Michael Jon Summers, 60, of Ashland, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Linda Vista Center, Ashland.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Gladys L. Schaul

Gladys L. Schaul, 90, of Medford, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at a Medford foster home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory Center, Ashland.

Jeffrey David Ellis

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jeffrey David Ellis will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mel's Catholic Church, 4745 Pennsylvania Ave., Fair Oaks, Calif.

Mr. Ellis, 23, of Ashland, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in a kayaking accident in the Shackleford Falls area near Fort Jones, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Outward Bound West, Jeff Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund, 910 Jackson St., Golden, CO 80401.

He was born Jan. 14, 1980, in Sacramento, Calif., to Jim and Irene Ellis. Members of his family were pioneers of Siskiyou County, and his great-grandfather was the chief of police in Yreka, Calif., for 44 years. He was raised in the Sacramento and Santa Cruz areas.

He attended Bella Vista High School and graduated from Del Campo High School in 1998. He was an all-league football and baseball player during his high school years and an All-Northern California football player at American River College, where he received an associate's degree.

He moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago to attend Southern Oregon University and explore the local rivers.

Mr. Ellis was an accomplished kayaker who went from a beginner to a certified instructor, kayaking with experts, in three years time. He also won two kayaking competitions.

He enjoyed people, kayaking and his dogs, Buddy, Copey and Elvis.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Irene Ellis, Carmichael, Calif.; and a brother, Jim Jr., Carmichael, Calif.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka, Calif.

Susan Dunn Edwards

A celebration of the life of Susan Dunn Edwards will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, Siskiyou Boulevard and Walker Avenue. The Rev. Scott Dalgarno will officiate.

Miss Edwards, 44, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, of stomach cancer at KC's Adult Family Care center in Medford, under the care of Providence Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to Living Opportunities, P.O. Box 1105, Medford, OR. 97501.

Miss Edwards was born July 15, 1958, a daughter of Robert and Charleen Edwards of Ashland.

She lived in the Edwards Street group home run by Living Opportunities and was employed at the Medford store operated by Goodwill of Southern Oregon.

Survivors include her parents; three brothers, David, Claremont, Calif., Duncan, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Steven, Salinas, Calif.; and a sister, Eileen Edwards Denne, Alexandria, Va.

Gladys L. Schaul

The funeral for Gladys L. Schaul will be 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Interment will be at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.

Mrs. Schaul, 90, of Ashland, died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at a Medford Foster Home. She was born June 1, 1912 at Los Angeles, Calif. the daughter of Jennie and Walter Davis and was attended schools in the Los Angeles area.

She was married to Russell L. Whitaker and following their divorced married Kenneth Schaul. Due to ill health, she moved to Ashland in 1996 to be near her son. Mrs. Schaul enjoyed sewing, gardening, and traveling.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Schaul currently living in the Los Angeles area; her son Russell Whitaker of Ashland; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son and one brother.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Henriette Jeanne Picaud

Henriette Jeanne Picaud, 95, of Ashland, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at a local foster home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2003 at Jacksonville Cemetery, Jacksonville.

Memorial contributions can be made to Salvation Army, 922 N. Central Ave. Medford, OR 97501.

She was born May 16, 1907 in Williamsbridge, NY, to Joseph and Julie (Labourie) Picaud. She moved from New York to the Rogue Valley in 1947 and have been living here since.

She owned and operated the Sheep Ranch and Garden Nursery in Medford for 23 years. Her interests include Ham Radio and gardening. She was member of the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Commission, Jackson County Forest Advisory Council, Applegate Garden Club and Rogue Valley Amateur Radio Club.

She was survived by the Offenbacher Family. She was preceded in death by her bother, George.

The Perl Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. Tussing

Richard C. Tussing, 69, part-time resident of Ashland, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Richard C. Tussing to National Kidney Foundation of Oregon and Washington, Regional - S. Oregon, 33 North Central Ave. #428, Medford, OR 97501-5939.

Mr. Tussing was born June 18, 1934 in Capac, Mich. He was a husband, father, brother and a friend.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Wayne Richard Paulsen

The memorial service for Wayne Richard Paulsen will be at noon Monday, May 26, 2003, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Ashland. The Rev. Doug Spence will officiate.

Mr. Paulsen, 69, of Ashland, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Memorial Garden Fund, 44 N. Second St., Ashland, OR 97520; or P.E.O. Foundation, Tina Wallis Scholarship Fund, c/o Joan Whitsett, 858 Cypress Point Loop, Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born May 21, 1933, in Davenport, Iowa, to Carl Peter and Elnora Mae Paulsen. He grew up in Hornbrook, Calif., and was the first Eagle Scout in Siskiyou County. He graduated from Yreka High School in 1951, where he was a 16-letter athlete.

After high school, Mr. Paulsen was drafted by the St. Louis Browns baseball team. He then enlisted in the Navy and played baseball for the Navy's Blue Jackets team in San Diego before shipping out on a destroyer near the end of the Korean War. After his discharge, he played baseball for the Baltimore Orioles.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956. On Sept. 8, 1957, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, he married Judy Farrar, who survives.

He graduated from what is now Southern Oregon University in 1959, and was listed in the 1959 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." He received a master's degree in education in 1964.

Mr. Paulsen began his teaching and coaching career in Ashland in 1960, and taught at Ashland Junior High, now known as Ashland Middle School. He started the baseball program at Ashland Junior High, the Summer Baseball Program in Ashland, and initiated and advised the National Junior Honor Society at Ashland Junior High.

After his retirement he was a volunteer police officer in Ashland, and enjoyed coaching at Walker and Helman Elementary Schools until last spring.

Mr. Paulsen was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, with three terms on the Vestry and served as a Stephen Minister, a lay person trained to provide Christian support to those in need. He was a member and former head of the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch and Commandery. He was a lifetime member and emeritus board member of the Southern Oregon University Alumni Association. He was president of the Siskiyou Knife and Fork Club and of the Ashland Education Association. He was a member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Siskiyou County Historical Society.

He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed fishing with friends and traveling with his wife and family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Julie Paulsen, Seattle; a son, Jim, Puyallup, Wash.; two brothers, Bill, Oroville, Calif., and Carl, Redding, Calif.; a sister, Jaci Cogdill, Valdosta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.
