Keith Dale Husen
HUSEN, Keith Dale — On March 19, 2005, Keith Dale Husen gathered his family and said his last goodbyes. For more than 10 years he had valiantly battled cancer with courage and the determination to overcome it. Even with his positive outlook, it just wasn't enough. . . Keith was born to Minnie (Pollock) and Carl Husen in Grants Pass, Oregon, on the 30th of September, 1928. He and his brother, Carl Calvin Husen, who survives, were the fourth generation of the Pollock family to be born and raised north of Grants Pass in the Jump-Off-Joe Creek area. Keith met Evelyn Waffle while life guarding on the Rogue River one summer. He was completing a teaching degree at Southern Oregon College. They married in 1950 and he was called to serve two years in the U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea. Upon completion of his tour, he returned home to Evelyn and his teaching career. They would have celebrated their 55th anniversary in June. Keith taught school for 36 years in the Roseburg and Winston, Oregon, school districts. He also enjoyed coaching sports. He and Evelyn raised two sons in the rural Olalla area near Winston. Keith gave inspiration to his sons, Marvin Keith and Rollie Dale, with his fondness for community activities, fundraisers, helping friends and neighbors and teaching. Keith found goodness and beauty in all things natural. He enjoyed gardening and raising livestock and had a special love for horses and watching them run on the ranch. During this time, Keith served as President of the Tenmile PTA and was often called upon for his carpentry skills to construct booths for the annual carnivals. He led 4-H clubs for 12 years, instructing his kids and many others in the community in the proper care and feeding of livestock. His “Olalla Papagos” won many awards at the county and state fairs. Keith will be missed by those whose lives he touched in his uniquely strong and gentle way, especially his boys, their wives, and his six grandchildren. It has always been a real pleasure and sense of pride for them to hear, while in a store, restaurant, or even a hospital, "Hey, aren't you Mr. Husen?" or " I was in your class at Joseph Lane (or Green or Winston Jr. High). You were my favorite teacher! You made me want to learn! You showed me I could!” And of course he was Keith Husen and he remembered each and every one of them. Yes, Keith was a strong, kind and gentle father and husband to the end. We all love you Dad. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, March 25, 2005, at Taylor's Family Chapel, 245 S.W. Main St., Winston. Ray is now in the good company of his two angels, Lois and Becky. Ray was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 19, 1925, the son of the late Joseph R. Bagshaw Sr. and Ada A. Bagshaw. Ray moved at an early age with his family to the San Diego, California, area where he completed his education. At sixteen, he met his future bride, Lois Dolan, and on April 22, 1943, joined the Navy for a three year tour of duty. On October 13, 1943, he received his Navy Training Course Certificate as Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class. He was a World War II Veteran stationed on the USS Langley, serving in major sea battles. Upon his return from duty to California, Ray and Lois were united in marriage on December 5, 1945. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy on February 28, 1946. Shortly after they moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon, to begin their 56 years together. After a year and the birth of their son, they relocated to the Roseburg area where they found their permanent home. Ray worked many jobs, however, discovered carpentry was the trade for him. He received his journeyman's certificate on August 19, 1948. He worked for Todd Building Company for many years and eventually became the manager of City Lumber and Building supply. During his working years he was very active in the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce. Ray took early retirement at 55, and Lois and he enjoyed many wonderful years together in the home he built for her in the country. Ray was an avid outdoorsman instilling the same passion in his son and grandsons. He enjoyed fishing the ocean, rivers and lakes of Oregon. He especially loved the scenic and beautiful Lemolo Lake where he mastered catching the elusive Brown Trout. Poole Creek Campground was a familiar setting for the Bagshaw/Daniels families. He enjoyed bird and big game hunting. Ray became a single engine piloting. He owned an aerobatic plane and taught many local residents the skills of dives and rolls. Ray liked to travel and enjoyed every trip he took throughout the years. He loved to meet new people and they immediately recognized the genuine kindness of this man. Ray was a member St. Joseph's Parish, the American Legion, and an honorary member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local #2067 for 57 years. Ray will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, always caring and providing for his family. He was a very special father-in-law, opening his heart and home to new members of the family and considering them his new daughter and son. As a grandfather, he loved each grandchild equally and unconditionally. Through the years he was a friend and mentor, proud of his family's accomplishments and supportive of them during times of disappointment. He is now at peace and his broken and tired heart is mended. He is with those that he loved deeply and lost. For family and friends left behind, we will remember the years of kindness, his caring nature, his support of others and his great outdoor lessons. We will have these memories for the rest of our lives.
