Alan Irvin Davis
Alan Irvin Davis, of Ashland, Oregon died suddenly Sunday, October 17, 2004 in San Francisco. He was 48 years old.

Alan was born to Paul Alan Davis and Mary Louise (Viox) Davis on May 18, 1956 in Castro Valley, CA. After a short stay in Dunsmuir, the family relocated to Willits in 1961, where he attended school until his graduation from Willits High School in 1974. Alan was an accomplished athlete, playing basketball, baseball, and football. He was also co-editor of his high school paper (The Wolverine) and student body vice president his senior year. Alan attended the University of Nevada Reno and Mendocino Community College before settling in Chico, where he graduated from Chico State University (political science) in 1979.

While in college, Alan began a longtime career in the restaurant business. He was a chef until 2003, most recently at Omar's in Ashland. He had been working for Ocean Beauty since that time and until his death.

Alan met Theodore Ortiz in January 1980, and their relationship lasted 24 years. Ortiz died on June 8, 2004, in the couple's Ashland home. The couple had a daughter, Patti, and two granddaughters. Alan was also predeceased by his father; and his grandparents Irvin and Elizabeth (Petersen) Viox, and Arthur and Anne (Canty) Davis.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Davis, of McKinleyville, CA, his sister, Anne Davis Gervan and brother, Jack Davis, both of Eureka, CA., his brother Rev. Stuart Davis of Dawson, NE., nephews, Calen Davis, Chris Davis, Alex Wissman, Edward Davis, his niece Megan Davis, brother-in-law David Gervan, and several cousins and an uncle.

Many will remember Alan for his love of the University of California Golden Bears, his tennis game, his sensitivity, his smile and his trust in the goodness of humankind. He was tireless in his work for the DARE program and encouraged others to be accepting of their own "prodigal sons." Go with God Big Al, and GO BEARS!

Family and friends are invited to memorial services at 1 p.m. on Saturday October 30, at First Presbyterian Church in Ashland, OR.

Memorial contributions in Alan's name may be made to any local DARE program or to any charity which helps children.

Keith W. Garrett
Keith W. Garrett, 70, of Ashland, Oregon, passed away October 26, 2004 at Farmington Square. He was born February 24, 1934 in Summerton Arizona to Jim and Lela Garrett. Keith and his family moved to Oregon in 1948 where he attended Ashland Schools. He married Gerrie Lauridsen February 14, 1956.

He earned a B. S. Degree at Southern Oregon College in 1961. He earned a M.A. Degree in 1964 at Ohio State University. Keith retired form teaching at Ashland High School. He was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge, Ashland Masonic Lodges, and Hillah Temple Shrine.

Keith will be greatly missed by his loving family; his wife and three children, Kim Souza of Medford, Jody Williams of Medford, and Kurt Garrett of Carson City Nevada, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Pat Garrett.

A visitation will be held today, October 28 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 29 2004 at Litwiller-Simonsen Chapel. A memorial service will follow at the Ashland Elks Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Childrens Advocacy Center of Medford or the Ashland High School Scholarship Fund.

James A. Linkogle
James A. Linkogle of Ashland, Oregon died Saturday, October 23, 2004, at the age of 71. Jim died of liver failure and was lovingly nursed through his illness by his wife Joan and in the final stages by his son Paul.

Although a native Californian, he lived in Ashland for over fifteen years. His move to Oregon with wife Joan and younger son James was planned and eagerly anticipated for many years.

Jim was born in Bell, California in 1933, one of six siblings. He lived in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles during most of his childhood and returned there as an adult to raise his family. His widowed mother Dorothy worked tirelessly to support her family during the depression. His early experiences of poverty gave him a sense of understanding and compassion for others.

Jim received a BA in history from Loyal Marymount University. In addition, he was awarded a Bachelors of Philosophy from Saint Albert's (Berkeley).

He had a varied work history. Jim was a staff sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a weather balloon operator, working all over the United States including the Nevada test site. He entered the Dominican seminary in 1959 to train for the priesthood. Realizing that this was not the life for him he left and eventually met and married Joan. He worked for the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office for over 20 years before retiring to Ashland.

Jim was an active parishioner of our Lady of the Mountain Church. He was also involved in the local chapters of the Labor Party and the Alliance for Democracy. He participated in the Seattle World Trade Organization protests in 1999. A multi-faceted person, Jim was as comfortable working outdoors as he was with intellectual pursuits. He undertook many ambitious home improvement projects, including single-handedly replacing a large swimming pool with a lush garden.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of forty years; and his children Stephanie, Paul, Maria and James; two granddaughters; and two grandsons; and siblings, Mary, Catherine and Joe.

There will be a rosary at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. The funeral will be at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, on Thursday, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a reception. Graveside service will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the St. Vincent De Paul Building Fund in Medford.

Keith W. Garrett
Keith W. Garrett, 70, of Ashland, died Tuesday (October 26, 2004) at Farmington Square, Medford.

A visitation will be held October 28, from 5 to 8 p,m. at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., October 29, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Irvin R. Dyer
Irvin R. Dyer, 100. of Ashland, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 2004) at his home. Arrangements; Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Hugh William Donovan
Hugh William Donovan died September 19th, 2004. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Donovan at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 23, at Fountain Plaza, Medford, Pastor Perry Atkinson will officiate.

Hugh was born May 20, 1924 in Reno, Nevada. He moved to and grew up in Santa Clara, California where he graduated from Santa Clara University cum laude in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He served in the army during WW II and retired as Lt. Col. Following his retirement from active military duty, he was employed for 28 years by G.E. in San Jose in the Atomic Power Equipment Department. In 1963 he was selected national chairman of the Nuclear Material Management where he was the top executive officer responsible for control of all nuclear materials across the U.S.

In 1994 Hugh moved to Medford. He was a true gentleman who extremely proud of his military service and years of employment with G.E. He contributed to many non-profit organizations that he felt worthy.

He was an accomplished musician, and in his youth played in many bands, playing both the saxophone and piano.

Survivors include; his sister, Sister Leonard Donovan of San Jose, CA; his three daughters, Blanca Hall-Pinner of Danville, CA. Rita Donovan-Roth of Ashland, and Teena Estafani of San Jose; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America or the Sisters of the Holy Family, Fremont CA.

Jack Ronald Gunter
Jack Ronald Gunter passed away on September 23, 2004 in Ashland, Oregon at the age of 78.

A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. at the Bellview Grange in Ashland on Monday, October 25, 2004.

He was born to Gerald Gunter and Hazel Gunter (Powell) on October 25, 1925 in Ashland, Oregon. He married Jean Pander in 1945 who preceded him in death in 1956. He married Betty Bushnell on November 11, 1957 who survives.

Mr. Gunter was born and raised in Ashland. He served in the Navy in WWII. He worked in the timber industries in his younger years, as well as commercial fishing. He was a firefighter for Jackson County Fire District #5 for 19 years, retiring in 1989.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; One daughter Marietta Bianchi who lives in Sholow AZ; three sons, Gerald "Butch" Gunter, Steven Gunter, and Dan Gunter, all of Ashland. Six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, James Gunter.

The family would appreciate donations to Jackson County Fire District #5 in memory of Jack Gunter. Contributions can be mailed to JCFD #5, 5811 South Pacific Hwy., Phoenix, OR 97535.

Kurt Hartmann
A private family service will be held for Kurt Hartmann, 78, of Ashland who died Friday, October 15, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in 1926 in Passau, Germany, Kurt Hartmann came to the United States in 1938, when his family fled the Hitler regime. He lived in Albany, New York until 1944 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Philippines until 1946.

Mr. Hartman attended Antioch College in Yellowsprings, Ohio and graduated from that institution with a degree in political science.

In his younger years he worked for the National Labor Relations Board in North Carolina and Philadelphia. Subsequently, he became a journalist in West Virginia and Washington D.C. In 1955 he assumed ownership of the weekly newspaper in Seaside, CA, the News-Sentinel, and several years later founded a printing business, Printing Inc. In 1978, together with his wife, Kurt established a bookstore in Salinas, Books & Books.

Since his retirement in 1989 he had returned to journalism, writing, among other publications, for the Monterey Herald's Alta Vista magazine, the Ashland Daily Tidings, and the Medford Mail Tribune.

Kurt and Lou moved from the Monterey Peninsula to Ashland, Oregon in 2000 after each had lived in California for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, and two children by a prior marriage, Susan Gernaey of Rossmoor, CA, Thomas Mark Hartmann of Los Angeles, CA, and four grandchildren.
