Charles S. Tilton

Charles S. Tilton, 94, of Chapel Hill, N.C. died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at the Carol Woods Retirement Community Health Center in Chapel Hill where he had resided since 1979. His wife, Lois Joy Hanson Tilton, also of the Carol Woods Retirement Community preceded him in death in 1984. Both were members of the Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Tilton was born March 8, 1909 in Ashland, Ore., the son of Charles F. Tilton. He was educated in the Oregon public schools and graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1930. At OSU he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi (scholastic honorary), Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Tau and Etta Kappa Nu (engineering honoraries), and Beta Theta Pi (social fraternity). He later attended the graduate schools of OSU, M.I.T., Harvard, and Tufts Universities. During the 1930s he was employed by the Bell Telephone Laboratories, N.Y., the Western Electric Company, N.J., and as vice principal of Klamath Falls High School, Ore. In 1946 Mr. Tilton joined the staff of the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories in Bedford, Mass. where he engaged in the development of vehicles and instrumentation of geophysics of the atmosphere and space research. He was the director of the Balloon Development Laboratory and senior engineer for the Aerospace Instrumentation Laboratory.

Mr. Tilton entered the Navy in 1942 and was Officer-in Charge of electronics training at the Philadelphia Navy Shipyard before his discharge in 1946 as Lieutenant Commander. He continued in the Naval Reserve Research Program in Boston, Mass. where he achieved the rank of Captain in 1959. He retired as a staff member in 1969. He was a member of Sigma Xi and the Scientific Research Society and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Following his retirement from the Air Force Laboratory in 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Tilton moved from their Arlington, Mass. home to Sanford, N.C. until moving to Carol Woods in 1979.

Survivors include one daughter, Grace Tilton Cuttino; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003, at The Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill. Burial will be at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home prior to the services.

Memorials may be made to the South orange Rescue Squad, Chapel Hill or the American Cancer Society.

Shayla Briner

Shayla Briner, 62, of Ashland, died on her birthday, Monday, June 23, 2003.

She was born June, 23, 1941.

Ms. Briner received her art degree from Southern Oregon University and produced original tie-dye designs on clothing which she sold at Lithia Artisan's Market. She was also a member of the Lithia Artisan's Guild. She assisted immigrants in need in Arizona and traveled to Mexico to teach English. She loved the language, the people, and her students in Mexico.

Survivors include one daughter, Melanie of Portland; her brother, David of Arcata, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in her honor on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at 7 p.m. at Havurah Shir Hadash, 185 N. Mountain Ave., of which she was a founding member. All are welcome.

Those attending are encouraged to wear tie-dye clothing and bring a dessert or snack to share.

Ellen T. Stevens

A memorial service for Ellen Taylor Stevens will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland. Pastor Scott Delgarno of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. A private family inurnment will be at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Mrs. Stevens, 69, of Ashland, died Monday, July 7, 2003 at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chapter EE PEO Memorial Endowment, c/o Southern Oregon University Foundation, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, Ore. 97520, or the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund, P.O. Box 626, Ashland, Ore. 97520.

She was born Dec. 24, 1933, in Mobile, Ala., to Ellen and William Taylor Jr. She graduated from Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn., in 1951, and attended East Tennessee State University. On Nov. 23, 1954, in Wiesboden, Germany, she married John Rodney "Rod" Stevens, who survives. Following Mr. Stevens' career as a U.S. Army officer in the Corps of Engineers, and five years in Steamboat Springs, Colo., the family moved to Ashland in 1976.

Mrs. Stevens was involved in the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter EE of the PEO Sisterhood, the Tudor Guild, Fortnightly Study Club and other small groups.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Laura Williamson, Lake Oswego, and Libby Hughes, North Bend; a son, John R. Stevens Jr., Portland; a sister, Lee Taylor Thomas, Portland; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Marjorie Jo Clark

Marjorie Jo Clark, 62, of Medford, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. A private service will be held.

She was born Jan. 20, 1941, in Grants Pass, to Bonnie and Ed Cooper. She was raised in Glendale and Medford and graduated from Crater High School in 1959. On Nov. 7, 1959, in Reno, Nev., she married William George Clark who survives.

Mrs. Clark worked at Harry and David for many years.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, mushroom hunting, antiques and growing house plants.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Bill, Eugene, Jim, Hyatt Lake, and Steve, Medford; two brothers, Cliff Cooper, Medford and Bob Cooper, Seattle; two sisters, Linda Moore, Seattle, and Alice Salomon, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Arrangements are under Litwiller -Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Adrienne Rae Castleman

A memorial potluck celebration will be held for Adrienne Ray Castleman at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the residence of Brian and Selena Mendolia, 1845 Old Stage Road, Central Point, Ore.

Ms. Castleman, 48, of Medford, died Wednesday, July 9. 2003 at her home.

She was born April 30, 1955 to Devona and Ace Castleman in Yuba City, Calif.

Ms. Castleman was a long-term survivor of HIV/AIDS virus. She was an avid supporter of medical marijuana and Oregon's Medical Marijuana Act. She was devoted to seeking medical knowledge in this area and educated other patients about the legal medical usage of marijuana.

She is survived by one son, Ronald Schmidt of Portland, Ore.; her long term friend Deanna K. Andrews; two brothers and one sister.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory, Medford.

Jessie Dora Martin

Jessie Dora Martin, 86, of Ashland, died Saturday, July 12, 2003 at home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Alfred 'Al' E. White

The funeral for Alfred "Al" E. White will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Ashland Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Douglas Brumbaugh and David White will officiate. Friends may pay their respects at the church. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. White, 87, formerly of Ashland, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at a Tualatin hospital.

He was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Omaha, Neb., to Angel and Margaret (Williams) White. The family moved to St. Louis when he was 12. He later moved to Parsons, Kan., where he graduated from Parsons High School and attended college for three years.

After college, Mr. White worked for the City of Parsons Police Department until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served during World War II. On Nov. 6, 1945, in Lawrence, Kan., he married Geneva Johnson, who survives.

The Whites moved to El Paso, Texas, where Mr. White worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years, retiring as a branch supervisor in 1972. After retirement he and his wife moved to Ashland, then to Tualatin in 1999, and had recently returned to Medford.

He was a member of Ashland Church of the Nazarene.

He was known for his sense of humor and practical jokes. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys football fan and enjoyed jewelry making, rock hounding, woodworking on clocks and tables, hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Fred White, El Paso, Texas, Mitch White, Medford, Doyle Tabor, Tigard, and Dave White, Fredricksburg, Texas; three daughters, Joliene Williams, Ashland, Kay Brunson, Fort Worth, Texas, and Martha Jones, Leavenworth, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Sonny White; and two brothers, Bill and Tom.

Arrangements are under the direction of Attrell's Sherwood Funeral Chapel, Newberg, Ore.
