She was born in Salt Lake City, on Oct. 15, 1908, to Orson and Sylvia Olson Wilhelmsen. Maurine's early years were spent in Salt Lake City, Centerville, and Bountiful. She attended Hamilton Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High, and graduated from East High School. She also graduated from Salt Lake Business College. At the age of 21, she enjoyed a long ocean voyage from New York to San Francisco via the Panama Canal after working for a year in Washington, D.C.

Maurine was a very athletic person all of her life. In her 80s, she could play a remarkable game of ping pong with her family. She loved fishing in Oregon, especially in the ocean off the coast and on the Deschutes River. Hunting for game was another one of her passions. In the early 1930s, she won two swimming races on the Great Salt Lake between Antelope Island and Saltair. The Deseret News in 1933 wrote that she was “Utah's outstanding distance swimmer.” Maurine also won a number of tennis trophies during her life. In 1931, she was the first woman skier to come down the ski jump at Ecker Hill during its inauguration.

Maurine married Ward Howard Nov. 25, 1933, in San Francisco. During his career with Shell Oil, they lived in San Francisco, Portland, and The Dalles. Around 1946, they moved to John Day, where Maurine began her work as a dispatcher with the Oregon Department of Highways, a position that she held for 22 years. They moved to Ontario in 1961. Ward died in 1975 and Maurine subsequently married Weldon (Wells) O. Hansen in 1979. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Weldon died in 1993.

Maurine was a very sweet, congenial and happy person throughout her life and had many friends, some of whom in Ontario are Joe, Elma, Bert, Mary and Bob. One of her great attributes was a talent for playing ragtime, waltzes and fox trots on the piano. Until she was 96 years old, she could play familiar tunes to the delight of all, including those at senior living centers. Another of her passions was a good game of tile rummy!

Maurine had no children of her own and was the last survivor in a family of six Wilhelmsen children, Imogene, Homer, Carl, Bruce and Kent. She is survived by many nephews and nieces.

He received great pleasure eating out with his family, going on long drives after church Sunday afternoons and always leading church songs and the entire family would join in. Bob felt that church wasn't the building at 202 Sears Drive, it was the church members and family. He touched many lives not only his families, but all who met him. He brought humor to our family and his son Mike has that trait. Bob was involved with the Nyssa Sports Boosters and coached many little league and girls softball teams. He was a genuine math wiz and loved playing games with his family. Bob was a family man, he showed us by spending time with his three children, if it was a softball game or concert for Vicki; helping Mike on his paper route and attending band and choir concerts and was there for support; he helped pitch every ball that Tony would throw and swing the bat with him.

Dad you taught us all to do our best in whatever we do. Thanks for being our Dad.

Betty Lewis

April 6, 1920 - Jan. 30, 2009

Ontario - Betty Lewis, 88, Ontario, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Holy Rosary Medical Center.

Betty lived life with exuberance. She never held back on any undertaking, always doubling her batches of cookies, making complete ensembles for each doll outfit down to coordinating underwear and never knitting a baby sweater that didn't include matching hat, booties and blanket. She attacked all parts of her life in the same manner; her friends knew that she owned the loudest laugh in the theater, would defend them against the injustices of the world and give them anything she had with immeasurable generosity. She was a veracious reader, and, when she lost her eyesight, she continued to build her knowledge through books on tape. Betty loved to talk and had an opinion on most subjects. You always knew where you stood with her.

Betty looked at life with a mathematical mind. From a young child, she loved working with figures and had her own systems for computing solutions. Her first job was working in the record department at JK Gills in Portland.

Olds and Kings was so impressed with her skills they hired her away to start a record department for them. She was offered the job of head buyer in the women's department after scoring high on a math test.

She followed the love of her life, Bill, to the small town of Ontario, where she put those skills to work running the thrift shop for St. Matthew's church and as co-owner of the Ontario Auto Parts.

She was an active volunteer in the organizations where her children and husband participated: Ontario Gun Club, 4-H, and Job's Daughters. Betty also very graciously offered her time and money to such causes as the Holt Adoption Agency, the March of Dimes and the Episcopal Church.

She was also willing to help her community with activities such as election day voting and the census.

Betty is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill; a son, Mark, and his wife, Terry, with grandchildren, Christina and William; a daughter, Loranel, and her husband, Jer, with grandchildren, Ramona and Hans; and her only sister, Elayne Reasnor, of Pendleton. The family is honoring her fervent request to not have a funeral service. We only ask that you say a prayer for her as you say farewell.

Betty Cora (Gray) Lewis would appreciate donations in her name given to the Oregon Talking Book and Braille Services, 250 Winter St. N.E., Salem, OR 97301; or to the Ontario Aquatic Center where she and her husband enjoyed 27 years of aerobic classes.

She spent many years working in the legal profession, eventually in the district attorney's office of Malheur County. Wilma was a member of the National Association of Legal Secretaries, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for most of her adult life, a staunch supporter of ex-P.O.W.s and a life member of the America Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor.
