ROSS, James “J.R.” Holly — Born January 20, 1948. I left you all on March 2, 2005. I was a fortunate man to have been able to travel the world and meet the most incredible, beautiful people. I saw the most spectacular scenery, plants and animals. I loved the world that I lived in. I loved the people. I loved music from opera to the music that flowers and trees made as they danced in the wind. I loved the magical music of ocean waves and thundering waterfalls. I leave behind my life-long, beloved friend, mentor and confidant, David Swain of Hawaii. My very loving friends, Billy Russo; Mary Griese; and Rosa Waggoner; and all of you affiliated with the HIV Resource Center. Thank you and eternal love to my sister, Margo and her husband, Don Mandish for their love and unfailing support and taking care of me during my long illness. Raymond Presnell
PRESNELL, Raymond — Age 53, finally got to go fishing again with his dad on March 4, 2005. He passed away at home lovingly tended by his family. Ray is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Reen and his wife, Karin; son, Toby; daughter, Lia; mother, Tina; sister, Julie and her husband, Greg Snider; brother, David and his wife, Kathy. He was the much loved step-dad of Jeff, Josh, and Tracy; and grandpa to Kassie; Erika; Dylan; Justin; Tanner; and Logan. Ray is also mourned by nephew, Jeremy; and nieces, Jessica; Marissa; Onica; and Keena. He is survived by many friends, especially Dan Schindler; Dan Cossy; Don Sargent; Doc Foster; and Mert Tester. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles. The family especially appreciates the kindness shown by Doctors John and Tim Powell, as well as Ann from Mercy Hospice. At Ray's request, no services will be held but instead there will be a celebration of his life this summer. Marvin Lee Newport
NEWPORT, Marvin Lee — Age 70, went to be with the Lord on March 7, 2005. He was born on September 17, 1934 in Willis Creek, Oregon, the son of John William Newport and Delia Ann Hill. He was the youngest of ten children. Marvin moved to Roseburg, Oregon, at age five. After the ninth grade, Marvin entered the tile trade and received his journeymanship in November 1957. He worked in this field until his retirement at age 62. Marvin married Helen Jacobson in 1970. Marvin had been a resident of Horton, Oregon, since 1972. Marvin is survived by his wife of 35 years, Helen Newport of Horton; four children, Terry Newport of Otis, Oregon; Kathy Brown of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Christine Lammert of Roseburg; and Daren Newport of Glide, Oregon; two step-children, John Jacobson of Washington; Julie Cole of Salem, Oregon; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson; two sisters, Stella McGuire of Frontenac, Kansas and Lorene Griffin of Roseburg; two brothers, Les Newport of Santa Rosa, California and Ernie Newport of Portland, Oregon. Marvin was a humorous, entertaining individual who enjoyed rock hunting, playing guitar, and living the farming life. There will be no services per his request.

Frances E. Kusler
KUSLER, Frances E.— A memorial service for Frances E. Kusler will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2005. Jeff Holder will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Myrtle Creek I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Mrs. Kusler, 92, of Medford, Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2005, in Farmington Square, Medford. She was born on September 5, 1912, in Ashland, Oregon, to William F. and Frances E. Cooper. She attended elementary and junior high school in Ashland. She married Elmer Leighton in 1933. In 1959, she moved to Medford. In August 1959, she married Marion A. Kusler who preceded her in death in October 1979. Mrs. Kusler and her husband, Marion owned and operated Big 4 Market in Central Point, Oregon, from 1963 to 1973. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a Girl Scout Leader and Rebecah Lodge. Mrs. Kusler enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and her favorite pastime, working crossword puzzles. Survivors include a son, Keith O. Leighton; a daughter, Eunice May Teemley, both of Medford; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion and three brothers, Oscar E., Ernest F. and Arthur E. Cooper. She was a beloved wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed! Conger Morris Funeral Directors in Medford is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Roy H. Latham
LATHAM, Roy H. — A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, March 12, 2005, in the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Myrtle Creek for Roy H. Latham, who passed away on February 21, 2005 at the age of 87. Mr. Latham was born on November 16, 1917, in Cutter, New Mexico. He worked on Mare Island during World War II, and was a carpenter for 30 years in Bakersfield, California. After retirement he was active with Maranatha Volunteers building churches, schools, and various other projects. Mr. Latham is survived by his wife, Ethel Latham of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; his daughter, Judith and son-in-law, John of Milpitas, California; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the food bank of the Adventist Community Service of Myrtle Creek at P.O. Box 863, Myrtle Creek, Oregon 97457.

Mary Jo Burch
BURCH, Mary Jo — Age 72, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on March 8, 2005, in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born on January 15, 1933, in Memphis, Texas, to William and Nora (Gary) Walker. Mary Jo married Howard Burch on May 29, 1948, in Bakersfield, California. Thirty-nine years ago they moved to Sutherlin. Her greatest joy was her family. When her children were little Mary Jo was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed playing games with her family and going on vacations, visiting out of town relatives. Mary Jo liked to listen to country music, make patchwork quilts, sew, knit, and read. Survivors include her husband, Howard Burch of Sutherlin; children, Paul Burch and his wife, Linda of Emmett, Idaho; Mary Lee Hanson and her husband, Chet of Roseburg; brother, Jerald Walker of Huntington Beach, California; sisters, Oleta Banks of Porterville, California; Ozella Fitch of Bakersfield, California; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her children, Herschel James Burch who passed away in January 1997; John Allen Burch who passed away in April 1999; and infant son, Bobby Burch. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, March 11, 2005, at Chapel of the Firs. Burial will be within the grounds of Valley View Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family.

Walton C. ‘Wally’ Dixon
DIXON, Walton C. "Wally" — Age 80, of Canyonville, Oregon, passed away on Friday evening, March 4, 2005. He was born in Silverton, Oregon, on December 4, 1924, to the late John and Rose Wing Dixon. Wally joined the Navy during WW II, serving from June 18, 1943, to February 14, 1946, when he was discharged. Wally married his high school sweetheart in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on May 24, 1946. They moved to Canyonville in 1953. Wally worked as a foreman for Stomar Lumber Co. in Riddle, Oregon. He also worked at Green Valley Lumber Co. and Round Prairie Lumber Co. where he was a superintendent at both mills. Wally loved the outdoors and camping with his family and especially with the grandchildren. The grandchildren called camping with Grandpa Wally, "Camp Wally." He was always entertaining them with crafts. Wally was an avid fisherman and his grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge in Canyonville. Wally is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Dixon of Canyonville; four daughters, Roxann and her husband, Ron Harris of Cottage Grove, Oregon; Penny and her husband, Ron Brakefield of Veneta, Oregon; Kristina and her husband, Jim Gross of Canyonville; Becky and her husband, Greg Richardson of Estacada, Oregon; two sisters, Jean Baker and Joan Joiner, both of Eugene, Oregon; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, 1121 SW Salmon, Suite 201, Portland, Oregon, 97205-2021. Memorial services were held today, March 10, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Tri City Church of Christ with Pastor Daniel Jocoy officiating. Private urn burial will be at the Canyonville Masonic Cemetery. Richard A. Walker Sr.
WALKER, Richard A. Sr. — Age 79, passed away on March 6, 2005. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Canyonville, Oregon, on March 14, at 12 p.m. He was born on January 8, 1926, in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Clifford M. and Mary (Helms) Walker. He grew up in Southern California. After graduating from high school in 1943 he joined the Navy and spent the remainder of World War II serving on the submarine tender U.S.S. Sperry, stationed in Guam. During a wartime leave he married Bonnie Langworthy on March 27, 1945. After his discharge he worked several years for the Highway Dept. in California. In 1960, he moved his family to Alaska where he worked for the Department of Highways until his retirement in 1982. In 1987, he and his wife, moved to Riddle, Oregon. He was active in his church and helped many friends build their homes, along with helping several civic groups in the building of new structures. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Riddle; sons, Richard Jr. and wife, Connie of Salem, Oregon; and Mark and his wife, Candi of Valdez, Alaska; daughters, Davette and husband, Ron Stephens of Valdez; and Robin and husband, Allen Parker of Ogden, Utah; grandsons, Steven Johnson; Brian and Michael Walker; granddaughters, Geneviere Stephens; Rebecca King; and Kelly Walker; great-grandsons, Douglas and Eric Johnson and Tannim Walker; sisters, Dorothy and husband, Harry Abrams; Elsie Jo and husband, Leon Abrams; and one brother, Robert and wife, Susie Walker; sister-in-law, Betty Coates of Fresno, California; Vera LeBlanc of Nederland, Texas; Louise Langworthy of Sacramento, California; Nancy Rodriguez of Simi Valley, California; and one brother-in-law, Alfonso Rodriguez of Simi Valley; and many nieces and nephews. Layne Riley Louis Simmons
SIMMONS, Layne Riley Louis — Four year old son of James and Shylo Simmons, passed away at a Portland, Oregon, hospital on Monday night, March 7, 2005. He was born in Eugene, Oregon, on January 1, 2001, to James and Shylo Simmons of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Layne was a very energetic and vivacious young boy known as Mommy’s Angel and Daddy's Hero or Daddy's Smiley. He will be missed by all who knew him but will never be forgotten. Stacie Lynn Holcomb
HOLCOMB, Stacie Lynn Erwin Young — Age 32, was born to Jim and Penny Erwin on April 10, 1972, in Roseburg, Oregon. While growing up, she attended the Glide schools and was active in cheerleading, yearbook, and journalism. Stacie graduated from Glide High School in 1990. On August 13, 1992, Stacie gave birth to her first son, Brock Christopher Young. Six weeks later, she went to work for Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped, where she worked her way up to Program Director, and continued to work there until her death. While working for Umpqua Homes, Stacie met the love of her life, Douglas Truman Holcomb. Doug and Stacie were married on September 7, 2001, in Tahoe, Nevada. Stacie gave birth to her second son, Blake Truman Dale Holcomb on March 7, 2005. Stacie loved reading, writing letters and poems to the ones she loved, making jewelry, and keeping in touch with all her friends, new and old. Stacie is survived by her two sons, Brock and Blake; her husband, Doug; her parents, Jim and Penny Erwin; her brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Amy, and their daughter, Paige Mykenzie Erwin; grandparents, Troy and Opal Erwin; Doug's aunt and uncle, Carol and Gary Combs; and the rest of the Holcomb and Russell family; special friends, Josette Wallig and Kirsten Emborg; and numerous other relatives and friends, including her "babies" at Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped. Services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 5599 North Umpqua Hwy. Stacie will be remembered by her loved ones as having a heart of gold. Gladys Kay Hall
HALL, Gladys Kay — Passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2005, at her home in Prineville, Oregon. She was 47 years old. No services will be held. Gladys was born on March 22, 1957, to William and Mollie (Dewar) Parry in Roseburg, Oregon. Gladys married Jeffery L. Hall on November 2, 1991, in Dallas, Oregon. She attended school in the Roseburg area. Gladys moved to Salem, Oregon and worked for Agri-Pac for 3 years. She worked at various jobs in the Salem area before she moved to Falls City, Oregon, where she was Assistant Manager at Rite-Aid in 1996. In 2003, Gladys moved to Prineville where she was a homemaker. Her hobbies included bowling, camping, fishing, gardening, her dogs and fish, and spending time with her family. She always loved to decorate her home for all holidays. Survivors include her husband, Jeffery L. Hall of Powell Butte, Oregon; daughters, Stephanie Congleton of Lacey, Washington; son, Bill Congleton of Roseburg; brothers, Robert Parry and Ronald Parry, both of Roseburg; sisters, Lois Burton and Dalene Tripp of Roseburg; father, William Parry; mother, Mollie Peach; and maternal grandmother, Sara Lewis of Roseburg. Melva Anise Day
DAY, Melva Anise — Age 87, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on March 9, 2005, in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born on September 5, 1917, in Cambria, California, to Fred and Febbee Williams. On September 20, 1965, in Nevada City, Nevada, Melva married John Day. They lived in San Luis Obispo, California, until moving to Sutherlin in July 1985. Melva was very active at the Sutherlin Senior Center. She ran the bingo table for many years and also worked at the sales table. Melva enjoyed painting with acrylics and displayed her work at the Senior Center. She liked spending time at the beach, going fishing, and camping. Melva was known for the delicious meals that she made for family and friends, especially the big Italian dinners that she cooked. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Survivors include her husband, John Day of Sutherlin; children, Ed Mazza and his wife, Deborah of Rogue River, Oregon; Judy Antunz of Marshall, Illinois; and Fred Mazza of Salem, Oregon; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Norman; brothers, Floyd Williams; Fred Williams; and Herbie Williams; and sister, Dolly Hagin. Graveside services will be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Oregon, on Monday, March 14, 2005, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to John Day.

Fred Daniel Wilson
WILSON, Fred Daniel— Age 86, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2005. Fred was born on September 12, 1918, to Harrison and Tishie (Snyder) Wilson in Creston, North Carolina. Fred lived in the Roseburg and Winston, Oregon, area since 1960. Fred married his soulmate, Leslie Leonard on August 14, 1962, in Reno, Nevada. After Fred’s retirement from Roseburg Lumber as a press operator, he and his wife, Leslie enjoyed traveling for five years to every state in the Union. Fred and Leslie even went to Hawaii and Alaska for three months, then on to Nova Scotia and across Canada. Since then, Fred has enjoyed gardening, fishing, and visiting with friends. Fred is survived by his wife, Leslie; brother, Carness Wilson of North Carolina; daughter, Amy Irwin of Massachusetts; son, Wayne Wilson of Massachusetts; his step-children, Marvin Essex of Colorado; Sandra Kirchner of Montana; Richard Mullins of Roseburg; Vikki Lillard of Hillsboro; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. At Fred’s request there will be no public services. Private cremation rites have been held. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in charge of arrangements.

Patrick K. Spencer
SPENCER, Patrick K. — Age 52, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on March 13, 2005. He was born on July 23, 1952, in Patterson, New Jersey. Patrick is survived by his wife, Louise; three sons, Isaac Spencer; Ken Spencer; and Karston Spencer; one daughter, Laura Spencer. Patrick will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.
A memorial service of worship and thanksgiving will be held at the Green Community Church, 3777 Carnes Road, at 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 19, 2005. Hubert Wagers
WAGERS, Hubert — Age 81, passed away on March 15, 2005, at his apartment in Hood River, Oregon. Hubert was born on December 3, 1923, near Tahlequah, Oklahoma, at a place called Qualls, in Cherokee County, to parents, Rebecca Blackwell Wagers and Moses Wagers. The family lived in Cherokee County. Hubert entered the Army on December 2, 1942. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 2274th Hawaiian Seacoast Artillery Command in the Army Signal Corps. He was discharged on January 18, 1946, at Fort Camp Beale, California. Hubert was an electronics technician and worked on radios, transmitters, and telephone lines. Hubert attended and graduated from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. On June 11, 1949, Hubert married Violet Parkhurst in Roseburg, Oregon. They have two children, Carolyn Wagers McDaniel of Hood River and Mark H. Wagers of Long Beach, California. Hubert taught school in West Side, Fort Rock and Lakeview, all in Lake County, Oregon. He also spent one term teaching mathematics at Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He spent the rest of his working years driving a bus for the handicapped at Sunrise Enterprises, in Roseburg. Hubert moved to the Down Manor and later Brookside Manor in Hood River, after the death of his wife, Violet. Preceding Hubert in death is his wife of 52 years, Violet; his parents; two brothers, Farnum and J.C. Wager. Hubert is survived by his son, Mark and his daughter, Carolyn; two granddaughters, Rachel McDaniel Lee and Robin McDaniel; two sisters, Barbara Wagers Fox of Fresno, California and Ester Wagers Holmes of Waldron, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private inurnment will be held by the family in the Tenmile Cemetery, in Douglas County, Oregon. Donations may be made to Hood River or Douglas County Hospice.

Arthur Keith Henry
HENRY, Arthur Keith – Age 76, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on March 11, 2005. He was born on July 13, 1928, in Toronto, Canada, to the late George and Grace Henry. He grew up in Southern California, moving there from Canada at the age of one. He married Mary Hearn on March 31, 1951, in Hunnington Park, California. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1953, stationed in San Diego, California. After his discharge, he became a journeyman electrician. He took pride in his work, and enjoyed talking about the many different projects he had worked on over the years such as installing the first moving sidewalks in the L.A. Airport. Arthur enjoyed fishing and living by the water. He enjoyed being on the pit crew during the five years his son raced his sprint car. In 1984, he and his wife moved to Roseburg, where he later retired. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Roseburg; daughters, Sandra and her husband, John Shoup of Coos Bay, Oregon; Linda and her husband, Dennis Black of Umpqua, Oregon; Janet and her husband, Jerry Lambert of Gold Beach, Oregon; son, Brian and his wife, Sherri, and their children, Jordan, Ashley, Sarah and Erica of Roseburg; brother, Graham and his wife, Jean of Berkeley, California; nephews, Steven and Kevin, and their families. He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Heather Black of Umpqua. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL of Roseburg is assisting the family.

Andrew William Armstrong
ARMSTRONG, Andrew William — Age 34, of Roseburg, Oregon, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 14, 2005. He was born on May 24, 1970 in Stockton, California, the son of Sandra Sue Armstrong. Andrew was raised and educated in Oklahoma. He graduated in Wilberton, Oklahoma, before entering the Armed Services and going on to Desert Storm. Andrew was a member of the Newton Creek Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Carrie Colegrove on June 20, 1998, in Roseburg. He was currently a full time student at Umpqua Community College. Mr. Armstrong was striving to get his LPN license and then to go on to get his Physicians Assistant license. He loved his family very much, he also loved the outdoors and to travel. He is survived by his wife, Carrie of Roseburg, two children, Raymond and Anna Sue of Roseburg; his mother, Sandra Sue Harrison of Laytonville, California; grandmother, Zelma Armstrong of Laytonville; three sisters, Jennifer Harrison of Laytonville; Tonya Davis of Antlers, Oklahoma; and Heather Dole of Waterford, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews. Andrew was a wonderful father, husband and son who devoted his entire life to his family and will be missed forever. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005 at 1:00 PM at the Newton Creek Church. Pastor Gary Strubhar will be officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

ROSS, James “J.R.” Holly — Born January 20, 1948. I left you all on March 2, 2005. I was a fortunate man to have been able to travel the world and meet the most incredible, beautiful people. I saw the most spectacular scenery, plants and animals. I loved the world that I lived in. I loved the people. I loved music from opera to the music that flowers and trees made as they danced in the wind. I loved the magical music of ocean waves and thundering waterfalls. I leave behind my life-long, beloved friend, mentor and confidant, David Swain of Hawaii. My very loving friends, Billy Russo; Mary Greise; and Rosa Waggoner; and all of you affiliated with the HIV Resource Center. Thank you and eternal love to my sister, Margo and her husband, Don Mandish for their love and unfailing support and taking care of me during my long illness.
