Shirley Ann Steinmetz

Shirley Ann Steinmetz died Aug. 21, 2001, at age 82. Mrs. Steinmetz was born Shirley Thomas on July 19, 1919, in Portland. She was a homemaker and had lived in Portland, Beaverton, Tillamook and Hillsboro. In 1936, she married Raymond Steinmetz; he died in 1982.

Survivors include her sons, Raymond, Ronald, Robert, Doug and Steve; daughters, Linda Phillips, Patricia Steinmetz, Kathy Steinmetz, Shirley Grogan and Christine Jansen; sister, Elva Martin; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Arrangements by Donelson, Sewell & Mathews Mortuary.

Dr. Irmlein Waehneldt

Dr. Irmlein Waehneldt died Aug. 27, 2001, at age 81. Dr. Waehneldt was born Irmlein Gruber on Nov. 2, 1919, in Mainz, Germany. She graduated from medical school in Germany and practiced gynecology until 1958, when she became a homemaker. She immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in Michigan. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1975. In 1958, she married Dr. Niels R. Waehneldt.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Hanns Hasche-Kluender, Michael Gruber and Tilman Hasche; daughter, Antje Rempe; sister, Elisabeth Kuehne; and 14 grandchildren.

Private service. Remembrances to the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington in Vancouver. Arrangements by Ross Hollywood.

Pamela Dawn Arnett

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Pamela Dawn Arnett, who died Sept. 29 at age 49. Mrs. Arnett was born Pamela Dawn Person of Feb. 28, 1952, in Chicago. A homemaker, she moved to Portland in about 1976. In 1985, she married David Arnett.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Sondra and Desiree; and son, Dustin.

Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Charles Edward Baker

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in Community of Christ Church in Vancouver, Wash., for Charles Edward Baker, who died Sept. 22 at age 65. Mr. Baker was born June 21, 1936, in Gadsden, Ala. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Jackson State College in Alabama. He moved in 1961 to Portland and in 1973 to Vancouver, Wash. He was a kinesiologist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Vancouver for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He lived since 1999 in Palm Desert, Calif. He was a former board member of Orchard Hills Golf & Country Club in Washougal, Wash. In 1973, he married Myrna Axton.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Lalani M. Pitts; son, Ty E.; and three grandchildren.

Remembrances to Kaiser Permanente continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis unit in care of Medical Group Administration in Fontana, Calif. Arrangements by Palm Springs Mortuary in Palm Springs, Calif.

Richard W. Garvey

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in Zeller Chapel of the Roses for Richard W. "Dick" Garvey, who died Sept. 30 at age 85. Mr. Garvey was born April 15, 1916, in Walla Walla, and moved to Portland in 1923. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa, Japan. He was a dispatcher for Woodbury & Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He moved in 1965 to Vancouver, Wash. In 1958, he married Gloria Griggs.

Survivors include his wife.

Interment will be in Masonic cemetery in McMinnville. Remembrances to American Parkinson Disease in the neurology division, the University of Washington.

John Edward Kangas

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for John Edward Kangas, who died Sept. 30 at age 67. Mr. Kangas was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Ishpeming, Mich., and was raised in Seattle. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He was a sales manager for Olshen's Bottle Supply for the past 37 years, transferring to Portland in 1973. In 1966, he married Jacqueline Davis Meyer.

Survivors include his wife; sons, John E. II and Christopher D.; brothers, William, Charles and Joseph; sisters, Elizabeth Wilson and Diane Bradley; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Interment in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Remembrances to the American Lung Association.

Thomas C. Meinig

A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in St. Peter Catholic Church in Portland for Thomas C. Meinig, who died Oct. 1 at age 53. Mr. Meinig was born July 11, 1948, in Portland. He graduated from David Douglas High School and the University of Oregon. He was a special education teacher for 30 years in Gresham schools, retiring in 2000 from Gordon Russell Middle School. In 1978, he married Brenda Sue Hodges; she died in 2000.

Survivors include his daughters, Angela, Jennifer and Allison; mother, Jeanne; brothers, Michael, Carl, Tim and Edward; and sisters, Laura J. and Elaine Moore.

Interment in Lincoln Memorial Park. Remembrances to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Arrangements by Lincoln Memorial.

Gordon Spiro Odalovich

A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Portland for Gordon Spiro Odalovich, who died Sept. 21 at age 86. Mr. Odalovich was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Krivosije, Yugoslavia, now in Croatia. He immigrated in 1937 to Portland and was a baker for White Palace Bakery. After graduating from business college, he was a freight agent for Union Pacific Railroad for 32 years, retiring in 1976.

Survivors include his cousin, Milos Kovac; and nieces and a nephew.

Interment in St. George Monastery cemetery in Risan, Montenegro, Yugoslavia. Remembrances to his church at P.O. Box 20695, Portland, OR 97294. Arrangements by Rose City.

Ann F. O'Neill

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Portland for Ann F. O'Neill, who died Oct. 2 at age 89. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Scott Funeral Home. Mrs. O'Neill was born Ann F. Sckavone on May 14, 1912, in Portland. She graduated from Franklin High School. A homemaker, she was a 50-year member of the church and a sacristan. She coached softball at St. Ignatius School in the 1950s. In 1945, she married Robert O'Neill; he died in 1995.

Survivors include her sons, Mick, Patrick and Steve; sisters, Chris Rice and Rocky Palumbo; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. Remembrances to her church.

Josephine T. Pearson

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Wilhelm Funeral Home for Josephine T. Pearson, who died Oct. 2 at age 87. Mrs. Pearson was born Josephine Thompson on Dec. 17, 1913, in Bloomington, Neb. She graduated from Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and from White Memorial Hospital School of Nursing at Loma Linda University in Los Angeles and later received a bachelor's degree from Walla Walla College. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps in New Guinea and the Philippines. In 1949, she moved to Portland, where she was a homemaker. She was a volunteer for Portland Adventist Community Service Center until 2000. A 52-year member of the Stone Tower Seventh-day Adventist Church, she was a volunteer in its library and taught in its Sabbath school. In 1949, she married John Davidson Pearson Jr.; he died in 1992.

Survivors include her daughters, Dorothy Cupino and Beryl Haarsma; son, Thomas; and five grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the 3 Angel Broadcast Network in West Frankfort, Ill. Arrangements by Wilhelm.

Stanislaus Sahli

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portland for Stanislaus Sahli, who died Sept. 22 at age 65. Mr. Sahli was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Roscoe, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army. He moved in 1959 to Hillsboro and in about 1962 to Portland. He was an assistant manager at the North Lombard Kienow's, retiring for health reasons in 1990.

Survivors include his daughter, Sheri Mardelle Sahli-Nibeck; brothers, Ray, Jim and Laverne; sisters, Janice Kubitza and Norma Peterson; and two grandchildren.

Interment in Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances to the church. Arrangements by Telophase.

Vinode Kumar

'V.K.' Sawhney A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Cherry Park Presbyterian Church in Troutdale for Vinode Kumar "V.K." Sawhney, who died Sept. 23 at age 59.

Mr. Sawhney was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Qadian, India. In 1959, he immigrated to Oregon and then graduated from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. He was an attorney in Portland in private practice and a Willamette University instructor until 1989, when he moved to Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, where he continued his practice until retiring in 2000. For the past 18 months, he lived in Honolulu. In 1983, he married Nancy Mahre.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Ruby and Delia; and one grandchild.

Remembrances to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Ultimate Cremation in Honolulu.

Goldie Ruby Stevens

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in St. John's Funeral Home for Goldie Ruby Stevens, who died Oct. 2 at age 92. Mrs. Stevens was born Goldie Ruby Rayfield on July 14, 1909, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She moved in 1931 to St. Johns. She was a licensed practical nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and Legacy Emanuel Hospital before retiring in the 1960s. About 1925, she married Bill Bowers; they divorced. In 1952, she married Glenn Stevens; he died in 1992.

Survivors include her daughters, Billie Illias and Katherine Townsend; son, Jim Bowers; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Her son Jackie Bowers died in 1960; son Claude Bowers died in 2000; daughter Sylvia Thompson died in 1997.

Interment in Skyline Memorial Gardens.
