Jennye R. Checkman

A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Gevurtz Chapel in Ahavai Shalom cemetery in Portland for Jennye R. Checkman, who died June 15 at age 86. Mrs. Checkman was born Jennye Resnick on July 29, 1914, in Burlington, Iowa. A homemaker, she moved to Portland in about 1977 and to Cupertino, Calif., in the 1990s. Her husband, David D. Checkman, died in 1990.

Survivors include her son, Harvey; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements by Holman's.

Laura Dahl Cheshire

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2001, in Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes for Laura Dahl Cheshire, who died June 14 at age 80. Mrs. Cheshire was born Laura Thibault on March 4, 1921, in South Pasadena, Calif., and moved to Missoula, Mont., as a child. She moved to Portland in the early 1940s. She was a trolley car driver for Rose City Transit for 17 years and later a pilot car driver. She retired as a massage therapist in 1985. In 1978, she married George Cheshire; he died in 1984.

Survivors include her nephews, Roy Henderson and Ray Henderson.

Interment in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society. Arrangements by Portland Memorial.

Frank L. DeGear

Frank L. DeGear died June 3, 2001, at age 73. Mr. DeGear was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Portland. He graduated from Benson High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for a fireplace screen company until his retirement in 1986. His wife, Marjorie, died in 1987.

Survivors include his brother, Kenneth A.; and nephews, Bill and Randy.

A memorial gathering will be in November. Arrangements by Wilhelm Funeral Home.

James W. Denney

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in North Bend for James W. Denney, who died June 5 at age 64. Mr. Denney was born March 2, 1937, in Cragford, Ala. A retired steam plant operator in North Bend, he moved to Portland in April. In 1959, he married Ollie Marchak.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Kathy Layfield; sons, Patrick and Doug; father and stepmother, John and Carolyn; brothers, Jack Denney and Steve Young; sisters, Rebecca Gentry, Nelda Goforth and Sue Neighbors; and five grandchildren.

Remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Autumn.

John Fitzgibbon Jr.

John Fitzgibbon Jr. died May 24, 2001, at age 78. Mr. Fitzgibbon was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Portland. He was raised and educated in Portland. He was a car dealer. In the late 1940s, he married Irene Francis.

Survivors include his wife; son, John III; daughters, Shelly McGregor, Shannon Fitzgibbon, Kerry Schroeder, Molly Fitzgibbon and Joy Hohulin; brother, Edward; sister, Mary Dimick; and six grandchildren.

Private service. Remembrances to Hospice Maui in Maui, Hawaii. Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary in Maui.

Rex Gedney

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2001, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Rex Gedney, who died June 16 at age 80. Mr. Gedney was born March 7, 1921, in Portland, and was raised there and in St. Helens before moving to Waldport as a teen-ager. He graduated from Waldport High School and from the University of Oregon. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces in the Pacific. He was a purchasing agent for Tektronix for more than 20 years, retiring in about 1982. In 1946, he married Fraynie Mary Watkins.

Survivors include his wife; son, Charles; daughters, Joleen Miller, Jennelle Winter and Tamara Witcosky; and 11 grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery in Smith River, Calif.

Herman Clifford Harvey

Herman Clifford Harvey died June 10, 2001, at age 64. Mr. Harvey was born Dec. 9, 1936, in Portland where he lived most of his life. He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957, and was a truck driver until a disability forced his retirement about five years ago.

Survivors include his sisters, Nellie Bruns and Cora Wilkinson; and companion, Virginia Read.

No service. Arrangements by Davies Cremation & Burial in Vancouver, Wash.

Thomas Leo Hazel

Thomas Leo Hazel died June 8, 2001, at age 75. Mr. Hazel was born September 1, 1925, in Portland. He served in the Navy during World War II and was an inserter and press operator for The Oregonian He then worked for the Tacoma News Tribune until retiring in 1986. He married Shirley Gifford in 1946.

He is survived by a wife; daughters, Debra Both-Chedester, Lori Graves, Michelle Standley; sons, Thomas Hazel Jr., Richard Hazel and Michael Hazel; grandmother, June Hazel; twenty-four grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. His daughter Joanne Rose Pease died previously.

Private service. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Tacoma Mausoleum.

Marcella Mary Joy

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Unity Church of Portland for Marcella Mary Joy, who died June 13 at age 83. Mrs. Joy was born Marcella Mary Petri on Aug. 11, 1917, in Chicago and moved to Portland as an infant. She graduated from Parkrose High School in 1936, then lived in Moro and West Linn before returning to Portland in 1966. A homemaker, she volunteered for several children's organizations and in 1993 was named outstanding volunteer for Mental Health Services West.

Survivors include her sons; Chester, Jason and David; daughter, Marcie Boroughs; sister, Theresa Allison; and grandchildren.

Remembrances to Salvation Army Greenhouse. Arrangements by Oregon Cremation.

Cynthia Marie Klump

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Hillside Chapel in Oregon City for Cynthia Marie Klump, who died June 14 at age 42. Ms. Klump was born Nov. 8, 1958, in Mount Shasta, Calif. She moved to Oregon City in about 1974. She was a homemaker and a cook for fairs and rodeos.

Survivors include her son, Michael Wittner; daughter, Annemarie Faulkner; mother, Anne M. Adams; brothers, Robert, Chris and Carl; sister, Dotty Novikoff; and two grandchildren.

Remembrances to American Cancer Society.

James Charles Kneer

James Charles Kneer died June 5, 2001, at age 48. Mr. Kneer was born Oct. 25, 1952, in Rochester, N.Y. He came to the Portland area five years ago from Las Vegas. He worked as director of corporate sales for Tri-County Moving in Hillsboro for the past six months. He previously worked for Northwest Moving & Storage in Portland. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In 1980, he married Jodi Tacchini.

Survivors include his wife; mother, Jayne; and brother, Chris.

No service. Remembrances to Legacy Visiting Nurses Association Hospice. Arrangements by Omega.

Margaret Jessie Miller

A graveside service will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Rose City cemetery for Margaret Jessie Miller, who died June 15 at age 94. Mrs. Miller was born Margaret Jessie Allen on Aug. 26, 1906, in Portland, where she lived all her life. She was a seamstress for Jantzen Knitting Mills for 20 years and then for Emanuel Hospital for about 30 years, retiring in 1971. In 1945, she married Everett J. Miller; he died in 1972.

Survivors include her second cousin, Garner Stewart.

Arrangements by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Louise Arlene Moll

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2001, in Portland Memorial Funeral Home for Louise Arlene Moll, who died June 15 at age 89. Mrs. Moll was born Louise Arlene Spencer on Feb. 10, 1912, in Audubon, Iowa. She moved to Portland in 1939 and was a clerk for Package Container for 10 years before moving to Gardena, Calif. in 1964. She worked for Xerox for 10 years, retiring in 1977. She returned to Portland in 1979. Her husband Edward Childs died earlier. In 1939, she married Frederick Moll; he died in 1989.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Brannan, Sandra Oliver and Patricia Henderson; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society.
