Robert L. Wells

A funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Vancouver, Wash., for Robert L. Wells, who died Sept. 28 at age 73. Mr. Wells was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Ridgefield, Wash. He was a long-haul truck driver for several companies, and then was self-employed until retiring in about 1990. He lived in Nehalem until returning to Ridgefield in April. In 1948, he married Betty J. Cardon; they divorced.

Survivors include his daughters, Peggy, Diana Bronkhorst, Debra Saniti and Cindy Hague; son, Randy; sister, Alice Stoudt; daughter-in-law and caretaker, Donna; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Interment in Eureka cemetery in Newport. Remembrances to any humane society.

Fredrick Clyde Baumgartner

A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Valley Memorial Park and Mausoleum for Fredrick Clyde Baumgartner, who died Sept. 27 at age 82. Mr. Baumgartner was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Harrisburg. He moved to Hillsboro in 1934 and graduated from Hillsboro High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during World War II in the Pacific. He worked for West Coast Telephone Co. until 1973, and was head janitor for the Reedville School District until retiring in 1981. He was Oregon Telco Credit Union president for 14 years. In 1941, he married Virginia P. Hoogduin; she died in 1996.

Survivors include his son, Fred; daughter, Diane Woff; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ivan Chesleigh Butcher

Ivan Chesleigh Butcher died Sept. 22, 2001, at age 93. Mr. Butcher was born Feb. 9, 1908, in Weston, W. Va. He lived in Ohio and California before moving to Grants Pass in 1944, where he owned and operated the E & I Market until retiring in 1971. He was a master mason in the Grants Pass Masonic Lodge. After retirement, he alternated between living in Portland and Yuma, Ariz. He moved full time to Portland in November 2000. In 1933, he married Edna Blunt.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Shirley L. Butcher; son, Howard; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter Dorothy Butcher died in 1946.

No service. Arrangements by Oregon Cremation.

Lola Louise Caputo

A funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Portland for Lola Louise Caputo, who died Sept. 27 at age 82. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the church. Mrs. Caputo was born Lola Louise Hunt on Aug. 5, 1919, in Kuna, Idaho. She moved to Beaverton in 1937 and was a seamstress for Jantzen for 20 years and later owned and operated an intimate apparel business for 30 years. She was a 50-year member of the church. She was a volunteer teacher's aide at Groener Elementary School. In 1938, she married Louis Joseph Caputo; he died in 1994.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Vanderzanden and Julie Mottern; sons, Ronald, Jerry, Paul and Steve; sisters, Florence Critchlow and Mary Higgins; brother, Charles Hunt; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Interment in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. Remembrances to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Finley's.

Gertrude Christine Carpenter

Gertrude Christine Carpenter died Sept. 13, 2001, at age 89. Mrs. Carpenter was born Gertrude Christine Gustafson on Feb. 26, 1912, in Gresham, where she lived all her life. She graduated from Gresham High School and Emanuel School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse for several nursing homes, including Carpenter's Rest Harbor Sanitarium in Powell Valley, until retiring in 1988. In 1941, she married James David Carpenter; he died in 1987.

Survivors include her sons, James R. and Dennis C.; daughter, Pamela J. Wilson; brother, Cecil R. Gustafson; and six grandchildren.

Service held. Interment in Forest Lawn cemetery. Remembrances to Gresham United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Bateman-Carroll.

Nettie Moleshead Foster

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Nettie Moleshead Foster, who died Sept. 25 at age 95. Mrs. Foster was born Nettie Moleshead on Nov. 18, 1905, in Chicago. She moved to Portland in the late 1930s and was a veterans' hospital secretary and a Selective Service board member. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She owned a boarding house in Southeast Portland. She was a member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. In 1960, she married William H. Foster; he died in the late 1960s.

Survivors include her nephew, James Scott.

Queen Ester Montgomery

A service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Queen Ester Montgomery, who died Sept. 26 at age 82. Mrs. Montgomery was born Queen Ester Hall on Jan. 5, 1919, in Leland, Miss. She moved to Portland during World War II and was a welder in the shipyards. She was a homemaker, a housekeeper for the YWCA for 20 years and a maintenance worker for Wonder Bread for more than 10 years until retiring. In 1945, she married Willis Montgomery; he died in 1997.

Survivors include her daughter, Christine Williams; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

George Weldon Morrison

George Weldon Morrison died Sept. 15, 2001, at age 81. Mr. Morrison was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Hancock, Mich. He was raised in Michigan and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the India-China-Burma theater. He moved to Salem in 1951 and lived in Dallas and Toledo before moving to Beaverton. He was a disc jockey for stations including KSLM, KPLK and KTDO, until 1968, when he began working for Tektronix as an electrical engineer. He retired in 1983. In 1942, he married Elizabeth Morgan; she died in November.

Survivors include his sons, George W. Jr., Jim R. and Walt A.; daughter, Lynda M. Ball; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No service. Arrangements by Pegg, Paxson & Springer.

Elinor Ruth Murphy

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for Elinor Ruth Murphy, who died Sept. 28 at age 68. Mrs. Murphy was born Elinor Ruth Anthony on March 30, 1933, in The Dalles. A homemaker, she moved to Portland in 1956, the year she married Frank Murphy.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Janet; son, David; brothers, Carroll Anthony and Nic Anthony; and sisters, Rita Hendrickson and Avon Anthony.

Lester J. Pagh

Lester J. Pagh died March 21, 2001, at age 82. Mr. Pagh was born May 12, 1919, in Dutchess, Alberta. He moved to the United States as a child. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a sawmill worker until retiring because of a disability. In 1999, he married Mae I. Van Fossen.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Kenneth L. and Bob; brothers, Albert A. and Ivan; and sister, Marge Fiskdal.

Private service. Arrangements by Aftercare.

Richard D. Palmer

Richard D. Palmer died Sept. 22, 2001, at age 73. Mr. Palmer was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Spokane. He served in the Seabees in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He moved to Portland and was a sanitation worker for Moreland Sanitation Service until retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his former wife and caregiver, Phyllis E.; daughters, Laura R. Brown, Cynthia M. Ward and Rhonda K. Boggess; sons, Richard M. and Christopher R.; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Private service. Arrangements by Mt. Scott Funeral Home.

Marilyn J. Steiner

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in Salmon Creek United Methodist Church in Salmon Creek, Wash., for Marilyn J. Steiner, who died Sept. 28 at age 64. Mrs. Steiner was born Marilyn J. Flindt on June 28, 1937, in Alameda, Calif. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1979 and was a quality assurance worker for Hewlett-Packard until retiring in 1999. In 1977, she married Ray Steiner.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Cynthia Jones and Stacy Riddle; sons, Harry Jones, Craig Jones, Kevin Jones and Marc Jones; sister, Elsie Jones; brothers, Stanley Flindt and Bob Flindt; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Northwood Park cemetery in Ridgefield, Wash. Remembrances to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Hamilton-Mylan in Vancouver.

Betty Bowman Malone

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in Canby Funeral Chapel for Betty Bowman Malone, who died Aug. 24 at age 77. Mrs. Malone was born Betty Bowman on May 12, 1924, in South Bend, Ind. She was a homemaker who moved from Minneapolis to Portland in 1975. In 1967, she married Richard B. Malone.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Vincent W. Poczik Sr. and Alan B. Poczik; stepson, Michael N.; stepdaughter, Kathleen A.; sisters, Mary Alice Cooreman and Shirley Talboom; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to Willamette Falls Hospice.
