Betty M. Ritzinger

Betty May Ritzinger, 68, of Ashland, died Wednesday (September 28, 2005) at the Skylark Enhanced Care Center, Ashland.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Patio Village in the recreation room at 233 Eva Way, Talent.

She was born May 21, 1937 in Ashland, Oregon, a daughter of Mabel and Harry Mackay. She had lived in the Rogue Valley all her life, primarily in Ashland and Phoenix.

Mrs. Ritzinger enjoyed camping, gardening, animals, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Large of Bristol, TN; two sons, Steven Ritzinger of Springfield, OR and Joseph Ritzinger of Medford, OR; four sisters, three brothers; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her former husband, Eugene (Bud) Ritzinger. She was preceded in death by one brother; and one son.

She was loved by everyone and will be dearly missed.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Walter S. "Bud" Starnes

The funeral for Walter S. "Bud" Starnes will be 1 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2005 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, OR.

Mr. Starnes, 85, of Ashland, died Saturday, October 1, 2003 at the Ashland Community Hospital. He was born December 13, 1919 in Riddle, Oregon, the son of Venita and James Starnes.

During World War II, Mr. Starnes served in the 321st Infantry division of the United States Army. On May 7, 1948, at Ashland, he married the former Norene A. Crosby, who survives.

Mr. Starnes was a long time resident of Ashland and was a truck driver for ONC Freight Lines for 20 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Bud enjoyed rock hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and outdoor activities.

Surviving. in addition to his wife, are: three sons, Michael (Juliette) Starnes of Ashland, Timothy (Rose) Starnes of Klamath Falls, OR and Kelly (Melanie) Starnes of Corvallis, OR; one brother, Fred Starnes of Idaho; three sisters, Margaret Mann of Petaluma, CA, Ferol McKenzie of Phoenix, OR, and Pat Schytte of Orlando, FL; and one granddaughter, Syrah Starnes of Corvallis. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memoiral contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Gertrude Birnbaum

Gertrude Birnbaum, 84, of Ashland, died Monday (October 3, 2005) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Letitia Amy Gipe-Rail

Letitia "Tish" Amy Rail, born in Tacoma, WA on March 4, 1952, passed away Sept. 25, 2005 of Eureka, CA.

Tish is survived by two sons, Reuben and Diego Rail; parents, Charles and Georgina Gipe of Medford; and brother, Mark Gipe of Vista, CA.

Tish attended Southern Oregon University and Portland State. She majored in journalism and is known for her poems.

Tish married Paul Burton Rail in 1980 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Ashland. Paul preceded her in death, dying in 1983.

Tish lived in Humboldt County, CA for more than 20 years and was active in AA and other social services. Over the years she had worked as a Director of Crossroads and Executive Director of Coastal Family Development Center.

Tish loved classic rock, spicy food, poetry, peanut butter, warm weather and sandy beaches, and was rarely found without headphones and sunglasses. She was well liked by people from all walks of life and will be remembered for her kindness, her enthusiasm and her quirky sense of humor.

There was a private memorial service to celebrate her life held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Arcata, CA September 28, 2005. Those who wish to do so may sign the guest book at www.times-stanard.com, click obits.

Donations in Tish's name can be made to the local Alcoholic's Anonymous group.

Rebecca Martin

A memorial service for Rebecca Martin will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Friends Church, 50 Talent Ave., Talent. Mrs. Martin, 85, of Phoenix, died October 5, 2005 at her home. She was born on Dec. 14, 1919 in Bend, OR to Richard and Esther Hunsley. She had lived nearly all her life in the Rogue Valley, the last 53 years in Phoenix.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Kimball of Central Point; two sons, James Martin of Entiat, WA, and Charles Martin of Pukekohe, Auckland, New Zealand; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loring Martin; four sisters; and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Cancer Research, or to the hurricane victims.

Alice V. Jones

Alice V. Jones died peacefully on September 29, 2005 at the age of 84. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the United Methodist Church in Ashland, with Rev. Michael Powell officiating.

Alice - also known as "AJ" - was born on April 27, 1921 in Kansas City, MO, moving to Southern California as a small child. She often spoke of her childhood as a loving family life filled with music, active church life, and an appreciation of nature. She graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles and Compton Jr. College, majoring in pre-nursing. She served as a nurse's aide at the Methodist Hospital of Los Angeles during WWII. She also worked as a dental assistant, an accountant for the phone company and, later in life worked as a supervisor for the Graphics dept. at USC.

Music was always a very important part of her life. She was an accomplished pianist and met her beloved husband, Cyril Jones, in the Inglewood Methodist choir. They were married on February 27, 1943. In addition to being a loving mother and wife, she was an avid gardener and accomplished seamstress. Throughout her life she remained active in all aspects of church and community life and will be dearly missed by all those that were fortunate to know her.

The family is deeply grieving her passing. She is survived by her brother, Kenneth Vaughn of Coeur d'Alene, ID; sister, Lola Van Wig of Huntington Beach, CA; son, Gary and spouse, Dottie Jones of Pinecliff, CO; daughter, Donna and spouse, Scott Woolsey of Ashland; her grandsons, Greg and spouse, Brandy Merwin of Laguna Beach, CA; Jason and spouse, Amy Merwin of Geneva, Switzerland; and K.C. Jones of Denver, CO.

Monetary donations can be made in her name to the Music Dept. of the United Methodist Church, 175 N Main St., Ashland 97520.
