Ruth Catherine Johnson

Ruth Catherine Johnson, 84, of Ashland, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at her Ashland residence. A private family memorial service will be held.

Ruth was born Sept. 18, 1918 in New York, N.Y. She lived in the Rogue Valley for four years, moving from Los Angeles. She worked in the film industry in Los Angeles for Technicolor. She retired. She enjoyed singing, acting with an improv group and playing bridge.

Survivors include daughter, Cathy Schleining and son-in-law John of Ashland; two grandchildren, Lara and Eran of Ashland. She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Guste Amelia Galliher

Guste Amelia Galliher, 90, of Ashland, died March 16, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, at Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland. Pastor Tony Schultz of Grave Lutheran Church officiates.

Guste Amelia Galliher was born Oct.. 10, 1912 in Rock County, Minn., daughter of Arnie and Gertie Fresvik. On Sept. 15, 1937 in Sioux Falls, S.D., she married the late David Isaac Galliher. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Springfield, Ore. ten years ago.

Guste was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland. Her hobbies include knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Robinson of Williams, Ore., Sharon Galliher of Eugene, Ore. and Janice Faye Wainwright of Port Orford; five sons, David A. Galliher of Louisville, Texas, Gerald Galliher of New Zealand, Steven Ronald Galliher of San Francisco, Calif., Jason Carter Galliher of San Francisco, Calif. and Terry Lee Galliher of Lincoln City, Ore.; ten grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David in 1986, two daughters and one son.

Visitation is available at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Edith M. Kekuna

Edith M. Kekuna, 69, formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the Rogue Valley Medical Center. She had been a patient of the Black Oak Manor for the past seven years. At her request no services will be held. Memorial contributions can be made to Lion's Eye Bank or American Heath Association.

Edith was born Oct. 7, 1933 in Ashland, daughter of Vena S. and Oren Jesse Hile of "New England Heritage". She lived in the Rogue Valley her whole life.

She spent three years in the Panama Canal Zone where she received Nurse's Training. She worked as a home health care giver. She attended S.O.S. University majoring in music and the arts. She participated in Shakespeare, the City Band and the Symphony.

Survivors include son, Steven A. Kekuna of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Denise Kekuna and Debra Chunn, both of Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandsons; brothers, Hugh O. Hile of Medford and Frank B. Hile of Florida; two sisters, Clover M. McMillan of Prospect and Ione Parman of Crescent City, Calif.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Inez M. Norman

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Inez Mildred Norman, 98, of Talent, who died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at home.

She was born Oct. 23, 1904 in Monitor, Ore., the daughter of Anna and William Livingston. She was raised in Canby, Ore. and attended the Mt. Angel Normal School in Silverton, Ore.

On July 3, 1926 in Woodburn, Ore. she married William Jennings Norman who preceded her in death. She lived in Mollala, Carlton, and the Oregon Coast before moving to Santa Cruz in 1971.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1990 where she was a member of the Clay Street Community Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Inez Orndoff of Talent; one sister, Valda Miller of Hermiston, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and numerous great and great great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Clay Street Community Church, 631 Clay Street, Ashland, Ore. 97520.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Gilbert L. Burton

Gilbert L. Burton, 85, of Ashland, died at Linda Vista Care Center on Friday, March 21, 2003.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives & Crematory.

Doris Ekelman-Holland

Doris Ekelman-Holland, 71, of Trail, died at her home in Trail on Friday, March 21.

Wilma V. "Peggy" Bridges

Wilma V. "Peggy" Bridges, 83, of Talent, died Saturday, at home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center located in Ashland.

Dorothy Ellen Smith-Saunders

Dorothy Ellen Smith-Saunders, 89, formerly of Ashland, died today at her residence in Medford.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory located in Ashland.

Gilbert Leonard Burton

Gilbert Leonard Burton, born on Feb. 9, 1918, beloved husband for 55 years of Alice and father of Charles Burton of Steilacoom, Wash., Guy and Neil Burton of Portland, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Burton was an advertising executive in San Francisco for 20 years.

A lifelong sports enthusiast and lover of politics, Mr. Burton was especially proud of his professional involvement in the 1960 presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy during which he interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Belafonte for campaign advertisements.

Mr. Burton served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in North Africa, Italy and Germany. He entered the service as a private first class and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant.

After his retirement, the Burtons enjoyed traveling - at one point camping for two years in a Volkswagen bus. They visited Central and South America and Europe. The Burtons moved to Ashland in 1980 where Mr. Burton was an advocate for seniors and an avid bridge player.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and granddaughter Marisol.

At Mr. Burton's request, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory located in Medford.

Ruth Evelyn Dunn

Ruth Evelyn Dunn, 88, of Medford, died at home Sunday, March 23, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at the Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Born Jan. 23, 1915 to Albert and Zella (Harmon) Hanscam of Medford, Mrs. Dunn graduated from Medford High School in 1931 before attending Southern Oregon Normal School, where she graduated in 1935. In 1955 she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Southern Oregon College.

She was a school teacher for the Central Point and Medford school districts, retiring in 1978 after 32 years of teaching. She was also a former employee at the Ashland Daily Tidings.

Mrs. Dunn enjoyed family, friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking - especially baking cookies - and sewing and knitting. She was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Medford where she served as a deacon and an elder. She was also a member of the YMCA for 20 years. She held professional memberships in the National Education Association, Oregon Education Association and Oregon Retired Educators Association.

Mrs. Dunn married Fred William Dunn on Sept. 30, 1936 who preceded her in death along with her son, David William Dunn and her brother, Glenn Hanscam.

She is survived by two daughters, two sisters, one brother, five granddaughters and seven great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, Ore., 97504, or the First Presbyterian Church, Youth Fund, 85 S. Holly St., Medford, Ore. 97501.
