Ralph Norman Morris

A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, in Eastgate Bible Chapel in Portland for Ralph Norman Morris, who died June 1 at age 76. A private service will be today.

Edith Mae Parker

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel for Edith Mae Parker, who died June 1 at age 88. Mrs. Parker was born Edith Mae Kindred on March 24, 1913, in Rockwood, Tenn., and moved to Gresham as a teen-ager. She drove school buses for the Gresham School District and was a dietitian for Gresham General Hospital. She ran a nightclub, seafood store and day care center with her husband and operated Parker Tours for the past 30 years. She was president of the Gresham Grade School Parent-Teacher Association, president of Community Chest and chairwoman of the Multnomah County elections board. In 1935, she married Chester Robert Parker; he died in 1970.

Survivors include her sons, Robert and Daniel; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas E. Smith

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens for Thomas E. Smith, who died June 1 at age 67. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 2, 1933, in Valley City, N.D., and moved to Portland as child. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School and received a degree in business administration from the University of Oregon. He served in the U.S. Navy and later was a Green Beret in the Army Reserves Special Forces. In 1970, he moved to Scappoose and was a career consultant, retiring from Management & Training Corp. last year. In 1958, he married Delvera Sutfin.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Deborah Bottenberg and Christine Justus; sister, Catherine; and one grandchild. His daughter Kimberley died in 1976.

Interment in Murray Hill cemetery in Clatskanie. Remembrances to American Cancer Society.

Richard Kiyoshi Takashima

A funeral will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in the Oregon Buddhist Temple in Portland for Richard Kiyoshi Takashima, who died May 31 at age 59. Mr. Takashima was born Dec. 13, 1941, in Gresham. He graduated from Gresham High School and from the University of Portland. He moved in 1963 to Camarillo, Calif., and was a supervising mechanical engineer for the U.S. Navy for the past 38 years. In 1965, he married Judy Loomis.

Survivors include his wife; son, Rick; daughter, Kim Guzinski; mother, Ruth; brothers, James and Fred; and sister, Ruby Sumino.

Truong Thi Thach

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Portland Memorial Funeral Home for Truong Thi Thach, who died June 1 at age 90. Mrs. Thach was born Nov. 12, 1910, in Yen Bai, Vietnam. She immigrated to Portland 1975. In 1935, she married Luan Manh Luu; he died in 1953.

Survivors include her sons, Thuyet Luu, Dam Luu, Thoai Luu and Huan Luu; daughters, Kim Ngoc Luu and Chau Leatherman; and 15 grandchildren.

Dr. William Pitt Young

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Smullin Center at the Rogue Valley Medical Center campus in Medford for Dr. William Pitt Young, who died May 24 at age 61. Dr. Young was born Sept. 8, 1939, in Stockton, Calif. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and the University of California at San Francisco. He worked at the Ob/Gyn Health Center and the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford from 1973 to 1985. In 1975, he founded the Perinatal-Neonatal Lecture series. Until retiring in 1995, he was director of perinatal medicine at Emanuel Hospital and Health Center and associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology at OHSU. He was chief of obstetrics at Emanuel from 1990 to 1995. He married Kathleen A. Woodside in 1970.

Survivors include his wife; son, Bryan M.; daughter, Jennifer A.; mother, Juanita M.; and sister, Susan M. McGinty.

David Frank Basel

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2001, in Riverview Abbey Funeral Home for David Frank Basel, who died May 31 at age 57. Mr. Basel was born March 17, 1944, in Portland. He graduated from the University of Oregon and earned a master's degree from Boston University. He moved to Eugene in the 1970s and was a psychologist for the Department of Veterans Affairs there.

Survivors include his daughter, Michele Y. Meyers; brothers, Don, Bob and Steve; sisters, Mildred Springer and Julia Hoosons; and former wives, Carol Davis and Mary Alice Brown. His daughter Kimberlyn died in 1982.

Interment in Riverview Abbey Mausoleum.

William J. Bowman

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Canby for William "Bill" J. Bowman, who died May 31 at age 38. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, in the church. Mr. Bowman was born Oct. 13, 1962, in Salem. He was raised in Hubbard and graduated from North Marion High School. He was a truck driver for Eastern Oregon Fast Freight for about the last 18 years. He lived in Canby for the last 14 years. In 1985, he married Paula Fabis.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Hailey; parents, James and Marrietta; and brothers, Larry, Jeff, Bruce and Carl.

Harvey Taylor Cloe~ A memorial gathering will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in the community room of the Walnut Park Apartments in Portland for Harvey Taylor Cloe, who died May 28 at age 64. Mr. Cloe was born Oct. 20, 1936, in Portland. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a house painter and remodeler in the Portland area until retiring in 1999. In 1974, he married Barbara Tucker; she died in 1985.

Survivors include his daughter, Lisa A.; sisters, Alice Cox and Carol Emanuel; and brother, Delbert.

Matthew Coats

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Holman's Funeral Service for Matthew Coats, who died May 31 at age 89. Mr. Coats was born April 25, 1912, in Etowah County, Ala. He was a cotton and corn farmer in Alabama until retiring. He moved to Portland from Alabama one year ago. His wife, Ruth, died earlier.

Survivors include his daughter, Annie Bell Oliver; sister, Gertrude Stover; 11 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. His daughter Lillie May Page died in 1968.

Interment in Rose City cemetery.

Paul T. Deaton~ A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash., for Paul T. Deaton, who died May 31 at age 91. Mr. Deaton was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Greenville, Mo. He moved to Portland as a child and graduated from Jefferson High School. He was a railway messenger for REA Express for 37 years until retiring in 1974. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Portland. He moved to Vancouver in 1979. In 1933, he married Ruth Lucia; she died in 1995.

Survivors include his daughter, Lucia Halverson; son, Lawrence; sister, Dolly Palmer; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Evine Junette Ellison~ A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Grace Lutheran Church in Molalla for Evine Junette Ellison, who died June 1 at age 95. Mrs. Ellison was born Evine Junette Dolalie on Jan. 19, 1906, in Rushford, Minn. She moved to Portland in the 1930s. She was a homemaker and moved to Molalla in 1943. In 1937, she married Walter Ellison; he died in 1970.

Survivors include her daughter, Sheila McAllister; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Miller cemetery in Silverton. Arrangements by Molalla Funeral Chapel.

Myrtle James Ewing

Myrtle James Ewing died May 28, 2001, at age 81. Mrs. Ewing was born Myrtle James on Oct. 17, 1919, in San Francisco. She was a homemaker who moved to Portland from Monterey, Calif., in 1990. In 1947, she married Dr. William Edwards Jr.; they later divorced. In 1971, she married Thomas Ewing; he died in 1990.

Survivors include her son, Jim F. Edwards; daughters, Jean Edwards-Muir and Joan Edwards-Engdahl; and two grandchildren.

Service held. Interment in Sanger del Rey cemetery in Sanger, Calif. Remembrances to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Arrangements by Autumn.

H. Vivian 'Happy' Ford~ H. Vivian "Happy" Ford died May 24, 2001, at age 89. Mrs. Ford was born H. Vivian Hewitson on Nov. 1, 1911, in Seattle. She moved to Portland in 1935, and was a homemaker. During World War II, she helped with American Red Cross blood drives and received awards for her work. In 1938, she married Jack Ford; he died in 1989.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Blomberg; and sisters, Marion McLean and Peggy Clary.

No service. Remembrances to the Salvation Army. Arrangements by Neptune.
