Mary Eleanor Herbold

Mary Eleanor Herbold died Thursday (May 8, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center.

Interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress, Calif.

Mrs. Herbold was born June 1, 1923, at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Charles and Jane Merriam. She was married to her first husband,

Alfred Murray, for 50 years. In 1997, she married Ralph A. Herbold and moved to Ashland.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Jeanie Camille Thompson, Gastonia, N.C.; a son, John Robert Murray, Sallisaw, Okla.; a step-daughter, Janet Kay Dunlap, Ashland; four brothers, Franklin, Harold, Essex and James; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Eleanor Baughman

Eleanor Baughman, 90, died Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born in Fredrick, Md. On Nov. 19, 1912. In 1935, she married Merrell (Pete) Baughman, who preceded her in death in 1970. She was a graduate of Hood College in Maryland and worked as an auditor for Prudential Insurance. She traveled the west in her work and, after her retirement, traveled extensively in Europe., Asia and Africa. Until recent years, she attended the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament each July. She lived in Honolulu, San Francisco and Los Angeles before moving to the Rogue Valley in 1998, and is survived by her son Michael, daughter-in-law Hilde, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren, all of Ashland. Her memorial service will be private.

Jessie M. Severance

Jessie M. Severance, 84, of Ashland died Monday, May 12, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Alexander M. Stepahin

Services will be announced later for Alexander M. Stepahin, who died Friday May 9, 2003 at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 2860 State St., Medford, Ore. 97504.

Mr. Stepahin was born March 29, 1916, at Drobot, Saskatchewan, Canada. On April 16, 1942, in Lyndora, Pa., he married Mary Soley, who died in 1987.

He retired from a career as a steel worker in 1970. He enjoyed art and photography.

He is survived by two daughters, Chris Larson, Lookout, Calif., and Regina Stepahin, Ashland; a son John, Klamath Falls; four brothers, Henry, Butler, Pa., George, Spotsylvania, Va., John, Pittsburgh, and Nick, North Olmstead, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Walter and sisters Alexandria and Elizabeth.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Gaylord William Smith

Gaylord William Smith, 77, of Ashland, died Monday, May 12, 2003 in the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Arrangements will be handled by Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford.

Barbara Jane Johnson

Barbara Jane Johnson, 77, of Ashland, died Monday, May 12, 2003 at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Gaylord Wm. 'Snuffy' Smith

Gaylord Wm. "Snuffy" Smith, 77, of Ashland, died Monday, May 12, 2003 at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith/Silver Scholarship Fund, c/o Ashland High School, 201 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland, Ore. 97520.

He was born March 1, 1926, in Grants Pass, to Gaylord W. and Edna E. (Trimble) Smith. He was raised in Grants Pass and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1944. On Sept. 7, 1947, in Grants Pass, he married Patricia J. Smith, who survives.

He earned a teaching degree in 1950 from what is now Southern Oregon University, where he played on Far West League Championship football teams from 1946 to 1948. He received a master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1954.

Mr. Smith began teaching for Ashland School District in 1950, and was principal of Ashland High School from 1957 until his retirement in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Rotary Club and Elks Lodge No. 944, both in Ashland. He was inducted into the Southern Oregon University Hall of Fame in 1995.

He was an avid golfer and billiards player.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Jane Claussen, Phoenix; three sons, Michael G., Talent, and William A. and Patrick M., both Springfield; two brothers, Richard, Foster City, Calif., and Raymond, Castro Valley, Calif.; a sister, JoAnne Marshall, Drewsey; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Bernice G. DeBoer

Bernice G. DeBoer, 92, formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday, May13, 2003, at the home of her eldest daughter Nancy Barr in Spokane, Wash. Her health declined after a stroke in 2001.

Graveside services will be held at Comstock Cemetery in Curtin, Ore., at noon Sunday , May 18, 2003. Smith-Lund-Mills funeral chapel in Cottage Grove is handling arrangements. Her parents Albert and Flora Holt filed a homestead on the newly opened Standing Rock Indian Reservation in 1910. She was born the following spring, the first Caucasian child born in Firesteel Township, S.D. She and her family moved to Oregon in 1936 following her marriage to Walter DeBoer in 1935, who was then serving in the Navy. She worked in the family store and post office in Curtin before moving with her husband to Ashland in 1945, living in Lithia park campground until housing was found. They started Walt's Lithia Motors in 1946, the beginning of what is currently Lithia Motors, one of the largest automotive retailers in the United States.

Mrs. DeBoer enjoyed her family, baking her famous cinnamon rolls, being a caregiver, and her faith.

Her husband, Walter who died in 1968, sisters Grace Goins, Flora Payne, brothers Harry and Philip Holt, preceded her in death. Sister Dorothy Booher of Winchester Bay survives her. Survivors include her six children - daughter and husband Nancy and Charles Barr of Spokane, Wash.; daughter and husband Phyllis and John Hirons, Eugene; son and wife Sidney and Karen DeBoer, Ashland; son and wife Robert and Rebecca DeBoer, Tampa, Fla.; daughter Janice DeBoer (Jessy Jordan) Ashland; son and wife Alan and Rebecca DeBoer, Ashland; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Meals on Wheels, 550 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, Ore., 97520, or Holt International Children Services, P.O. Box 2880. Eugene, Ore., 97402, which was founded by her brother, Harry Holt.

Barbara J. Johnson

Barbara J. Johnson, 77, of Ashland, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walter Johnson Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bill Johnson, P.O. Box 701, Fall River Mills, Calif. 96028.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn., a daughter of Lewis J. and Birdie (Eaton) Johnson. On June 28, 1947, in Berkeley, Calif., she married Walter Johnson, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Johnson attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She enjoyed music (piano), cooking, arts and crafts and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Steve, Ashland, and Bill, Fall River Mills, Calif.; a brother, Dick Johnson, Concord, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
