Verda Lucille Barnes

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Metolius Friends Church in Metolius for Verda Lucille Barnes, who died Aug. 29 at age 81. Mrs. Barnes was born Verda Lucille Jones on April 6, 1920, in Groveland, Idaho. She moved to Portland in 1940. She worked for Frito-Lay until retiring as a floor foreman. She moved to the Madras area in 1981. She was also a hospice volunteer in Madras for 10 years. In 1938, she married William B. Barnes; he died in 1983.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Huey, Janelle Orcutt and Melissa Laur; son, W. Christopher; sister, Ruth Patton; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Interment in Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Remembrances to Christian Outreach International Missionary Fund in Vero Beach, Fla. Arrangements by Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras.

Gwendolyn M. Bixler

Gwendolyn M. Bixler died Aug. 21, 2001, at age 70. Mrs. Bixler was born Gwendolyn M. Jones on April 26, 1931, in Portland, where she lived all her life. She graduated from Grant High School and the University of Oregon. She was a homemaker. She married Richard M. Bixler; they divorced.

Survivors include her son, James Bixler; daughter, Laurie Muha; sister, Beverly Ruggles; and five grandchildren.

Service held. Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park. Remembrances to Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital. Arrangements by Finley's.

Fred Blackman

A gathering will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in the home of his son Mike for Fred Blackman, who died Aug. 29 at age 77. Mr. Blackman was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Union Mills. He graduated from Molalla Union High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutians and India. He was a logger and then a forklift operator for Avison Lumber in Molalla for about 30 years, retiring in 1988. In 1947, he married Marian Oeser.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Craig, Mike and Troy; daughters, Vicki Jones, Peggy Smith, Debby Marquez and Tracy Tallman; brother, Paul; sister, Addie Wilbroad; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Molalla Funeral Chapel.

Marion Elizabeth Bowen

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, in Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard for Marion Elizabeth Bowen, who died Aug. 30 at age 83. Ms. Bowen was born Marion Elizabeth Williams on July 20, 1918, in Mangum, Okla. She moved to the Portland area from Kansas in 1973, and was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1985. She was a member and deacon of the church and a volunteer for the Friends of Beaverton Library.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Logan; son, Mike; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Martha M. Chaput

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Beaverton for Martha M. Chaput, who died Aug. 30 at age 87. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, in Pegg Paxson & Springer Chapel. Mrs. Chaput was born Martha M. LeBrun on Jan. 29, 1914, in Langdon, N.D. A homemaker, she moved to Beaverton in 1956. In 1934, she married Emil Chaput; he died in 1973.

Survivors include her daughters, Yvonne Dulay, Laura Kimber, Norma Van Dyke, Pauline Edwards, Marilyn Stubblefield and Debbie McMains; sons, Oscar, Gerald and Gerard; sister, Marion Darcy; brothers, Ray LeBrun, Leo LeBrun, Emil LeBrun, Paul LeBrun and Chuck LeBrun; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Her son Marcel died in 1999, and her daughter Emily Bessette died in the late 1960s.

Interment in Skyline Memorial Gardens.

Frances M. Cole

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, in Southwest Hills Baptist Church in Beaverton for Frances M. Cole, who died Aug. 28 at age 89. Mrs. Cole was born Frances M. Coles on Feb. 4, 1912, in Portland. She graduated from Franklin High School. She moved in 1957 to Lake County, Calif., where she was a tax assessor in the county assessor's office until her retirement in 1978, when she moved to Spokane. She moved to Beavertonin 1981. In 1929, she married Cecil W. Cole.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Shirley Dutcher; son, David; sister, Margaret Morris; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park. Remembrances to the church. Arrangements by Mt. Scott.

Pauline Cook

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel for Pauline Cook, who died Aug. 28 at age 101. Mrs. Cook was born Pauline Helzer on Jan. 24, 1900, in Lincoln, Neb., and was raised in Portland. She was a foreman for Coast Veneer for 12 years, retiring in 1964.

Survivors include her grandson, Joe; and great-grandchildren, Natalie and Alexandra. Her son, Robert, died in 1980.

Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Helen Vieno Kangas

A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Rose City cemetery Mausoleum for Helen Vieno Kangas, who died May 29 at age 86. Mrs. Kangas was born Helen Vieno Hagman on Sept. 27, 1914, in Portland, where she lived all her life. She graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School and was a homemaker and a seamstress out of her home. In 1933, she married Donald Tony Kangas; he died in 1991.

Survivors include her sons, Marvin and John; daughter, Donna Hornback; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Rose City.

Warren Carl Liebig

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Pegg Paxson & Springer Chapel in Beaverton for Warren Carl Liebig, who died Aug. 29 at age 79. Mr. Liebig was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Minneapolis. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and earned a Bronze Star. He moved to Newberg in the late 1940s and to Beaverton in 1964. He worked for GTE for 37 years, retiring as a cable splicer in 1987. In 1963, he married Linda Anne Taft.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Paul, Chuck, Bill, Doug and Leslie; brother, Hugh; and eight grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

John Lindsay McClure

A memorial gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, in Room One of the interpretive center of Tualatin Hills Nature Park in Beaverton for John Lindsay McClure, who died Aug. 27 at age 46. Mr. McClure was born Oct. 22, 1954, in Champaign, Ill., and was raised in Maryland, New York and California. He moved to Beaverton from Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1988 and was a self-employed plumber, a professional musician, most recently playing Irish music and several string instruments, a professional photographer and a volunteer for Special Olympics. He was attending Portland Community College. In 1979, he married Jamie Brown.

Survivors include his wife; son, Walker; daughters, Elisabeth, Gwendolyn and Cameron; father, Andrew; and brothers, David McClure, Rick McClure, Bob McClure and Beau Brown.

Remembrances to McClure Family College Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank. Arrangements by American Burial.

Helen Schereck

Helen Schereck died Aug. 23, 2001, at age 77. Mrs. Schereck was born Helen Rein on July 23, 1924, in Wishek, N.D. She lived in Portland for 57 years. She worked as a maid for Travel Lodge, retiring in 1994. In 1945 she married Ray Schereck; he died about 10 years ago.

Survivors include her sisters, Olga "Dorothy" Stevenson and Nathalia "Daily" Rein.

No service. Remembrances to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Portland Funeral Alternatives.

Martha Rose Shirley

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Martha Rose Shirley, who died Aug. 28 at age 83. Mrs. Shirley was born Martha Rose Roddy on Nov. 14, 1917, in Howe, Texas, and moved to McMinnville in about 1921. She graduated from Willamette University. She lived in Salem, Alaska and Colorado before settling in Portland in 1965, and was a homemaker and a librarian for several Portland Public Schools. In 1942, she married Raymond F. Shirley; he died in 1983.

Survivors include her son, Jeff; daughter, Janice; sisters, Blanche Craig and Jo Bonney; and two grandchildren. Her son Fletcher died in 1992.

Interment in Sunset Hills Memorial Park.

Richard Allen Speck

A memorial gathering will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, in Barton Park for Richard Allen Speck, who died Aug. 25 at age 47. Mr. Speck was born Sept. 29, 1953, in Portland, and was raised in Troutdale. He was a mechanic in several wrecking yards. He moved to Longview, Wash., in 1999. In 1989, he married Alice A. Barker.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Larry and Richard C.; daughter, Carla Johnson; brothers, Bert, Rodney, Billy and Kavin; sisters, Carolyn Hawkins, Candy Belles, Roxann Gile, Pauline Speck and Carla Ash; and 14 grandchildren.
