Jenneva May Newton

Funeral services for Jenneva May Newton will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Chapel in Ashland. Rev. Shawn Jones will officiate.

Mrs. Newton died Friday at her home in Ashland. She was 84.

She was born Jenneva May Wood in Kirksville, Mo., in 1917. She graduated from Livingston High School in Livingston, Calif. in 1935. On Aug. 14, 1942, she married Dr. George C. Newton, who practiced medicine in Ashland for 38 years until he died in 1988.

Mrs. Newton was an active person who enjoyed her family, traveling and working in her yard.

She is survived by two daughters Kay Underwood, of Central Point, and Jan Peeno, of Spokane, Wash., her sister Kathleen Jones of Roseburg and four grandchildren.

Violet English

Ms. Violet English, 92, of Ashland died Wed., Dec., 19, 2001 at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.

Suzanne Garrette Clark

Ms. Suzanne Garrette Clark, 64, of Oakland, Calif., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 in Berkeley, Calif. Family services were held in Ms. Clark's home town of Colusa, Calif.

She was born April 22, 1937 in Colusa, Calif. At the University of California, Berkeley, she was a member of the Alpha Phi Chapter. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley and worked for the university's Farm Extension Program for many years. She was also a published freelance author.

Survivors include her mother Inez Vedo Garrette; her sister Edwina Garrette of Ashland; her daughter Garrette Clark-Gould of Paris, France; her son James Henry Clark IV of Chico, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Lea and Erica Gould. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin C. Garrette.

Helen J. Bell

Helen J. Bell, 94, of Central Point and formerly of Ashland, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001 at her home. Private cremation services have been held.

Mrs. Bell was born Dec. 5, 1907 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to George and Clara (Aitken) Matthews. On Oct. 30, 1926 at Ridgefield Park, N.Y., she married Donald L. Bell, who preceded her in death in 1970. In 1988 she moved to Ashland from El Segundo, Calif., where she was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her daughter Joan Hedges of Ashland; son Jim Bell of San Ramon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sons, Robert and Loyd, preceded her in death.

Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.

Floyd Field Smith

Floyd Field Smith, 89, of Grants Pass died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at River Valley Community Church with Pastors Walt Ferris and Ernie Yaconelli officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. A gathering for friends and family will be held afterward at River Valley Community Church to share food and stories.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Rescue Mission Building Fund, 120 SE J St., Grants Pass, Ore. 97626.

Mr. Smith was born March 15, 1912 in Grants Pass on the site where Southern Oregon State Bank was built. He lived all of his life in Grants Pass and was consistently involved in community activities. His grandfather Harry Smith, who was a pioneer in Ashland in the late 1860s, sold his blacksmith and livery business there to move his family to Grants Pass in 1883. On Nov. 8, 1936 Floyd married the former Merna Adeline Morgan, who preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 1996.

Mr. Smith was a former Williams school board member and ran Smith Bros. Lumber Company along with his uncle Amos. In 1946, they sold the mill and moved to Murphy, where Floyd operated a dairy of 120 registered Holsteins for nearly 30 years. After the sale of his ranch in Murphy, he developed Christel Heights, a 22-lot subdivision in the Murphy/Provolt area, after which, he moved to Grants Pass.

He was on the Josephine County Planning Commission for 20 years and was chairman for five years. He had been an active member of the Golden Eagles Kiwanis Club for many years, earning numerous service awards and perfect attendance pins. He was a strong supporter of Meals on Wheels and drove a daily route delivering meals for 15 years.

Survivors include his daughter Janet Stout and her husband Lee of Bellevue, Wash.; his son Duane Smith of Ashland; four grandchildren, Mark Stout of Arlington, Va., Megan Stout of Bellevue, Wash.; Traci Thompson of Phoenix, Ore.; and Christi Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; two great grandchildren, Darian and Drew Thompson; and his companion of the last few years, Audrey Parks.

Arrangements are in care of Hull and Hull Funeral Directors in Grants Pass.

Mildred May Reid

Mildred May Reid, 89, of Ashland died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001 at the Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. No service has been planned.

Mrs. Reid was born Feb. 7, 1912 to James and Marie Corbett in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. She moved to the U.S. in 1923 and married Henry Reid in New Canaan, Conn., in 1950. Mrs. Reid worked as a hospital nursery attendant.

Survivors include a step-son Alex Reid of Ashland and a cousin, Marjorie Carol of Modesto, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Arrangements are in care of Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford.

Donald Josiah Hayden

Donald Josiah Hayden, 78, of Florence and formerly of Ashland, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 of heart failure. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw in Florence. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Don Hayden Memorial Fund at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3996 Hwy. 101 N., Florence, Ore. 97439.

He was born May 6, 1923 in Fitchburg, Mass., to Armond and Lillian Hayden. On Oct. 16, 1948 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he married Judy, who survives. The family resided in La Crescenta, Calif., and Hayward, Calif., before moving to Florence in 1996. He lived in Ashland and played in various bands between 1992 and 1994.

Survivors include his wife Judy; two daughters, Sharon Hayden of Gresham, Ore., and Dale Lysne and her husband David of Corvallis, Ore.; two granddaughters, Kari and Erin Lysne; and a brother David of Orange Park, Fla.

Arrangements are in care of Florence Funeral Home in Florence.

Dorothy Marie Ziemer

Funeral services for Dorothy Marie Ziemer will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 1395 Arnold Lane in Medford.

Ziemer died at her residence in Ashland Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at the age of 85, after living in the Rogue Valley for 26 years. Her Husband John Ziemer preceded her in death in 1996.

Ziemer was born Dorothy Curler in Lake Hubert, Minn. She married John Ziemer in 1945. She lived in Phoenix for 20 years before moving to Ashland. She and her husband lived overseas for many years while John Ziemer worked in construction.

She was an artist who enjoyed painting and creating black-and-white sketches. Ziemer was also a member of the Garden Club in Talent.

Ziemer is survived by sister Marian Cleveland of Arkansas.

Minister Stan Johnson of West Main Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mary Ellen Elam

Mary Ellen Elam, 66, of Talent, died Friday, July 21, 2000 at her home. Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
