by Holman's Funeral Service.
