William Alden Billings
BILLINGS, William Alden III —Age 63, of Dillard, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his home. He was born on December 16, 1941. From such unique and special beginnings, Bill’s life embraced an enormous collection of enrichments. His friendships are numerous and more often than not, relationships with Bill last from first meeting to now and forever. The early years of Bill’s life were spent in Seattle, Washington, with his adoptive family who adored him. His sister, Juanita, nearly 25 years his senior, loved him dearly, coddled him too much and mothered him more than he could tolerate at times. The love and parenting he always treasured came from Ella, the mother who adopted him and cared for him from infancy. During Bill’s formative years in Seattle, he grew so fast that he spent a summer in traction as his bone growth outpaced everything else. He finally reached six foot four inches and left it at that. The 60’s and early 70’s in Seattle were intense and life changing in many ways. He discovered his callings in both theatre and with acrylics on canvas. He also met and married Dianne, the love of his life and best friend always. In 1977 they found the home of their dreams…the dome on the hill surrounded by acres of beauty and other homes full of more forever friends. 1979 brought daughter, Jasmine into Bill and Dianne’s world. Her birth radiated pride and appreciation from Bill that was matched only by his elation on her wedding day last summer when he walked “Jas” down the aisle at the James Ranch. What a glow. Another constant element in Bill’s life was his work at the Spring Fair over the past 27 years. His involvement with neighbors and friends and family was a given. He thoroughly enjoyed the celebration atmosphere accompanying a gathering of friends. Bill’s sense of humor and glorious exaggeration (as documented in snapshots galore) are art forms in themselves. His paintings on canvas, design and decoration of the dome, banner making or the Spring Fair and attention to detail are remarkable. When Bill’s health was seriously challenged 3 years ago he fought back and won a much healthier and more energetic life. Since his recovery from the lung infection that hospitalized him then, Bill created new works of art daily. His home is truly his studio and gallery. The unexpected passing of Bill has so many of us mourning. To sum him up is not easy. He is more than three dimensional in fact, Bill Billings is: painter of pictures, planter of trees, opera buff, actor, stage manager, foe of oppression, son, husband, brother, uncle, son-in-law, father-in-law, father of the bride, best friend, protector of earth, summoner of snow, lover of sun, Mr. Clean, Father Bill Sir, yard man, lover of animals, toys, candy, and good people. Keeper of the gate, keeper of the faith, fabulous frog, faithful companion, nurturer, light of Dianne’s life, creator of the tantoo and patron of the arts. We miss you so. There will be a celebration of Bill’s life at the Dome on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Hayward Reed
REED, Hayward — Age 88, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2005, at his Salem, Oregon, home surrounded with love by family members. He was born to parents Hayward and Rose Romaine Mather Reed at the family Rose Orchard farm in Yolo County near Sacramento, California, on April 25, 1916. At age 9, he lost his mother following the birth of his youngest brother, Marvin. Severe cold weather wiped out the fruit crops in the spring of 1929, helping cause the eventual loss of all his father’s fruit orchards but those in Gridley and Vina, California. His family moved to the Vina area during his junior year of high school. After graduating from Los Molinos High School in 1934, he attended one year at California Agricultural College in Davis, California. After the death of his older brother, George in a tractor accident, Hayward returned home to help his father run the family fruit orchards near Vina and Gridley. He worked hard, thriving on the confidence shown by his father in his abilities. Following the early death of his father in 1938, he began his own orchard spraying business and grew peaches near Gridley. With his work and devotion he helped his sister, Rose and three younger brothers, Ogden, Caleb and Marvin, as much as possible during this time. In July 1942, he met the love of his life, Marjorie June Sayles, at the Feather River south of Oroville, California. With her family from Colorado, Marjorie was visiting an aunt and uncle in Oroville. He visited her in Colorado after the summer’s work and they were married in the Methodist parsonage in Colorado Springs on January 15, 1943. Hayward and his bride, Marjorie, first made their home in the Gridley, California, area where they grew fruit crops. While living there, sons, Hayward Douglas and George Robert and daughter, Kathleen June were born in Oroville, which had the nearest hospital. Hayward played an active role in successfully developing enthusiasm and financial support in both the agricultural and medical communities for building a hospital in Gridley, where his son, Richard Leonard was born in 1949. In 1951, the family moved to the Vina area north of Chico where daughter, Rose Romaine was born and they produced various field crops. Hayward also grew test plots of experimental hybrid corn. The cornfields, watermelon patches, irrigation ditches, open space and nearby "forest," Sacramento River, slough and creeks were sources of adventure, exploration and enjoyment for the Reed children. Hayward and Marjorie Reed and their five children moved to a ranch in the Flournoy Valley west of Roseburg, Oregon, in 1961 where the family produced hay and tried their hand at raising sheep and cattle while Marjorie taught school and served as a counselor at Winston Junior High School. Expressing his core values of love of family, integrity, education, learning and communication, Hayward actively supported his wife and children in all their endeavors. Hayward began a new career in 1965, in real estate, becoming a real estate broker in 1968. The owner of Hayward Reed Realty, Hayward was active in Douglas and Coos counties for many years and maintained his broker license until he was 80 years old. Hayward and Marjorie moved from Roseburg to Bandon in 1995. Since 1976, when they bought their first beachfront lots south of Bandon, Hayward and Marjorie and their children and grandchildren enjoyed many wonderful times at their south Bandon homes. In 1998, they moved to Salem to be near their daughter Kathleen Johnson and her family. Expressing his core value of love of family, integrity, education, learning and communication, Hayward actively supported his wife, children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. Hayward and Marjorie also demonstrated a strong egalitarian sense, encouraging their daughters as well as their sons to do their best and treating all people with respect.
