Melvon D. Brady

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Portland for Melvon D. Brady, who died July 13 at age 89. Mr. Brady was born Feb. 6, 1912, in Eagle Creek. He graduated from Rufus High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe. He was a lumberman for Simpson Plywood for more than 20 years and then was a custodian for the Milwaukie Public Library until retiring in 1977. In 1984, he married Joan Elliott.

Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Nancy Wilson and Sally Stai; sister, Mildred Gimble; and seven grandchildren.

Remembrances to the memorial gardens of his church. Arrangements by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Wilber 'Bill' Deahl

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel for Wilber "Bill" Deahl, who died July 16 at age 79. Mr. Deahl was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Shawnee, Okla. He was a sales engineer for Lloyd Control in Seattle, retiring in 1987. He moved to Portland in 1989 and to Enumclaw, Wash., in 1999. In 1941, he married Mildred "Billie" Kosted.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Gary A., Lynn A. and Craig A.; sister, Mauritta D. Helberg; and 10 grandchildren.

Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Gresham. Remembrances to Providence Hospice of Seattle.

Bernard C. Dusa

A recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Portland for Bernard C. "Bernie" Dusa, who died July 14 at age 67. A memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in the church. Mr. Dusa was born May 9, 1934, in Portland. He graduated from Gresham High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Electromatic in Portland for more than 40 years, retiring as a manager in 1996. In 1955, he married Charlene Bergsma.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Charles and Tim; daughters, Lynn Dusa, Cindy Pederson and Christine Ford; brother, Richard; sisters, Dorene Kemp and Teddi Wilson; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Gresham Funeral Chapel.

Kenneth R. Ford Sr.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove for Kenneth R. "Kenny" Ford Sr., who died July 14 at age 53. Mr. Ford was born Feb. 7, 1948, in Reydell, Ark., and was raised in Buckeye, Ariz. He moved in 1965 to Gaston and was a timber faller, a tree planter for the U.S. Forest Service and then an equipment operator for Heikes Farms in Gaston for the past 25 years.

Survivors include his son, Kenneth R. Jr.; daughter, Molly; brother, Douglas; and sisters, Doris Gerdes, Lois Thompson and Joyce Stevens.

Remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Fuiten Rose & Hoyt.

Ruth N. Kafka

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes for Ruth N. Kafka, who died July 1 at age 79. Mrs. Kafka was born Ruth Phillips on Dec. 27, 1921, in Reserve, Kan. She graduated from nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, Colo. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps in the Philippines. After the war, she lived in Weott, Calif., where she was a homemaker, until moving to Salem in 1985, and to Portland in 1999. In 1948, she married George Kafka; he died in 1985.

Survivors include her son, George II; daughters, Kay Anderson, Toni Skelton and Gerri Hendricks; and three grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to Providence ElderPlace.

Gertrude Jane Korb

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Attrell's Sherwood Funeral Chapel for Gertrude Jane Korb, who died July 14 at age 83. Mrs. Korb was born Gertrude Jane Allison on April 14, 1918, in Sherwood. She graduated from Tigard High School and Oregon Normal School and then taught for two years in St. Helens. Later, she was a secretary, retiring from Walt Korb Insurance about 1985. In 1945, she married Walter Korb.

Survivors include her husband; son, Steve; daughter, Janet Egli; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment in Pleasant View cemetery in Sherwood. Remembrances to the Sherwood Senior Center.

Katharine Mason

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Milwaukie Presbyterian Church for Katharine Mason, who died July 13 at age 91. Mrs. Mason was born Katherine Van Antwerp on Jan. 17, 1910, in Forest Grove. She moved to Portland in 1925 and graduated from Jefferson High School and the University of Oregon. She was librarian for the University of Oregon, Milwaukie and Clackamas county libraries and later was an elementary teacher in Wilsonville and at Hector Campbell School in Milwaukie, retiring in 1972.

Survivors include her son, David W.; daughter, Susannah Westphal; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Disposition by donation to Oregon Health & Science University. Remembrances to the Fish emergency fund. Arrangements by Peake.

James Wilson 'Bill' McCoy

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 19, in Church of the Resurrection in Tualatin for James Wilson "Bill" McCoy, who died July 12 at age 78. An Office of the Dead will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Mr. McCoy was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Lake Grove, and moved to Portland at age 13. He graduated from Jefferson High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Pacific. Afterward, he returned to Portland, and moved to Lake Oswego in 1974. He was a city building inspector and later taught welding at Portland Community College, retiring in 1986. In 1948, he married Hazel S. Smith.

Survivors include his wife; son, Stephen; daughter, Susan Canfield; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the church. Arrangements by Hillside Chapel.

Duaine E. McPherson

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in St. Mary of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Ridgefield, Wash., for Duaine E. "Mac" McPherson, who died July 15 at age 67. Mr. McPherson was born May 1, 1934, in Grand Forks, N.D., and moved to Castle Rock, Wash., as a teen-ager. He served in the U.S. Army and then was a produce merchandiser for United Grocers for 38 years before retiring in 1996. In 1958, he married Cis Nichols; they were divorced.

Survivors include his daughter, Monica Kuehn; sons, Fred, Steven, David and John; stepmother, June; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Richard Eugene Miller

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in the Five Oaks Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cedar Mill for Richard Eugene Miller, who died July 11 at age 48. Mr. Miller was born April 16, 1953, in Portland. He served in the U.S. Army and was a maintenance technician for Tektronix for the past 19 years. In 1995, she married Daphne Anderson.

Survivors include his wife; son, Brendon; daughter, Tori; mother, Neydeen Corey; brothers, Timm and Terry; sister, Pam Layman; and one grandchild.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements by Finley's.

Charlotte Evelyn Putnam

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Parkrose United Methodist Church in Portland for Charlotte Evelyn Putnam, who died July 16 at age 76. Mrs. Putnam was born Charlotte Cogger on Dec. 9, 1924, in Portland. She graduated from Clinton Kelly High School of Commerce. She was a bookkeeper and office manager for Northwest Food Processors Association for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include her daughters, Stephanie Putnam, Carol Putnam and Melodie Putnam Reeser; son, James T.; sisters, Deroma Sanford and Betty Gallucci; and two grandchildren.

John Austin Richeson

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, in First United Methodist Church in Vancouver, Wash., for John Austin Richeson, who died July 15 at age 78. Mr. Richeson was born Oct. 12, 1922, in Portland. He graduated from Lincoln High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. After the war, he graduated from the University of Oregon and was an insurance agent for Durham Bates and Employers Mutual, retiring from Saif Corp. in 1981. In the 1960s, he owned John Richeson Insurance. In 1983, he married Mary Lou Roberts Ellis.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Cathy Cookson, Marsha Richeson and Diane Goodboe; stepdaughters, Sue Merli, Bonny Olson and Debby Galaopoulos; stepsons, Jim White and Jerry Ellis; and eight grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to his church. Arrangements by Vancouver Funeral Chapel.

Loretta Shuell

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City for Loretta Shuell, who died July 15 at age 89. Mrs. Shuell was born Loretta Haumschild on Sept. 21, 1911, in Pittsville, Wis. She moved to Oregon City in the 1940s and was a bookkeeper for several companies, including Fredrich's Hardware, Carey Oil and St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, and retiring from Kellum Motors in Gladstone in about 1976. In 1950, she married Joseph F. Shuell; he died in 1992.

Survivors include her son, Daniel J.; daughter, Lynette M. Kostechka; brothers, Victor Haumschild and Donald Haumschild; sister, Agnes Mehlbrech; and four grandchildren.

Interment in the church cemetery. Remembrances to her church. Arrangements by Hillside Chapel.
