Martina Elguézabal vda. de Rosales

Sept. 11, 1920 - Nov. 13, 2010

Nyssa - Martina Elguézabal vda. de Rosales, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and wife passed away Saturday at St. Alfonsus Medical Center.

She was 90 years old. She was born Sept. 11, 1920, to Blas and Carmen Elguézabal at a ranch outside of Muzquiz, Coahuila Mexico.

She married Felix Flores Rosales on Feb. 10, 1952. When they were courting, he had taken a famous musical group, Trio de Los Panchos, to her house to serenade his beloved Martina. She held a special place in her heart for that band and their songs. Felix preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1970.

Martina loved to cook for all of her family members; especially her children, nieces and nephews. The chicharones, tamales, tortillas, and bunuelos were some of the finest in the land! While everyone was eating, she loved to tell wonderful stories from her happy childhood. The stories were usually funny and told of how her family always made the best of things, even in hard times.

She loved singing children’s songs to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all the other children in her life. As a young girl she had lots of practice singing because, as was the custom in Mexico, Martina was called to stay with her sisters and sister-in laws when their children were born. She often reminded those nieces and nephews that she had changed their diapers many times!

Martina is survived by six children, Elsa Rosales, Felix Rosales, Jr., Herlinda Mendez (Juan), San Juanita Guerra (Juan); Rogelio Rosales; and Blanca Vasquez. She has 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with a third great-grandchild to be born any day.

Mrs. Rosales is also survived by three brothers,Maximiliano Elguézabal, Nyssa, Apolinar Elguézabal, Muzquiz, Coahuila, Juan Francisco Elguézabal, Presidio, Texas; and a sister, Carmen Marquez in Lubbock, Texas. Three sisters and a brother preceded her in death, Maria de Jesus Rosales, Francisca Garza, Angelina Elguézabal and Manuel Elguézabal.

The family would like to thank Dr. Phillips and the staff at St. Alfonsus Medical Center for all of their special care in her final days.

The family also appreciates the wonderful family and friends that have helped them during this difficult time.

The Rosary will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Nyssa. The Funeral Mass will also be at St. Bridget on Friday at 11 a.m. Lienkaemper Mortuary of Nyssa is in charge of the arrangements.
