Barbara E. Murphy

A memorial gathering will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Forest Grove Library for Barbara E. Murphy, who died April 14 at age 64. Mrs. Murphy was born Barbara Donnison on April 12, 1937, in Turtleford, Saskatchewan. She received a teaching degree in British Columbia and taught third grade there. In 1957, she immigrated to Milwaukie and lived in several Oregon cities, moving to Forest Grove in 1991. She was a sales associate at Fred Meyer and volunteered at the Forest Grove Library and served on its commission. In 1957, she married J. Denis Murphy.

Survivors include her husband; son, Sean D.; daughters, Kellie Gilligan and Kim Frosaker; and three grandchildren.

Dale D. Nelson

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Summerplace Community Clubhouse for Dale D. Nelson, who died April 14 at age 77. Mr. Nelson was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Milltown, S.D. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific. He moved to Portland in 1947 and worked for Raven Creamery for 42 years, retiring as general manager in 1990. He was a trustee of Calvary Presbyterian Church. In 1945, he married Dorothy Asche.

Survivors include his wife; son, Harlan; daughters, Gloria Settlemier and Dedra Mulkey; brother, Leonard; sister, Eunice Bainbridge; and six grandchildren.

Interment in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. Remembrances to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Finley's.

Emery Philip Paranto

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsboro for Emery Philip Paranto, who died Feb. 22 at age 77. Mr. Paranto was born May 9, 1923, in Fargo, N.D. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He moved in 1956 to Hillsboro and was a self-employed home builder for about 24 years and later a maintenance man for Washington County for about six years, retiring in 1986. In 1982, he married Myrtle Lattimore Ness.

Survivors include his wife; son, Rodger; stepsons, Gary Ness and David Ness; brother, Walt; sisters, Louise Hessen, Violet Schroeder and Barbara McAvoy; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Bernadine Y. Pickrell

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Holman's Funeral Service for Bernadine Y. Pickrell, who died April 17 at age 88. Mrs. Pickrell was born Bernadine Y. Youngman on June 9, 1912, in Spokane. She moved to Portland as a child and graduated from Jefferson High School. She was a secretary for the city of Portland until retiring. She was a former longtime member of Patton-Central Methodist Church and Woodlawn Methodist Church. She married Mervin Pickrell; he died in 1957.

Survivors include her sons, Grant and Gale; sister, Florence Crain; and two grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery.

Elizabeth Swanson

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Cornwell Colonial Chapel for Elizabeth Swanson, who died April 17 at age 93. Mrs. Swanson was born Elizabeth Oster on Nov. 11, 1907, in Mount Angel. She was postmistress of the Monitor post office for 25 years, then was a clerk for the Woodburn post office for five years, retiring in 1969. She and her husband owned Swanson Truck Line. She moved to Salem in 1979 and to Keizer in 1995. In 1927, she married David Swanson; he died in 1970.

Survivors include six grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Darlene Leighty, died in 1992. Her son, David Jr., died in 1978.

Interment in Belle Passi cemetery in Woodburn. Remembrances to Willamette Falls Hospice.

George Odell Bennett

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Gresham for George Odell Bennett, who died March 2 at age 83. Mr. Bennett was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Gildford, Mont. He was raised in Montana and moved to Portland in 1936. He served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II. He returned to Portland and received mechanic's training. In 1952, he moved to Gresham. He was a maintenance worker for Marx Bakery and later worked for New System Laundry, until retiring as chief engineer in 1980. In 1941, he married Mary Blake.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Sharon Kerslake and Georgia A. Lyski; son, Wayne O.; sisters, Nona Wutkee, Velma Price and Gladys Ferguson; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances to the Northwest chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, 320 Andover Park East, Suite 270, Seattle, WA 98188. Arrangements are by Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel.

Marv Adams

Marv Adams died April 12, 2001, at age 79. Mr. Adams was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Mound City, Kan. He served as an anti-aircraft artillery officer in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He earned an undergraduate degree from Oregon State College in animal husbandry and a veterinary degree from Washington State University in 1951. He practiced veterinary medicine in Astoria and Arcata, Calif., from 1953 through 1974, then retired to Portland. In 1943, he married Claire Luethe.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Jennifer Saks; son, Gregory; and two grandchildren.

Service held. Remembrances to the Elsie Stuhr Senior Center meals-on-wheels program in Beaverton. Arrangements by Bronleewe-Bass.

Ralph N. Bunch Jr.

Ralph N. Bunch Jr. died April 8, 2001, at age 58. Mr. Bunch was born Nov. 21, 1942, in Annapolis, Md. He was a restaurant manager and lived in Vancouver, Wash., before moving to Salt Lake City and to Heppner in 1995. He married Bonnie Prink in 1997.

Survivors include his wife; son, Aaron N.; daughter Britt-Marie DeForeest; mother, Dorothy M.; brother, Charles B.; sisters, Cheryl Ann Rael and Patricia C. Poe; and one grandchild.

Private service. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Hamilton-Mylan in Vancouver.

Rose Jeanette Royer Dethloff

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Portland for Rose Jeanette Royer Dethloff, who died April 17 at age 88.

Mrs. Dethloff was born Rose Jeanette Royer on Aug. 16, 1912, in Portland. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy. She was a homemaker and a member of the church. In 1945, she married Edward Francis Dethloff; he died in 1989.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Tellert, Cathryn Lebsack, Patricia Rash and Frances Sciaraffo; son, James; brother, Charles Royer; sister, Catherine Fenger; and 13 grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Arrangements by Hennessey Goetsch & McGee.

Arnold W. 'Arnie' Erikson

Arnold W. "Arnie" Erikson died April 15, 2001, at age 82. Mr. Erikson was born March 4, 1919, in Portland. He graduated from Jefferson High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in North Africa. He was a machinist for Metro Steel Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986. He married Olive Wilson in 1966.

Survivors include wife; brother, Roy; and sisters, Anna Martinson and Mayo Rushing.

No service. Arrangements by St. Johns Funeral Home.

Thomas G. Howard

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, in Lincoln Willamette Funeral Directors for Thomas G. Howard, who died April 17 at age 87. Mr. Howard was born May 15, 1913, in Danville, Ark. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II in Europe and received the Legion of Merit. Afterward, he moved to Los Angeles and then to Grants Pass, where he was a millwright for Southern Oregon Plywood for more than 20 years, retiring in 1976. He moved to Portland in 1996. In 1945, he married Emily Hamlin; she died in 1994.

Survivors include his sons, Brian and Craig; daughter, Evelyn Syring; brother, Harold; sister, Dorothy Diltz; and five grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery.

Victor Ervin Johnston

Victor Ervin Johnston died April 18 at age 90. A service was held. Mr. Johnston was born Aug. 20, 1910, near Central City, Neb., where he was raised. He moved to Oregon in 1936 and settled in Newberg. He was self-employed in the construction industry and owned a cement plant in Beaverton. In 1931, he married Dorothy Stalker; she died in 1993.

Survivors include his daughters, Joanne Aebischer and Mary Holtan; brothers, Harold and Bill; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment in Newberg Friends cemetery. Remembrances to the cemetery fund at the church. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Home.

Violet Kellogg

Violet Kellogg died April 6, 2001, at age 91. Mrs. Kellogg was born Violet Ruth McCreight on Feb. 20, 1910, in Philadelphia. She moved to Portland in 1984. She worked in the motel management business until retiring in 1970. In 1948, she married Charles Kellogg; he died in 1978.

Survivors include her son, Wayne English; daughter, Donna; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
