Beatrice M. Schmoll

Beatrice M. Schmoll died April 13, 2001, at age 79. Mrs. Schmoll was born Beatrice M. Nelson on Nov. 11, 1921, in Oshkosh, Wis. She graduated from Klamath Falls Union High School in 1939 and lived in Portland from 1949 to 1997, when she moved to Battle Creek, Mich. She worked as an office accounting technician for Fred Meyer. She married Raymond A. Schmoll in 1941; he died in 1992.

Survivors include her sons, Jay W. and Lynn B.; sister, Doris Burkland; 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements by Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek.

Sandra Gail Simpson

Sandra Gail Simpson died March 7, 2001, at age 59. Mrs. Simpson was born Sandra Gail Bray on July 4, 1941, in San Bernardino, Calif. She was raised in San Diego. She became a ballroom dance teacher in the 1960s and moved to Hollywood, where she danced 10 years for the Bill Williams and Arthur Murray dance studios. She moved in 1975 to Portland and a year later to Gresham. She married Kenneth Simpson in 1970.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, April; son, Brian; mother, Arliss Hart; and three grandchildren.

Service held. Internment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Gresham. Arrangements by Bateman-Carroll.

Marvin Dean Smith

A memorial service will be at 11a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Marvin Dean Smith who died April 20 at age 69. Mr. Smith was born Dec. 11, 1931, in Miles City, Mont. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force and specialized in explosive ordinance demolition and disposal. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star. In 1978, after 27 years of service, he retired as a chief master sergeant and moved to Portland. In 1952, he married Bertha Ledbetter.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Earlynn Betzer, Deana Johnston and Sandra Dempster; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Virginia Jane Warner

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Park for Virginia Jane Warner, who died April 21 at age 83. Mrs. Warner was born Virginia Jane Rau on Feb. 1, 1918, in Portland. She graduated from Commerce High School. She was a secretary for the Disabled American Veterans for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986. In the 1940s, she married Lue E. Warner; they later divorced.

Survivors include her son, Paul; and two grandchildren.

Remembrances to Portland Providence Hospice. Arrangements by Rose City.

Marie Helen Barnes

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Ascension Catholic Church in Portland for Marie Helen Barnes, who died April 20 at age 84. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, in Gable & Parkrose Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Barnes was born Marie Helen Burns on April 22, 1916, in Portland. She graduated from Grant High School. She was a homemaker and also was a retail salesperson for several years. She was a member of the church and a former officer of the Villa Garden Club. In 1934, she married Donald O. Barnes; he died in 1999.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon M. Tracy; sons, Donald W., Thomas O. and Dale R.; sister, Diane Allen; 11 grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to the church.

Ernest James Buhlinger

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Ernest James Buhlinger, who died April 19 at age 85. Mr. Buhlinger was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Travers, Alberta. He immigrated to Estacada as a child and graduated from Estacada High School and Northwestern School of Law in Portland. He was an attorney for more than 40 years, including 25 years with Buhlinger & Dressler, until retiring in 1984. He then lived in Welches. He was past president of the Mt. Hood Golf Club. In 1937, he married Mildred Dunlop; she died in 1980.

Survivors include his daughters, Nancy Craig and Sue Bednarz; son, Greg; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Wilfred Burgess

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Christ Episcopal Church in Lake Oswego for Wilfred Burgess, who died April 19 at age 86. Mr. Burgess was born Oct. 21, 1914, in Youngstown, Alberta. He immigrated to Portland and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the University of Oregon and later received a doctoral degree from the University of Portland. He moved to Gresham in 1959 and was an administrator for Mt. Hood Community College until his retirement in 1977. He was past president of the Oregon Education Association. He moved to Tigard in the late 1970s. In 1941, he married Margaret VanMatre.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Larry, Steve and Phil; daughter, Sally Bruner; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 3161, Tualatin, OR 97062. Arrangements by Heritage Memorial.

Donald R. Byrd

A service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Donald R. Byrd, who died April 18 at age 54. Mr. Byrd was born Dec. 28, 1946, in Portland. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a self-employed carpenter. In 1965, he married Dianne Kautz.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Ronald and Travis; stepdaughter, Michelle Radtke; mother, Irene; and one grandchild.

Russell Herbert Califf

Russell Herbert Califf died April 11, 2001, at age 75. Mr. Califf was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Oregon City. He graduated from Oregon City High School and Lewis & Clark College. He was a lithographer for various companies, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his brothers, Lindy and Charles; sister, May LeClair; companion, Shirley D. Haynes; and friend and guardian, Roy Gyllstrom.

Service held. Interment in Mountain View cemetery. Arrangements by Holman Hankins Bowker & Waud.

Ruth Conrad

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Ruth Conrad, who died April 20 at age 93. Miss Conrad was born May 15, 1907, in Portland. She graduated from Washington High School and the University of Oregon. She was a secretary and statistician for the state of Oregon in public health services for 23 years until retiring.

There are no survivors.

Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park. Remembrances to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in care of Mt. Hood Chapter 144.

Thelma E. Curfman

Thelma E. Curfman died April 15, 2001 at age 90. Mrs. Curfman was born Thelma E. Vanderpool on Nov. 16, 1910, in St. Johns. She was raised in the Portland area. She retired from Textronix in 1974. In 1933, she married Ralph Curfman; he died in 1966.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Resner; and one grandchild.

Private service. Interment in North Yamhill cemetery. Remembrances to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Macy and Son.

Arnold W. Erikson

Arnold W. "Arnie" Erikson died April 15, 2001, at age 82. Mr. Erikson was born March 4, 1919, in Portland. He graduated from Jefferson High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in North Africa. He was a machinist for Metro Steel Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986. He married Olive Wilson in 1966.

Survivors include wife; brother, Roy; and sisters, Anna Martinson and Mayo Rushing.

No service. Arrangements by St. Johns Funeral Home.

Signe Elvera Farr

Signe Elvera Farr died April 17, 2001, at age 91. Mrs. Farr was born Signe Hellund on Aug. 27, 1909 in Seattle. A homemaker, she moved to Portland in 1951. In 1934, she married Arthur E. Farr.

Survivors include her husband; son, Dale A.; daughters, Johanna Padie and Janet Emannuel; sister, Ellen Gellein; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private service. Interment in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. Remembrances to William Temple House. Arrangements by Finley's Sunset Hills.
