Wesley Allan Schaeffer

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church for Wesley Allan Schaeffer, who died April 25 at age 84. Mr. Schaeffer was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Duluth, Minn. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota. He was a comptroller for a ship-building company during World War II and moved to Lake Oswego in 1949. He was an accountant for a towing company and later was a managing partner in Wilsonville Concrete Products until the time of his death. In 1939, he married Mary E. "Betty" Woodworth.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Charles A., Mark A. and William P.; daughters, Nancy J. Brink and Mary J. Corless; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His son Thomas Woodworth Schaeffer died in 1979.

Interment in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. Remembrances to Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, Calif. Arrangements by Zeller Chapel of the Roses.

Kenneth Elmer Simpson

A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Kenneth Elmer Simpson, who died April 26 at age 84. Mr. Simpson was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Beloit, Kan. He moved to the Portland area in the mid-1930s. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a truck driver for Langendorf Bakery (later Franz Bakery) until retiring in 1974. In 1965, he married Della W. Devlin.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Sandra Wellman and Keni-Ellen Owings; stepdaughter, Nancy LeClaire; stepson, Marc Jacobsen; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His daughter Judy Barlow died earlier.

Remembrances to the Oregon City Elks Scholarship Trust Fund. Arrangements by Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud.

Richard E. Thomas

Richard E. "Ric" Thomas died April 22, 2001, at age 46. Mr. Thomas was born May 29, 1954, in McMinnville. He graduated from the Oregon Police Academy in 1977. He served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1994, he graduated from Western Baptist College. He was a deputy sheriff for Marion County from 1975 until 1981, and then was a private investigator for several years. He was chief investigator for the Attorney General's office in the financial fraud section of the Justice Department for the last 15 years. He was also sergeant of reserves and cadets in the Stayton Police Department and was a certified instructor for National White Collar Crime Investigators. In 1972, he married Marsha Durkee.

Survivors include his wife; son, Richard Thomas II; stepson, Matt Baldwin; daughter, Andrea Thomas; stepdaughter, Shannon Baldwin; mother, Donnis; brother, Bob; sister, Pam Gregory; and two grandchildren.

A service was held in Salem. Interment in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. Remembrances to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Chapel of the Gardens in Salem.

Nicholas Aristides Vanikiotis

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for Nicholas Aristides Vanikiotis, who died April 28 at age 76. A trisagion service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in Riverview Abbey Funeral Home. Mr. Vanikiotis was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Portland. He graduated from Grant High School and the University of Portland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. He was a food broker for several companies, including Pillsbury for 25 years, until retiring in 1995. He was a lifelong member of the church and a past president of Inspirators of Oregon, a food broker group. In 1949, he married Ann Angelis.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Harry and John; sisters, Vacelia Vanikiotis and Aliki Otterson; and four grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp.

Geraldine Bernice Wilson

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, in First United Methodist Church in Newberg for Geraldine Bernice Wilson, who died April 24 at age 85. Mrs. Wilson was born Geraldine Bernice Abernathy on Sept. 9, 1915, in Portland. She was a homemaker and lived all her life in the Dundee and Newberg areas. She was a longtime member of the church. In 1938, she married Philip Wilson; he died in 1996.

Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Carlson; sister, Louise Schaad; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Julianna E. Ahrend

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Lake Grove Presbyterian Church for Julianna E. Ahrend, who died Jan. 21 of cancer at age 59. Mrs. Ahrend was born Nov. 13, 1941, in Portland. Her maiden name was Klug. She graduated in 1959 from Beaverton High School and later from the University of Oregon Medical School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and a registered nurse for Doernbecher Children's Hospital and later for Gladstone Convalescent Center for about 20 years before her retirement in 1999. She was member of the church. In 1963, she married F. Thomas Ahrend; he died in 1991.

Survivors include her sons, Brent, Steve and Jeff; brother, John Klug; and three grandchildren.

Private interment will be in River View cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Northwest Medical Teams. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home.

David L. Arias Sr.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in St. Agatha Catholic Church for David L. Arias Sr., who died Jan. 20 of a blood virus at age 64. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Wilhelm Funeral Home. The church for the Mass was changed.

Raymond Russell Cowling

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Zeller Chapel of the Roses for Raymond Russell Cowling, who died Jan. 18 of a heart attack at age 63. Mr. Cowling was born April 16, 1937, in Portland, where he lived all his life. He attended Benson Polytechnic High School and then served in the U.S. Navy. He was a truck driver for O'Neill Transfer for about 25 years before retiring in 1997. In 1965, he married Lois DeBord; she died in 1993.

Survivors include his son, Raymond Shawn; stepsons, Dennis DeBord, Gene DeBord and Greg DeBord; brother, John T.; and one grandchild.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a favorite charity.

Malcolm G. Dir

Malcolm G. Dir died Jan. 15, 2001, of a stroke at age 84. A private service was held. Mr. Dir was born April 5, 1916, in Elgin, Neb. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands. He moved to Portland after the war. He was a salesman for Aluminum Roofing and Siding, then was a cook for several Portland-area restaurants, including Waddles, until suffering a stroke in the mid-1990s. In 1950, he married Annalee Baldwin; she died in 1996.

Survivors include his sons, Adrian Johnson, Richard Dir and Rolland Dir; daughters, Donna Weigant and Sheri Polito; sisters, Dion Poulos and Evelyn Smith; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Portland. Arrangements were by Aftercare Cremation & Burial Service.

Helen Lena Glick

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel for Helen Lena Glick, who died Jan. 23 of cancer at age 79. Mrs. Glick was born April 5, 1921, in Salem. Her maiden name was Sebern. She lived most of her life in Woodburn, where she and her husband owned Woodburn Radiator and Glass from 1950 until their retirement in 1979. She was a member of Woodburn United Methodist Church. In 1955, she married Roy Glick.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Richard Glick, Duane Fulps and Robert Fulps; daughters, Sonja Curtis, Sharon Guenther and Linda Fulps; brother, Ralph Sebern Jr.; sisters, Donna Talus and Juanita Parlee; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Willamette Falls Hospice.

Ralph Duncan Gray

Ralph Duncan Gray died Jan. 11, 2001, at age 85. A private service was held. Mr. Gray was born April 28, 1915, in Portland, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Franklin High School. He was a firefighter with the Portland Fire Bureau and then a policeman with the Portland Police Bureau for 20 years until a gunshot wound forced his retirement in the early 1960s. He was a member of the Milwaukie congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. In 1938, he married Barbara I. Fitzpatrick.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lynda M. Peterson and Bernardine I. Hale; brothers, Carson and Thomas; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements were by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Christine M. Harbinsky

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Lake Grove Presbyterian Church for Christine M. Harbinsky, who died Jan. 16 of a stroke at age 90. Mrs. Harbinsky was born May 22, 1910, in Moses Lake, Wash. Her maiden name was Johnson. She moved in 1943 to Lake Oswego and was a homemaker and a member and elder of the church. In 1935, she married Benjamin Harbinsky; he died in 1986.

Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Warninghoff; son, Kent B.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Autistic Society of Oregon, P.O. Box 13884, Salem, OR 97309. Arrangements are by Portland Memorial Funeral Home.

Donna Lee Hart

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in New Life @ Glendoveer Seventh-day Adventist Church, 15150 N.E. Glisan St., for Donna Lee Hart, who died Jan. 21 at age 65. Mrs. Hart was born Oct. 20, 1935, in Hardin, Mont., and moved to Wapato, Wash., as a child. Her maiden name was Roh. She moved in 1972 to Portland. She was a teacher's aide for the Portland Public Schools for about 10 years, primarily at Humboldt and King elementary schools, retiring in 1993. She was a member of University Park Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1955, she married Douglas R. Hart.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Susan L. Bell and Debbie S. Willard; parents, Peter and Lydia Roh; brother, Melvin Roh; and seven grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.
