Kenneth T. Darling

A memorial service for Kenneth T. Darling will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church of Ashland with the Rev. Michael Powell officiating. A private burial will be held by the family at the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland prior to the service.

Mr. Darling, 86, died Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Ashland Community Hospital in Ashland.

Mr. Darling was born on Dec. 6, 1914 in Oakland, Calif., to Carl Clough Darling and Cynthia Olive Tuttle.

He attended Ashland grade schools and graduated from high school in 1932. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Redlands and a master's degree from the University of Southern California.

On August 15, 1943 he was married to his first wife, Madge Borden in Santa Ana, Calif. She died in 1988 and on Oct. 21, 1991 he married Beverly J. Young (Moore), who survives.

He worked with the U.S. Employment Service in Los Angeles and San Diego. He taught school in the Garden Grove, Calif., area until 1966. He returned to Ashland and taught remedial reading and did psychological testing.

Mr. Darling was an expert checkers player, and loved hiking and golf. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Elks Lodge - both in Ashland.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of Ashland; a stepson, Ronald Moore; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by numerous nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to Camp Latgawa in care of the First Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, Ore. 97520.

Arrangements were made by the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Eddie Virgil Lunsford

Eddie Virgil Lunsford, 80, of Talent died Sunday, June 24, 2001 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. A reception will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Conger-Morris Funeral Home in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Lunsford was born on Jan. 30, 1921 to the late Robert E. and Nellie Belle (West) Lunsford in Douglas, Neb. He was one of 15 children.

He moved to the Rogue Valley 53 years ago from Yakima, Wash., where he had married the former Annabelle Shelly on July 24, 1944.

Mr. Lunsford owned and operated Ed's Motor Service in Talent. He was a member of the Talent City Council and the Rogue Valley Council of Government. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing country-western music.

Survivors include his wife, Annabelle Lunsford of Talent; two sons, Larry Lunsford of Rogue River, and Gerald Lunsford of Russellville, Ark.; one daughter, Annette Jones of Priest River, Idaho; three brothers, Leland Lunsford of Oregon, Reaford Lunsford of Kennewick, Wash., and Dick Lunsford of Brownsville, Ore.; one sister, Vanora Smith of Sweet Home; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Arrangements are by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors in Medford.

Marvin D. Coffey

Marvin D. Coffey, 71, of Medford, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at Hearthstone Manor, Medford.

Arrangements are in the care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Annabelle Markham

Annabelle Markham, 82, of Ashland, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at Ashland Community Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Leo Butcher

Mr. Leo Butcher, 79, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at his home in Jacksonville, Ore. Private memorial services will be held for Mr. Leo Butcher at 11 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2001 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore. Father David Schiferl and Bishop Thomas LaPoint will be officiating.

Leo Butcher was born April 23, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Isaac Butcher and Mary Kinney Butcher. On May 1, 1970, in Norwalk, Calif., he married Joan Peiffer who survives at their home.

He went to schools in Alhambra, Calif., and graduated from the Alhambra High School. He retired in 1993 as a carpenter and builder in the valley. Leo was in the Army Air Force and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, seven children, Kathy Radford, Suzanne Haveman, Thomas LaPoint, Michael LaPoint, Gregory LaPoint, Edward LaPoint, Steven Butcher, 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.

Avis Marian Kohal

Avis Marian Kohal, 80, of Talent, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. A memorial service was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2001 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland, with Pastor Tony Schultz officiating. Inurnment will be in Mayville, N.D.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, Ore. 97501.

Avis was born December 17, 1920 in Mayville, N.D., to Henri and Hanah Wenaas. She married Donald Kohal August 1, 1972 in Reno, Nev. She moved to Coos Bay area in Oregon in 1948 from North Dakota. In 1975, she moved to the Rogue Valley.

She enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Ashland.

Survivors include her husband Donald Kohal of Talent; a son, David Enge of Albany, Ore.; a step-son, Alan Kohal of Pinehurst, Idaho; four brothers, Steve Wenaas of Carrington, N.D., Donald Wenaas of Jamestown, N.D., Harold Wenaas of Great Falls, Mont., and Charles Wenaas of Mayville, N.D.; two sisters, Beverly Sorenson of Jolliet, Ill., and Helen Fay Wenaas of Mayville, N.D.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Lt. Col. Gorden Wenaas, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969.

Arrangements are under the direction of Abbey Funeral in Medford.

Merritt Randles

Merritt Randles, 101, formerly of Ashland and Phoenix, died Monday, July 23, 2001 at a nursing home in Brookings. No services are planned.

Doris `Dee' Stephens

The memorial service for "Dee" Stephens will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2001 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. The Rev. Anthony Schultz of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate. The crypt-side service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001 at the Roseburg Memorial Gardens in Roseburg.

Those who wish may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to ACCESS, Inc., Nutrition Dept. at P.O. Box 4666, Medford. 97501.

"Dee" Stephens, 76, of Ashland, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

Mrs. Stephens was born July 24, 1924 in Mazeppa, Minn., to William A. Rietmann and the former Mildred L. Stoddard. She married Tyrus Raymond Stephens January 28, 1945 in Roseburg. He preceded her in death on August 24, 1991.

Mrs. Stephens was a life member of O.E.S. Chapter 91, Oakland, Ore. She enjoyed bowling, bird watching, and her yard. She lived in Ashland since 1956.

Survivors include her son, Robert Stephens of Ashland; her daughter, Lonelle Stephens of Ashland; her brother, William Rietmann of Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.
