John D. Murphy

John Davenport Murphy, 87, was born March 25, 1918 in Ashland, Oregon to Blanche Davenport and John Murray Murphy. He attended and graduated from Ashland Normal School. He later attended Southern Oregon State Normal School and the University of Oregon.

As a young boy, he enjoyed riding his horse and participating in the Ashland Roundups. He enjoyed Friday evenings at the Bellview Grange participating in a wide variety of activities.

John was a good athlete, lettering in basketball and baseball. He served in World War II in Germany as a sergeant 1st Class. He was employed by Fortmillers Department Store in Ashland, Cop-Co of Rogue River, Oregon and retired from the City of Ashland as a purchasing agent.

He was a 50 year member and Past Exalted Ruler of Lodge #944 A.F.& A.M. He enjoyed the game of golf and spending time outdoors, especially herding cattle with Jim Miller on the Murphy Ranch, the Greensprings, and Buck Prairie. He spent his last years as a daily frequenter to the Old Murphy Ranch site of the Murphy Historical Barn built in 1858 by his great-grandfather, John Jacob Murphy.

John is preceded in death by his sister Florence, a sister, Mary Louise, his father, John Murphy, and his mother, Blanche. He is survived by an only daughter, Dian L. Murphy of Madison, WI.

At his request, no services are planned. Cremation arrangements under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Mary Lois East

Mary Lois East passed away on November 11, 2005, in Medford, Oregon.

She was 90.

Born November 4, 1915 in Huntington, West Virginia to Myrtle Henderson East and Wyatt Crawford East, she lived most of her life in Southern California. Her life partner of 52 years, Nina VanSickel, preceded her in death, as did all of her siblings.

Lois is survived by nieces, Julia Holly East of Ashland, Mary D. East of Tampa, FL, and Lynn Hunter East of Naples, FL; and nephews, John Hunter East, Jr. of Naples, FL, and Robert Henderson East, Jr., of Irvine, KY. A memorial service will be held graveside in Orange, California at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice in her name.

Daniel Cody Mitchell

Daniel Cody Mitchell of Ashland, OR, passed away near his home on Saturday, November 12, 2005. Daniel was born on July 18, 1980 in Medford. While growing up in the Phoenix/ Talent area he was an avid sportsman, playing soccer and little league baseball. He was a skateboarder, skier and snowboarder.

He is survived by his mother, Dawna Powell of Phoenix; his father Michael Powell; his brother Jason Kizziah of Salem; his aunt, Peggy Medeiros of Bend; his aunt, Karla Brown of Central Point; and many friends in the Ashland, Talent and Phoenix areas.

There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix, 121 Second Street, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th with the Rev. Mike Foster officiating. The service is open to all friends and family. Memorials may be made to the church.

Helen "Betty" Evans Lyon

A funeral service for Helen "Betty" Evans Lyon will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at Buell Funeral Chapel, Eugene. A commital service will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Mrs. Lyon, 87, of Eugene (formerly of Ashland) died November 22, 2005.

She was born on May 3, 1918 in Morning Sun, Iowa to Charles and Bessie (Harris) Horne. When she was two years old, she moved with her family to Ashland. She graduated from Ashland High School, and received her teaching certificate from Southern Oregon Normal School.Mrs. Lyon taught second and third grades in Chiloquin, Henley and Klamath Falls.

Survivors include her daughters, Donna Buell and her husband, Gary of Lowell, OR, Carol Killingsworth and her husband, Bob of Denver, CO; a brother Deane Horne and his wife, Dorothy of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both her husbands; her brother, Paul Horne (1999) and her grandson, Brenden Brown (1981).

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, 1121 Fairfield, Eugene, OR 97402.

William Monning

Mr. William (Bill) Arthur Monning, age 74, passed away on November 23, 2005 at his home at 1680 Greenmeadows Way, Ashland, Oregon after a year long battle with colon cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Berniece Brewer Monning. They have 6 children (4 daughters) Velita, Michelle, Sherri, and Patricia, (2 sons) Kevin and Brent; 14 grandchildren with the 15th (grandson) due in February 2006; and 2 great grandchildren.

He was born on October 3, 1931 in San Jose, California and lived in the California Bay Area where he worked in the food service industry for 21 years. He served in the US Air Force from April 1951-May 1955. After retirement, he, his wife and son Brent purchased Advanced Photo and Imaging in Ashland (formerly Picture This), which they have owned for 14 years. He was very active in Ashland community organizations, volunteering for the Kiwanis, Elks, and faithfully attending the weekly Chamber of Commerce meetings as his health allowed.

He loved to read (especially Louis L'Amour westerns), watch John Wayne movies, go fishing and in his earlier years would go deer hunting.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to: Oncology of Southern Oregon, LLC, 748 State Street, Medford, OR 97504.

At his request, there will not be a funeral service. His wish was to have his ashes scattered with those of his favorite dog, TC. Please stop by the home on Greenmeadows Way to pay your respects and sign a remembrance book. A memorial service for the family and community will be held in the spring of 2006 at the Elks Lodge in Ashland, date tba. We wish to THANK the attending doctors and nurses, Home Care Services, Asante Hospice as well as the entire community for their love, support, and guidance during the difficult times. It was truly appreciated and the family feels blessed to have such an outpouring of concern and care.

Zena Goldberg

Zena Goldberg, 83, of Ashland, died Nov. 12, 2005 at Ashland Memorial Hospital. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Helma Gilbert

Helma Gilbert, 91, of Ashland, died November 15, 2005 at an Ashland foster home. Arrangements under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Debra Harrison

In loving memory

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Debra Harrison will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Mojo Rising, 140 Lithia Way, Ashland.

Debra was born on November 2, 1950 and died on November 25, 2005.

Debra was loved by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her.

She leaves behind many true friends. She will be missed by all, and never forgotten.

Ella M. Barry

Ella M. Barry age 88 of Medford died Sunday December 4, 2005 at The Orchards Assisted Living in Medford. Arrangements by Abbey Funeral.

Charles "Butch" Fred Hull

Charles F. Hull passed away on December 1, 2005 in Ashland, OR at the age of 64. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents.

Charles was born in Bellflower, CA on May 31, 1941 to Mary Kathryn Hull and Edwin Stanton Hull. He attended Long Beach Jordan High School in Long Beach, CA where he excelled in football and other team sports. He was an avid sports fan and followed professional, college, Ashland High School and South Medford High School athletic activities. His nephew, Corey O'Neill was an all-conference soccer and football player at South Medford High School and his niece, Alexi Butler participated in volleyball at Ashland High School.

Charles was a truck driver by profession and travelled all over the state of California before moving to Ashland in 2002. In retirement, he enjoyed his family, friends and gardening, as well as visiting Lake of the Woods where he enjoyed his family's cabin and chopping and splitting wood. He loved the outdoors and Oregon.

Charles is survived by his two daughters, Pilar Hull of Lakewood, CA and Mona Hull of Bellflower, CA; three grandchildren, Haley, Austin and Kennedy. A son, Daniel and granddaughter, Quincy, preceded him in death. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Butler of Ashland; his brothers, Roger Hull of Medford and Ron Hull of Camano Island, WA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Hospice, in care of Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98 Ashland, OR 97520. A celebration of his life will be held in July, 2006.
