Frederick Louis Mitchel, 87, of Ashland, died Friday (June 17, 2005) at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Myrtle Lay

Myrtle Lay, 91, of Medford, died Monday, (August 22, 2005) at Medford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. Arrangements: Litwiller- Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Clarence "Pat" Huntley Redmond

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clarence "Pat" Huntley Redmond will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2005 at the Masonic Lodge of Brookings, located at 412 Azalea Park Road, Brookings.

Mr. Redmond, 89, of Brookings (formerly of Medford) died September 24, 2005 at Parkview, after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born in Elmira, OR to Pearl and Hazel Redmond and grew up in Creswell, OR. He graduated from Creswell High School in 1935, where he was a star basketball player.

He majored in law at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. Two years later, he married his wife, Vieva Louise Buchanan on January 9, whom he met in college. Pat and Vieva then moved to Portland in 1937, where Pat worked in the Portland, OR shipyards during World War II. After the war, Pat and Vieva moved to Medford, OR to purchase farmland in the Griffin Creek area. Pat took up a job as the manager of the Classified Advertising Dept. at the Medford Mail Tribune, while also farming his own land.

Pat had many hobbies and interests, including hunting, fishing, and carpentry. He was a long-time member of the Lions and Elks clubs, and was a member of City Council for six years. Also, he devoted time throughout his life to helping people with developmental disabilities.

After living in their Medford, OR house for 42 years Pat and Vieva moved to Brookings, OR to live out the remainder of their years. There, they become founding members of the Unity Church of Brookings.

It was very important for Pat to spend time with his family. Pat's friends, peers, and co-workers thought very highly of him. He devoted his life to high standards of performance and morals. Pat and Vieva celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary on January 9, 2005.

Pat is survived by his wife, Vieva; sons, Michael and David Redmond; grandsons, Chris and Eric Redmond; granddaughter, April Vanderwal, and great-granddaughters Catherine, Theresa, Elizabeth, and Sarah.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Unity Church of Brookings, P.O. Box 6535, Brookings, OR 97415.

Herbert L. Riley Jr.

A memorial service for Herbert Lloyd Riley, Jr. will be at 12 noon Friday, September 30, 2005 at the Ashland Elks Lodge.

Mr. Riley, 80, of Medford, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 at the Arbor Place in Medford.

He was born March 19, 1925 at Anaheim, CA, the son of Ruth and Herbert Riley. He was a 1948 graduate of California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, CA, with a Agriculture major. On May 28, 1949 at Paso Robles, CA he married the former Polly Ann Carter, who survives.

He operated a poultry ranch for six years and worked for eight years as a regional sales manager for Kimber Farmers. Most recently he worked as a real estate broker. His hobbies include gardening, traveling, and reading.

Mr. Riley was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944 and the First United Methodist Church of Ashland. He was the president of the Fremont Boys Club from 1970 to 1973 and was the president of the Poultry Club in San Louis Obispo County. He served on the Fremont School Board for six years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, sons, Michael Lloyd Riley of Pleasanton, CA, Patrick Leroy Riley of Murrieta, CA, and Timothy Joe Riley of Talent; sister, LeRoyce Evelyn Riley Tunnell; five grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Elks Lodge, 255 East Main Street, Ashland, Oregon 97520 or to the Ashland First United Methodist Church, 165 North Main Street, Ashland, Oregon 97520.

Hugh Walker Houk

Hugh Walker Houk, 78, of Ashland, died September 24, 2005 at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland, from complications of a stroke. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Hugh was born May 7, 1927 in Hemet, CA to Leland and Elsie Houk. Upon graduating from Hemet High School in 1945, he joined the navy, serving for thirteen months. He married Dorothy Eggen in 1947 and attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA, studying ornamental horticulture. After college they returned to Hemet, and farmed with his father.

The family moved to Ashland in 1956 after purchasing a cattle ranch. After the ranch was sold in 1961, Hugh joined S. C. Jones & Sons Insurance Agency, until he retired.

Hugh enjoyed camping, water-skiing, and bird watching.

Survivors include his wife, Dody, of Ashland; daughters, Leslie McLain and husband Jim of Winchester Bay, Julie Barnett and husband Greg of Roseburg, Nancy Gaviglio and husband Jack of Ashland; six grandchildren, Molly, Dan and Kelly McLain, Nathan Barnett, Gus and Sam Gaviglio; a brother, Grady Houk of Sacramento, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Terry Houk.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ashland High School Athletics, c/o N. Gaviglio, P. O. Box 3524, Ashland, OR 97520.

Maurice Bryce Berg

The memorial service for Maurice "Maury" Berg will be held Saturday, October 1, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland, OR. Private interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, OR.

Mr. Berg, 81, of Ashland, died Wednesday (September 28, 2005) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Maury Berg was born on February 19, 1924, to Theodore and Flora Berg on a small farm in Wildrose, North Dakota, the last of seven children.

He joined the Navy after graduating from high school and fought in the Pacific during World War II.

Maury moved to San Diego following graduation from Oregon State College to pursue a career in engineering. He worked at the Naval Electronics Lab in Point Loma until retiring in 1979. Maury married Martha Phillips in 1964 and gained two daughters, Kathy and Jeannie. They went on many trips and camping expeditions. After retiring, Maury and Martha moved to Ashland, a place Maury had planned to move to since he first moved to San Diego in the early 1950s. They had many traveling experiences together before his health declined.

Maury is survived by his wife, Martha, of Ashland; his daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Richard Fletcher of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Jeannie and William Jacobsen of Los Gatos, California; and his
three grandchildren, Laurel Jacobsen, Bradley Jacobsen, and Breanna Fletcher; his niece Carolyn Koch; as well as many friends.
