Ellis W. Antrim
ANTRIM, Ellis W. — Age 94, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away in Hillsboro, Oregon, on January 7, 2005. He was born on August 8, 1910, in Portland, Oregon, to parents, Ray L. Antrim and Nellie (Smith) Antrim. Ellis was one of nine children. He served in the U.S. Army in the 41st Division, in the South Pacific, from April 14, 1942 until October 13, 1945. Ellis was united in marriage to Hazel Commings on June 11, 1947, in Aloha, Oregon. He retired in 1975 from the furnace service and repair business and moved to Roseburg. He was affiliated with First Christian Church of Roseburg. Ellis was involved over many years with the conservation minded Izaak Walton League of America, Oregon Division, and was instrumental in founding the Umpqua Chapter. While a member he served on and chaired several committees including Oregon Division President in 1988 and 1989; President of the Umpqua Chapter, Roseburg, in 1985 and from 1992 through 1995; Vice President in 1984, and again in 1990 and 1991; Treasurer in 1983; Secretary from 1977 through 1982. He also served for many years on the State Division Resolutions Committee and also the State Division Outdoor Ethics Committee. Ellis started volunteering for the Veterans Hospital in Roseburg in 1975 and continued until December of 2004, for a total of 10,353 hours, his wife, Hazel also volunteered with Ellis for over 20 years. Ellis was also a Disabled American Veteran. He was an avid bowler, belonging to several teams over the years and coached bowling at Cedar Bowl. Ellis is survived by his nieces, Janet Lang of Portland; and Diane Sasser of Vancouver, Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; parents, Ray and Nellie; siblings, Mark; Winona; Loy; Mary; Corriene; Nellie; Joyce; and Nadine. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Roseburg, on the corner of Douglas and Kane St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ellis’s honor to a charity of your choice.

Rebecca Ann Thies
THIES, Rebecca Ann — Age 48, of Coquille, Oregon, passed away on February 3, 2005. She was born on May 11, 1956, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to William and Diane (Morelock) Duncan. She lived in Yoncalla, Oregon and Drain, Oregon, most of her life. She graduated from Drain High School. Rebecca married James Thies in Yoncalla, on June 9, 1984. She loved her family more than anything. She enjoyed family holidays and gatherings. Rebecca was a member of the Drain Methodist Church. She worked as a caregiver to seniors and the disabled. Rebecca is survived by her husband of 20 years, Jim Thies; sons, Eric and his wife, Ana Duncan of Drain; Jason Cox of Coquille; sisters, Debra Finn and Rona Graham, both of Yoncalla; father and step-mother, William and Marilyn Duncan of Rice Hill, Oregon; and two grandchildren, William Duncan and Justice Cox. Rebecca was preceded in death by her mother, Diane Duncan in 2000. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2005, from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the Drain Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be at the East Drain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rebecca Thies Fund, in care of U.S.Bank for her grandchildren’s education.

Dwight Wayne Coder Sr.
CODER Sr., Dwight Wayne — Age 74, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home in Lookingglass on Friday, February 7, 2005, from cancer. Dwight was born on October 4, 1930, in Alameda, Kansas, the son of Henry Dwight and Viola Emeline (Eli) Coder. At age eighteen, he married Bonnie Eastman, age sixteen. They had four children together, Linda of Roseburg; Victoria, who preceded him in death in 2004; Dwight Jr. of Portland, Oregon; and Bruce of Salem, Oregon. They moved to Oregon in 1949 and Dwight worked for Hub Lumber and Barcus Motors. In 1963, he married Lois Mentzer who had four children, Judy of Washington; Diane of Roseburg; Ron of Tenmile, Oregon; and Rick of Portland; two sisters, Betty Garret and her husband, Marvin (she preceded him in death in 1995); Marilyn Smith and her husband, Bob of Borrego Springs, California; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He loved the visits from everyone, the cousins from Medford, Oregon, the nieces and nephews and all his neighbors and friends. Per Dwight’s request, no services will be held. Anyone wishing to make any donations in Dwight’s name, please send them to the Lookingglass Community Church, 249 Coos Bay Wagon Rd. Roseburg, OR 97470. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Mortuary.

Arlene J. Granger
GRANGER, Arlene J. — Age 69, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away at a local hospital on February 3, 2005, with her children by her side. She was born on January 4, 1936, in Kitsap, Saskatchewan Province, Canada, the daughter of Helen and Herbert Dyck. Arlene loved her family, music, her savior, and was thoroughly enjoying her retirement years at RiverView Terrace. After her childhood in Canada, she moved to Washington, where she met her husband, Charles Granger. They were married on August 18, 1956, they were married 35 years. After her son, Phillip was born in 1960, the family moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where her second child, Lisa was born. Both Arlene and Charles were employed by Kamehameha Schools, her speciality being special education. In 1974, the family moved to Roseburg where Arlene worked for the school district as both a grade school teacher and psychometrician. Arlene was active in community theatre here as a thespian and accompanist for UACT and Roseburg Community College theatre groups. She was also instrumental in the music program at St. George’s Episcopal Church leading the choir and participating in various church activities and services for many years. Arlene’s time in retirement was spent with her baby grand piano (born the same day she was), her newspapers, crosswords, church, and pictures of her only grandchild, Heather. Arlene is survived by her children, Phillip and Lisa; her mother, Helen Dyck; her daughter-in-law, Lori; and granddaughter, Heather, age four; her brothers, Merv Van Dyck and Eldon Dyck; and a number of other extended family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local NPR affiliate, the JPR Foundation, which can be reached at Jefferson Public Radio,1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520. Fathers Sherman Hesselgrave and William Stroop will be officiating the service at 4 p.m., on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, with a celebration of her life to follow in the Fellowship Hall.

Robert W. Evens
EVENS, Robert W. — Age 90, of Ashland, Oregon, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2004, in an Ashland care center. Mr. Evens was born to Merle and Leslie Evens in Waldport, Oregon, on August 28, 1914. In 1917, he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon, where he lived until he finished high school in 1934. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1936. In 1942, he entered the military and was stationed with the Army Air Corps in England for the duration. In February of 1945, he married the former Irene A. Fleming, an English girl. She preceded him in death in 1989 in Roseburg, Oregon. Shortly after WW II he entered college and in three years received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He remained in the aircraft industry as an engineer until retirement in 1974, at which time he returned to Oregon and settled in Glendale, Oregon. Following the death of his first wife, he met an old friend from his high school days, Edla E. Peterson, and after a brief courtship they were married in Ashland on April 11, 1990. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1997. Survivors include his son, Clyde Rodney Evens of Roseburg; granddaughter, Zara Yasmin Yarbrough Evens of Vancouver, B.C.; two nieces, Patty Lowe and Sherry Evens. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Ashland First Baptist Church. Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral home of Ashland assisted with the arrangements.

Hazel Bernice Fagin
FAGIN, Hazel Bernice — Age 79, of Coos Bay, Oregon, passed away on January 1, 2005. Hazel was born in Hagerman, New Mexico, on March 6, 1925, the daughter of Thomas Cayman and Margaret Ruth (Cornelison) Turner. She was a resident of Empire, Oregon, for many years where she owned and operated the Gates Apartments for 25 years. Hazel attended Oliver Chapel School in Hagerman until moving to Mena, Arkansas, where the family had a peanut farm. She had many fond memories there, and soon met her future husband, Stanley Fagin. Hazel and Stanley worked together on a cotton farm and married on March 29, 1941, while on their lunch break. They soon moved to California for a short time. In 1951, they moved to Sutherlin, Oregon, where they raised their family. They moved again in 1967, to Lincoln City, Oregon, and settled in the Coos Bay area in 1968 and soon bought, sold, traded, and managed residential and rental properties. Hazel was a kind, generous, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked hard all of her life and suffered many years of poor health. She loved to cook for her family and attend garage sales. Hazel touched many lives and will be greatly missed. She is survived by four children, son, Wayne and his wife, Sue of Salem, Oregon; daughter, Sandra Sue Fagin of Charleston, Oregon; daughter, Linda and her husband, Mike of North Bend, Oregon; son, Gary and his wife, Maeti of Portland; sister, Edna Cagle of Mena, Arkansas; eleven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters, and a grandchild. Visitation for Hazel will be at the Coos Bay Chapel, on Thursday, January 6, 2005, from noon to 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at 11 a.m., with Don Berney officiating. Mervin H. Bilderback
BILDERBACK, Mervin H. — Age 90, of Tyee, Oregon, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 30, 2004. He was born on August 29, 1914, in Corning, Iowa, the son of Harvey and Stella (Billingsly) Bilderback. He always had fond memories of hunting with his hounds back in Iowa. He spent three years in the coal mines with his dad before he joined the U.S. Army. Mervin served our country during WW II and was a veteran of Pearl Harbor. After the war, in 1945 he came out west to Oregon, where he met the love of his life, Merle A. Powell. They married and settled in Tyee, Oregon, on the Umpqua River. Mr. Bilderback was a lumberman and was a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers, Local 2949. He retired in 1974. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Merle Bilderback; two sons and two daughters and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We loved him dearly and will miss him. "But, Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles.” Isaiah 40:31. A graveside service will be held at the Cole Valley Cemetery in Umpqua, Oregon, on Saturday, January 8, 2004, at 1 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Stewart Fowler. Friends may pay their respects on Friday, January 7, 2004, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at TAYLOR’S FAMILY CHAPEL.

Rosalie Gray
GRAY, Rosalie — Passed away on the first day of January, 2005, in Sutherlin, Oregon. She was born on July 19, 1928, in Bend, Oregon, one of three children born to Stella and Louis Laird. At an early age the family moved to Sitkum, Alaska, and she spent most of her early life there and in Dora, Alaska. As an adult, Rosalie, her former husband, Edward Brown and children moved to Portland, Oregon, where she worked with the City of Portland Auditors office. Rosalie married her current husband, George Gray, on April 7, 1983. After retiring, she and George traveled a great deal and then settled in Sutherlin. She is survived by her beloved husband, George Gray and her six dearly-loved children, Randal Brown and his wife, Gloria of Myrtle Point, Oregon; Terrel Brown of Beaverton Oregon; Jorja Planalp and her partner, Phillis Whitmore of Portland; Janna Brown and her husband, Richard Seekins of Vancouver, Washington; Kelvin Brown and his wife, Rhonda of Gresham, Oregon; Kayce Blakley and her husband, William of Hillsboro, Oregon. She is missed by her numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Arden. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Erwin. Rosalie, a devout Christian, was active in numerous church activities. She spent many hours studying her bible and participating in prayer meetings with the Women’s group. Rosalie had just traveled to Portland to attend a much anticipated Women’s conference which she enjoyed very much. Rosalie was an avid hiker. She spent many hours hiking the deserts of Arizona looking for beautiful scenes to paint. She was a prolific writer, documenting her travels with pictures and words. She shared these stories with her grandchildren. She was an adventurous woman and as recently as this last summer she took her grandchildren on an exhilarating inner tube float down the North Umpqua River. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at 11 a.m, at the Sutherlin Family Church, at 878 West Sixth Avenue, 97479-9430, (541) 459-9803. Marie Baskin
BASKIN, Marie — Age 72, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away at her home on January 1, 2005. She was born Frances Marie Young on May 7, 1932, in Rattan, Oklahoma, to William and Thora Lee (Duncan) Young. Marie moved to Sutherlin in 1952. She was a former member of the Eagles Lodge in Sutherlin. Marie worked as a waitress for many years at the Ponderosa Inn, now known as the Sutherlin Inn. She enjoyed playing dominos, shoot the moon, and tending her flowers in her garden. Survivors include her children, Debra Kay Baskin of Monmouth, Oregon; Rena Cox and her husband, Roy of Sutherlin; two grandchildren; brother, C.L. Young and his wife, Vivian of Sutherlin; sisters, Shirley Duncan and her husband, Jaudale of Sutherlin; Johnnie Sue Bennett of Sutherlin; Donna Fenton and her husband, Greg of Oakland; Rita Young of Eugene, Oregon. Preceding Marie in death were her brothers, Marlon Young and Larry Young. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, January 7, 2005, at Chapel of the Firs, in Sutherlin, with Pastor Stewart Fowler officiating. Burial will be within the grounds of Cedar Hill Cemetery in Oakland. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family.

Goldie Colton
COLTON, Goldie — Age 75, passed away at her home in Roseburg, Oregon, on December 28, 2004. Goldie was born on June 30, 1929, in Casper, Wyoming, to Carl and Minnie (Luidahl) Moen. On March 2, 1992, Goldie married Norman Colton in Reno, Nevada. Goldie and Norman lived in Roseburg for the last 12 years. Goldie's family has always been important to her. She enjoyed Polka Dancing and Ballroom Dancing, singing in the ladies group called "Sweet Adelines", music, and her gardening. Goldie is survived by her husband, Norman; son, Kelly Adovnik and his wife, Shelly of Mitchell, Oregon; son, Terry Adovnik and his wife, Cindy of San Jose, California; son, Scott Adovnik and his wife, Glo of Fremont, California; step-son, Devlin Colton and his wife, Debbie; step-son, Dan Colton, all of Roseburg; special nephews, Larry and Denny Moen; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many friends. Private Cremation Rites have been held. As per her request, there will only be a private family Memorial Service in Silverton, Oregon. For those who wish, a memorial may be made in her honor to the American Heart Association, 1425 N.E. Irving, Suite 100, Portland, Oregon 97232. Natalie Marie (Smith) Baldwin
BALDWIN, Natalie Marie (Smith) — Age 37, of Waldron, Arkansas, formerly of Riddle, Oregon, passed away on February 5, 2005, in an automobile accident. She was born on February 15, 1967, in Roseburg, Oregon. She is survived by her father and step-mother, Gordon Lee and Judi Smith of Waldron; mother, Mary Jo Able of Canyonville, Oregon; son, Levi Smith of Tri City, Oregon; brother, Vernon and his wife, Stacy Smith of Tacoma, Washington; step-sister, Rebecca and her husband, Scott Smith, of Riddle; maternal grandparents, Albert and Lorretta Everett of Glendale, Oregon; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Vernon and Stella Smith and brother, Stanley Wilt. She will be brought back home to Riddle this summer, where she will be set free in the mountains she loved.

JAMES, Ruth — Passed away on January 20, 2005, in Farmington, New Mexico, from a massive stroke. Ruth was born on October 7, 1925, in Illinois, to Louella and Earl Lewis. She lived most of her life in Roseburg, Oregon, and graduated from Roseburg High School. She married her high school sweetheart, George James in 1943. They raised six children. Ruth was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved reading good books and listening to christian music. She was an avid gardener and loved her flowers. She also enjoyed watching her favorite television programs. She is survived by Carol and Floyd Poland of Roseburg; Sherry and David Collins of Kasil, Alaska; Jerry James of Escondido, California; Paul James and Kerri Joseph of Durango, Colorado; Rachel and David Harjo of Calumet, Wisconsin; Steve and Rocky James of Roseburg; sister, Betty and Fred Everett; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and ex-husband, George James. There will be a memorial service at the Hucrest Community Church of God at 2075 NW Witherspoon, in Roseburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Gideon Living Memorial Bible Plan, memorial gift cards will available at the memorial service.

Donald Arvid Nieminen
NIEMINEN, Donald Arvid— Age 78, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 7, 2005. He was born on August 3, 1926, in Portland, Oregon, the son of Oscar Arvid and Alma (Anderson) Nieminen. He lived all his life in Oregon, except for the time he spent in the military serving our country during WWII. He was raised and educated in Clatskanine, Oregon. Donald retired from the Federal Government at the age of 54, after 32 years, and has never looked back. Mr. Nieminen moved to Sutherlin nine years ago and was united in marriage by Pastors Bill Sanders and Paul Glazner to Waltraud Robeson on August 8, 1998. Donald was a member of the Sutherlin Family Church and the Sutherlin Christian Assembly. He was also a member of the Elks and the Skp’s. Donald very much enjoyed traveling in his fifth wheel with his wife, Waltraud. He is survived by his wife, Waltraud of Sutherlin; three children, Tim Robeson and his wife, Julie of Oakland, Oregon; Valerie Robeson of Pacific Palisades, California; Patrick Robeson and his wife, Arleen of Fullerton, California; his brother, Ron Nieminen and his wife, Ellen of Clatskanine; his four grandchildren, Kristi Robeson; Skyler Gordy; Mahogany Gordy; Josh Nieminen and his wife, Angela; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. There will be a memorial service held on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the Sutherlin Family Church. Ernest John Ueland
UELAND, Ernest John — Age 94, of Glide, Oregon, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2005. He was born in Shelley, Minnesota, on October 16, 1910, to John and Ingeborg (Versland) Ueland. Ernest attended school in Big Timber, Montana. On July 3, 1936, he married Roberta Eleanor Kelly in Livingston, Montana. They moved to the Roseburg area in 1948. Ernest was a truck mechanic for Staley's Transport, operated Colony Texaco for 18 years, and after his retirement he was a park caretaker for Pass Creek Park and Whistler's Bend Park. He was a past president of the Rod and Gun Club, drove for Meals on Wheels, volunteered for the Umpqua Community Network and the Douglas County Community Network. Ernest loved gardening, camping, hunting, and fishing. He is preceded in death by his son, John Leroy Ueland. He is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Roberta Eleanor Ueland; daughter, Sharon Ueland Pearson and her husband, George Pearson; grandchildren, Carolyn Ueland Thomas and her husband, Fred H. Thomas, III; Elizabeth Ueland Good; Pamela Pearson Pohl and her husband, James Pohl; Randall Pohl; eight great-grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Glide Baptist Church, 357 Glide Loop Drive, Glide. Pastor Mike Miller will be officiating. Visitation will follow from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses, 965 W. Harvard Blvd, Roseburg, Oregon. Private interment will be held on a later date. Donations can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association Society, in memory of his son, John Ueland.

Dwight Wayne Coder Sr.
CODER Sr., Dwight Wayne — Age 74, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home in Lookingglass on Friday, February 4, 2005, from cancer. Dwight was born on October 4, 1930, in Alameda, Kansas, the son of Henry Dwight and Viola Emeline (Eli) Coder. At age eighteen, he married Bonnie Eastman, age sixteen. They had four children together, Linda of Roseburg; Victoria, who preceded him in death in 2004; Dwight Jr. of Portland, Oregon; and Bruce of Salem, Oregon. They moved to Oregon in 1949 and Dwight worked for Hub Lumber and Barcus Motors. In 1963, he married Lois Mentzer who had four children, Judy of Washington; Diane of Roseburg; Ron of Tenmile, Oregon; and Rick of Portland; two sisters, Betty Garret and her husband, Marvin (she preceded him in death in 1995); Marilyn Smith and her husband, Bob of Borrego Springs, California; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He loved the visits from everyone, the cousins from Medford, Oregon, the nieces and nephews and all his neighbors and friends. Per Dwight’s request, no services will be held. Anyone wishing to make any donations in Dwight’s name, please send them to the Lookingglass Community Church, 249 Coos Bay Wagon Rd. Roseburg, OR 97470. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Mortuary.

Ruth James
JAMES, Ruth — Passed away on January 20, 2005, in Farmington, New Mexico, from a massive stroke. Ruth was born on October 7, 1925, in Illinois, to Louella and Earl Lewis. She lived most of her life in Roseburg, Oregon, and graduated from Roseburg High School. She married her high school sweetheart, George James in 1943. They raised six children. Ruth was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved reading good books and listening to christian music. She was an avid gardener and loved her flowers. She also enjoyed watching her favorite television programs. She is survived by Carol and Floyd Poland of Roseburg; Sherry and David Collins of Kasil, Alaska; Jerry James of Escondido, California; Paul James and Kerri Joseph of Durango, Colorado; Rachel and David Harjo of Calumet, Wisconsin; Steve and Rocky James of Roseburg; sister, Betty and Fred Everett; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and ex-husband, George James. There will be a memorial service at the Hucrest Community Church of God at 2075 NW Witherspoon, on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at 1 p.m., in Roseburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Gideon Living Memorial Bible Plan, memorial gift cards will available at the memorial service.

Ethel Marie Wildt
WILDT, Ethel Marie — Age 82, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2005. She was born on July 20, 1922, in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of George and Sadie (Bowen) Erickson. She was united in marriage to Phillip Wildt on April 25, 1947, in Portland. They moved to Roseburg in the early 1950's where they owned and operated Phil's Appliance for thirty years. He passed away May 17, 1985. She enjoyed growing and arranging flowers and was a member of the Roseburg Garden Club. She also enjoyed decorating and other arts and crafts. In recent years she worked at the Main Street Gallery in downtown Roseburg. She was a very active member of the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. By many, she was lovingly known as "Auntie Ethel". She is survived by four daughters, Sondra Griffin; Pam Clemons; Connie Kostenko; Becky Hansen; three sisters, Bessie Torland; Vera Veteto; Norma Leslie; as well as eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ethel also has many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at 3 p.m. Private interment will be at the Roseburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations in Ethel's name can be made to ADRA (Adventist Disaster Relief Fund) for the Tsunami Relief Effort at 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Springs, Maryland, 20904-6601.
