She lived to reach the age of 95 years, 6 months and 15 days. It was a beautiful Autumn day crisp and clear with the sun shining and a cool breeze coming through her window. She so wanted to be able to stay at home. Her wishes were carried out by family, Mercy Home Health, Mercy Hospice and other loving caregivers including a special little girl, Kaitlyn Rasmussen, all angels sent from heaven. Mercedes Ione was born on March 9, 1910, to Frances Robert Seymour and Sarah Allice May Cory Seymour in La Moure County, North Dakota. She was the middle child with four brothers, Robert DeForest (Forest); Shannon Merrill (Merrill); Kenneth Woodrow (Kenny); and Harland Eugene (Harley). After her father’s untimely death; and the following winter, the death of her eighteen year old brother from pneumonia, the family moved to Laurel, Nebraska to be closer to her mothers family. She attended school in Laurel graduating with a class size of 30 in 1929. Her dream was to be a nurse. She attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She received her pin as a registered nurse in 1931. Her first job was at the Norfolk State Hospital in Nebraska. She met and married James R. White in 1933. In 1934 Sondra Joy was born. In 1937 the family moved to Livermore, California. She was adventurous all her life and her youthful desire was to see the Pacific Ocean and the great Mountains of the West. In 1939 the family moved to Belmont, California, where she worked at Twin Pines Sanatorium and Sondra started school. Soon WWII came along and Mercedes worked three jobs because of the shortage of nurses. She worked at Twin Pines early AM, for Dr. Howe in a clinic in Redwood City, California and in the evenings she was off to Sequoia Hospital. In 1942 she moved to Redwood City, California and in 1944 Collette Alicia was born. Mercedes finally settled down to one job in 1952 and worked for two OBGYN doctors. Dr. Kennett and Dr. Weddell. She knew all about the birth of babies and even delivered some herself and tried to be at the birth of all of her grandchildren just to be sure that things were going properly. She divorced in 1959 and became a single mom. She worked hard raising two girls in the 50’s. She retired in 1972 after 41 years in nursing. She was very active in Redeemer Lutheran Church in Redwood City. She sang in the choir and participated in many activities. She moved to Roseburg, Oregon, in 1973, residing with her youngest daughter and her family. Not wanting to sit still for long, she went to work for Senior Services of Douglas County. She retired on her birthday, after seven years. There was a party at the Senior Center to start her off on her fulfillment of a 37 year study of her Genealogy. She went to Laurel, Nebraska in 1979, to attend her 50th class reunion. She was a member of the Laurel Concord Alumni Association. She took a trip to Devon, England, in 1988, visiting the Cory castle and other early ancestral places in Oxfordshire as well as touring London. She became a member of the Genealogical Society of Douglas County, Inc. Through her search, she proved her lineage making her an honoree member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was proud to find she was a descendant of Jane Seymour who was the bride of King Henry the Eighth. Mercedes had a passion for a lot of things in her life. First and foremost was her family. Nothing meant more to her and she was very devoted to them as they were to her. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing both classical and popular pieces for the pleasure of her family. She also loved flowers and plants of all kinds and was a member of the Riverbend Garden Club. Winning many awards at the Douglas County Fair. She painted with oils and had been involved in some art shows over the years. The Art Center was one of her favorite places and she was usually taking a class or two. She sewed and crocheted. In 1987, she made everyone in the Roseburg High School marching band a cap or scarf. She loved watching and hearing them and never missed a performance. Another great passion was garage “saleing.” She could always create a treasure from something she bought on those early Saturday mornings. She was a great cook and made the best pot of potato soup ever. She had a strong and compassionate spirit which never left her till the end. She was sweet and kind giving kisses on the hand. She was always loyal, full of determination, and an inspiration to all who met her especially during the last few years of her illness. She always had a heart that overflowed with love. She leaves behind two daughters, Sondra Joy Drivon and her husband, Richard of Canyonville, Oregon; and Collette Alicia Metcalf and her husband, Jac of Roseburg, Oregon; 12 grandchildren, Daniel and Kathy Drivon; Greggory and Alicia Hayes; Michael Drivon; Kevin Drivon; Joi Crumpton; Alicia Chalker; Denise and Kenneth Graham; Lynette and Eric Lieske; Michael and Kim Metcalf; Tamara and Tim Rasmussen; Shannon and Amy Metcalf; Tim and Michelle Metcalf; 31 great-grandchildren, July Metcalf; Austin Metcalf; George Metcalf; Emmett Metcalf; Gabriel Rasmussen; Dalton Rasmussen; Adam Metcalf; Hannah Metcalf; Matthew Metcalf; Brandon Drivon; Julie Drivon; Garrett Hayes; William Hayes; Nathan Rust; Ileah Drivon; Laci Gosnell; Leanna Drivon; Chelsea Crumpton; Autumn Crumpton; Ashley Crumpton; Jonathan Crumpton; Sophia Chalker; Matthew Graham; Alicia Graham; Joel Graham; Olivia Danville; Monica Danville; Serena Danville; Micah Danville; six great great-grandchildren, Chloee Goin; Cyliss Hickman; Marley Randolph; Logan Bodine; Keegan Bodine; Kalliauna Bodine. This family is a testament of a woman who always saw the positive side of everything and tried to work out a plan to satisfy the needs of all who loved her. Tomorrow we will start without you, but we know you are finally with your Mother, Father, and brothers you so longed for. Cremation rights were held with four grandchildren present on September 28, 2005, at 12:15 pm at the Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg. In lieu of flowers, a special fund will be set up for a memorial bench to be placed in a quiet garden spot to be announced at a later date. The remaining gifts will be placed in a scholarship fund for students of arts and music. We will be hosting a celebration of life at the end of October to be held at the Arts Center in Roseburg. Time and date will be announced. May you toe dance with the angels, their voices especially Michael’s, will sing you to sleep. Now fly like a bird through the heavens lifted by wings of joy. Your heart eternal is blessing us below. God’s speed Nonie, we love you.
