Skyla Dawn Azzello

A memorial celebration of the life of Skyla Dawn Azzello will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 1:00 P.M., at the Cotton Memorial area of Lithia Park in Ashland.

Skyla Dawn Azzello, 27, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Nat Silverman

After a beautiful and giving life of nearly 95 years, Nat Silverman passed away in Ashland on Sept. 21. A memorial service to celebrate the goodness he brought into this world will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 E. Main Street in Ashland.

Mr. Silverman, who was buried last week in Phoenix, Ariz., moved to Ashland in 1998 after the death of his wife of 66 years in order to be close to his son Ron and daughter-in-law Myra. He resided at Mountain View Retirement Residence and was considered to be "the most dapper of gentlemen." Among the many friends he made in the Rogue Valley, he was known for his graciousness and his wit.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Silverman moved to Los Angeles as a youth and then to Phoenix where for nearly a half century he was a prominent leader of the Jewish community. He made his living as a furniture salesman but spent an equal amount of time in community service. At one time or another he headed most Jewish organizations in Phoenix and received several lifetime achievement awards for his work.

In addition to Ron and Myra, he is survived by his son Andy, a professor of law at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and his daughter-in-law Starr. He is also survived by four grandchildren including Brooke Sanders Silverman, who resides in Ashland and teaches at Emek Shalom's pre-school, and two great grandchildren.

Elva Pearl Schweiger

A funeral service for Elva Pearl Schweiger will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003 at 7 p.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind.

Those who wish may pay their respects at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home 5-7 p.m., on Tuesday prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Schweiger, 86, of Talent, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland. She was born Aug. 27, 1917 at Boston, Ind., the daughter of Edward L. Compton and the former Pearl Savilla Whitmore. She was raised in Richmond, Ind. Through the years she was a clerk at Standard Food Market, Montgomery Wards and Gause Floral Company. She also was a volunteer Gray Lady at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Ind. She was a coin collector and enjoyed her grandchildren. She moved to Ashland, in 1995.

On Sept. 25, 1936 in Richmond, she married Edward Schweiger, who preceded her in death in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Ed Schweiger of Charlotte, N.C. and John Schweiger of Ashland; one sister, Coral Lilly Halstead of Talent; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520 or the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 S. W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

James "Jim" Barrington Smith

James "Jim" Barrington Smith, 80, of Brookings, died September 18, 2003 of natural causes.

Mr. Smith was born on April 11, 1923 in Ashland to Albert "Bert" H. and Merle Muriel Halcyone (Gibson) Smith. He was raised in Ashland and attended Ashland High School, where he where he played football and basketball and graduated in 1941.

He attended Southern Oregon Normal School, now Southern Oregon University, where he also played football and basketball. He then transferred to University of Oregon to study for a year where he studied architecture and landscaping architecture.

During World War II he worked in vital service to infrastructure at Copco, now Pacific Power or Pacific Corp. This position grew into a lifetime career with the company, and he retired in 1988. While with the company, he operated heavy equipment, cats, lowboys and heavy trucks.

He married Anna Mae Platko in Ashland February 3, 1951 and they had one daughter, Melinda. Anna Mae died February 7, 1992.

Mr. Smith was a life-time member of the Elks Lodge No. 944 in Ashland, and a member of Local 659 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Jim was honest and known for his integrity. He was dedicated to his job, family and friends. He was artistic and enjoyed painting figurines, Christmas ornaments, doing woodwork and was a gardener who raised beautiful flowers.

James lived in Ashland until 1995, then he moved to Brookings where he married Jackie Smith on April 16, 1999.

Survivors include his wife Jackie; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and John Morrish of Sumner, Wash.; two step-children, Ron Smith and wife Maureen of Middleton, Idaho, and Peggy Buchanan and husband Dennis of Boise, Idaho; a step-daughter-in-law, Delia Smith of Fruitland, Idaho; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Ann Mae and a stepson, Tony Smith.

Memorial services were held Sept. 26 in Brookings.

Elna May Russell

Elna May Russell, of Ashland, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 at Linda Vista Care Center. She was 86. A private family service will be held.

Mrs. Russell was born Feb. 18, 1917 in Ashland to Frank Fitch and Affie May Plaisted Fitch. She was an active member of Rebekka Lodge in Ashland and advisor for Theta Rho and a campfire leader. She was also owned and operated restaurants.

She married her first husband, Ernest, July 28, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1980. She married Ed Russell on Nov. 11, 1984 in Ashland. He preceded her in death also.

Mrs. Russell enjoyed the outdoors and astrology. She is survived by children: Mary Gale Cook of Medford, Vieva Gene Swearingen of Cottonwood, Calif., Pat Rabjohn of Phoenix, James Gibson of Ashland, and thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Southern Oregon Chapter, 10 Crater Lake Ave. Medford.

A.J. MacGilvray

A.J. MacGilvray, 95 of Ashland, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 at his home. MacGilvray was born Sept. 27, 1907. Arrangements are being made by Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Shirley J. "Meme" Southern

The Funeral Mass for Shirley J. Southern was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, with Rev. Joseph Betschart celebrant. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland.

Shirley J. Southern, fondly known as Meme, was known as a woman of great courage and inspiration. She died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at her home in Phoenix.

She was born Nov. 30, 1925 in Little Falls, Minn. On March 18, 1944 in Little Falls she married Donald Mrozek, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1995. She later married Jack Southern, who preceded her in death in 1998.

For many years she lived in San Diego, where she waitressed at the officers club at North Island Naval Air Station. She moved to Ashland where she lived from 1986 to 1990, later moving to Talent and Phoenix.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. She enjoyed cribbage, music, trips to Reno and family gatherings. She also was involved in Senior Center activities.

Survivors include her companion, Bert Serrano, of Phoenix; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Catherine Mrozek of Ashland; son, Bruce Mrozek of San Diego, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jim Ricketson of Henderson, Nev.; brothers, Jack and Dick Lonnee of St. Paul, Minn. and Milton Lonnee II of Garden Grove, Calif.; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Hospice, c/o Providence Medford Medical Center Foundation, 1111 Crater Lake Avenue, Medford, OR 97504.
