Agnes Adaline Closner
CLOSNER, Agnes Adaline — Age 85, formerly of Glide, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born on July 25, 1919, in Gallup, New Mexico, to Joseph and Minnie (Cox) Owens. On July 2, 1946, in Vancouver, Washington, she married Earl Closner who preceded her in death on April 12, 1993. The Closners moved to the Glide area in 1960. Agnes enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Survivors include her step-son, William R. Closner; six step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Agnes was also preceded in death by two sisters; one brother; and step-daughter, Judith Snyder. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at 2 p.m. within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Pastor Mike Miller of Glide Baptist Church will officiate. WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is in charge of the arrangements.

Ima D. Durham
DURHAM, Ima D. — Age 79, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2005, at her home. She was born on July 19, 1926, in Pierce, Oklahoma, the daughter of AJ and Opal (Dorrell) Newton. She was raised and educated in Oklahoma, graduating from Pierce High School. Ima became a nurse and worked many places including, Oklahoma, Maryland, California and Oregon. In the early years, she worked at the old Mercy Hospital in Roseburg and later at Mercy Care Center Family, where she started the practice of providing hand knitted caps, booties and quilts to the new citizens of Douglas County. When Ima retired, she started another career as a volunteer for Mercy Hospital in the Family Birth Place and continued making countless booties, caps and quilts. Ima was a football fan, not just a regular fan, but a fanatical fan, especially if it involved the Oklahoma Sooners, and she did not appreciate “blind football officials”. She is survived by her children, Birdie Milano of Roseburg; Hank Ridge of Florida; and a ”daughter of her heart”, Barbara Nielsen of Roseburg. Ima also leaves two brothers, Donald Newton of Sacramento, California; and Leon Newton of Folsom, California; as well as three sisters, Mary Ann Gossett of Glendale, Oregon; Wanda Geikin of Gothenburg, Nebraska; and Sylva Nielsen of Oakland, Oregon. She also had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Roy Lee Newton. Memorial Services will be held at the Mercy Hospital on Friday, September 30, 2005, at 3:30 p.m. in conference rooms “B” and “C” with Chaplain Wally Gwaltney, officiating. Graveside services will be at the Glendale Cemetery on Wednesday, September 27, 2005, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Steve Peters officiating. TAYLOR’S FAMILY CHAPEL.

Frederica Hamilton Hicks
HICKS, Frederica Hamilton — Age 79, of Hillsboro, Oregon, passed away on September 23, 2005. She was born on January 26, 1926, in Roseburg, Oregon. She and Claud Hicks were married in 1950. Frederica moved from Roseburg in 1964, to Beaverton, Oregon, and to Hillsboro, in 1989. She was a graduate of Roseburg High School in 1944, and the University of Oregon in 1948, with a B.S. in Political Science. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She also volunteered for over 12 years at the Good Samaritan Hospital and a member of the Senior Studies Institute at PCC. She is preceded in death by her husband, Claud Hicks in 2004; and a sister, Florence Isobella Powell. She is survived by her son, Scott Alan Hicks of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Laurie Elizabeth Hicks of Orono, Maine; son, Jeffrey Hamilton Hicks of Beaverton, Oregon; and son, David Russell Hicks of Portland, Oregon; and three grandchildren. In remembrance, contributions may be made to the Oregon Food Bank. A private memorial service will be held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Fireside room in Beaverton.

June Lorraine Bowler-Piehl (Brown)
BOWLER-PIEHL, June Lorraine (Brown) — Age 88, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, September 7, 2005. She was born in Leckie, West Virginia, on July 5, 1917, to William Sunday Brown and Tamsey Belle Brown (Browning). She was the 11th of 13 children. Although she loved West Virginia more than any place in the world, she moved to San Diego, California, in 1949, where she met and married William H. Bowler and started their family. She was a school teacher for most of her adult life and she loved her job with a passion. June was a very loving and generous person who loved children, animals, plants and the outdoors. She never knew a stranger. Everyone knew her for her ability to tell stories and remember the small details and dates from long ago, always inserted in her anecdotes. She also loved to travel and fulfilled a lifelong dream in 1979, when she and her husband traveled to Europe to visit their eldest son. In 1986, they moved to Roseburg, Oregon, where she avidly volunteered at the V.A. Hospital as an escort. She volunteered there until she was physically unable to continue doing so, a few years ago. She continued to wear a volunteer badge after that since she was so proud of her work there. In 1992, after 41 years of marriage her husband Bill preceded her in death. She continued to have a zest for life and through her volunteer work at V.A. in Roseburg, she met and married Joseph Piehl in 1996. He preceded her in death in 2002. June was also preceded in death by both of her parents; and six brothers and three sisters. She had one brother and one sister who passed away before she was born. June is survived by all four of her children, Timothy Bowler and his wife, Francoise of Cambiac, France; Mary B. Watkins of Julian, California; Amelia Swope and husband, Tom of Roseburg; and David Bowler and his wife, Lisa of Lakeview, Oregon. She has eight grandchildren, Jamie Hensley; Todd Watkins; Joshua Swope; Wendy Rees; Jody Swope; Nicholas Bowler; Jessica Boyce; and Lucas Bowler. She also has two great-grandchildren, Makenzie Hensley and Nicholas Hensley of Roseburg; and two more soon to be born, Sophie Boyce and Chloe Rees. She is survived by two brothers, Ray Brown of Cameron, West Virginia; and Bill Brown of Raleigh, North Carolina; and one sister, Shirley Scholl of New Concord, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. with Charles Ryan officiating, at WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES, 965 W. Harvard Avenue, Roseburg.

Richard ‘Rick’ Thomas Ronan
RONAN, Richard Thomas — Age 58, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 26, 2005, with his family at his side. Rick passed away at home from a long battle with cancer. He is free of all pain and is soaring with the eagles in heaven. He will be missed by his wife and family. Rick served his country proudly as a marine. He loved his country, family and God. His job was done here on earth and it was time for him to go home. He couldn’t stay for one more day. He was a warrior on the battlefield in Vietnam and he is now a warrior for God. Job well done oh faithful servant. I will love you forever! ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE! He was born on February 3, 1947, in Flint, Michigan, the son of Patrick and Margarete (Douglas) Ronan. Rick moved to Oregon in 2001, and settled in Klamath Falls, Oregon, before settling more recently in Roseburg. He was a member of the Sutherlin Christian Assembly, Life member of the Marine Corp League, MVP, Posse and Search and Rescue. He is survived by his wife, Susan of Roseburg; one stepson, Joe DeVito; two brothers, Brian and Dennis; two sisters, Barbara and Mary Ellen; two grandchildren, Conner and Joe; and eleven nieces and nephews, Jackie; Steve; Sandra; Nicole; Stephanie; Debbie; Jay; Bill; Dan; Susie and Jackie. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Doug, Jerry and Jim; and one sister, Patsy. Services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Bill Sanders. Interment will be at the Eagle Point National Cemetery with the American Legion Post # 28 of Grants Pass, Oregon, performing the service. Family and friends may come show their final respects on Thursday, September 29, 2005, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Patricia L. Bergmann
BERGMANN, Patricia L. — Age 72, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, September 24, 2005. She was born on August 29, 1933, to Henery A. and Vivian A. McLaughlin Gayle in Meadow, Texas, and raised in Yuma, Arizona. She was married to Walter Bergman on December 23, 1950, in Yuma. She had worked for Lockheed as a Technical Instructor and retired from that. They came to Myrtle Creek from California in 1966, just to get to a slower pace of life. She worked for Roseburg Forest Products for 24 years before retiring. Patricia was a good wife, mother and grandmother who really enjoyed shopping, family get togethers and spending time with friends from work. Patricia and Walter would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on December 23, 2005. Surviving are her beloved husband, Walter Bergmann of Myrtle Creek; two sons, Robert and his wife, Lavon Bergmann of Myrtle Creek; John and his wife, Michelle Bergmann of Myrtle Creek; one daughter, Patricia and her husband, Kirk Freeman of Myrtle Creek; one sister, Valene and husband, Jack Holt of Fontana, California; and eight grandchildren. No services are scheduled. MOUNTAIN VIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL of Myrtle Creek is assisting the family.

Patricia Angland
ANGLAND, Patricia — Age 89, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away and went to be with her Lord on Thursday, night, September 22, 2005. She was born in Spearfish, South Dakota, on March 17, 1916, to Frank and Ida Authier Papousek. Pat was an avid quilter and crafts person and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the St. Vincent De Paul Society. She enjoyed people and especially her church. She had worked as a bookkeeper and sales person. She was married twice, first to Ralph Hedrick who passed away in 1983, and then to John Angland who passed away in 1993. Pat was preceded in death by her two husbands, her brother, Lewis; her step-daughter-in-law, Shirley; and step-son, William Angland. She is survived by her niece, Bettina Nelson; nephew, Donald Papousek; step-son, John Angland; step-grandsons, Joseph and Eric Pettingill; step-daughters, Linda Wright and Lisa Parsons; and numerous great-grandchildren. We wish to thank Alice Miller and all the staff at Miller Manor for the wonderful and loving care Pat received while there. The family suggests memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, in memory of Pat mat be sent to the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 2468 Building Fund, C/O Dolores Thompson Treasurer, 416 W. Cloe ‘Chuck’ Crabaugh
CRABAUGH, Cloe “Chuck” — Passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2005, with his family by his side. He was born on November 6, 1922, in Adair, Oklahoma, to Cloe and Hazel Crabaugh. Chuck attended school in Mullen, Idaho. He was very active in sports. He joined the Navy during World War II, serving in the Southern Pacific. He belonged to V.F.W. 3970. He was a carpenter and loved making things out of wood for family and friends. He worked for Evans Product Co. in Coos Bay and Sutherlin, and for Douglas Forest Products Co. in Winchester, Oregon. Chuck married Eloise Buss on October 10, 1970. Chuck built two homes on Page Rd. in Winchester, Oregon. Chuck was very active in his Masonic Lodge. He was Past Master of Oakland Lodge #16, served as Secretary for the Roseburg Scottish Rite for 15 years, he was 33 degree Mason, belonged to the Douglas County Shrine Club; and Hillah Temple. He served as Worthy Patron for Oakland Eastern Star three times, and three times Royal Parton of Douglas Court, the Order of the Amaranth. Grand Royal Patron of Oregon, and Supreme Prelate of Douglas Council for the Order of the Amaranth. He is survived by his loving wife, Eloise; son, Gary Crabaugh and his wife, Mary of Creswell, Oregon; daughter, Cheryl Oelrich and her husband, Byran of Roseburg, Oregon; son, Dennis Buss and his wife, Lise of Concrete, Washington; son, Ron Buss of Redmond, California; and daughter, Kathy Davis and her husband, William of Portland, Oregon; eleven grandchildren, Robb Crabaugh of Eugene; James Rothrock of Chicago, Illinois; Jessica Willie and her husband, Chris of Longview, Washington; Seth Buss of Bend, Oregon; Katie Buss of Concrete; Cody Buss of Redmond; Krissa, Bryanna and Kaylyn Oelrich of Roseburg; Gina and her husband, Micheal Peeple of Eugene; Livi Evans of Eugene; sister, Mavie Hope of Riovista, California; brother, Wallace Crabaugh and his wife, Filliamine of Brentwood, California; brother-in-law John Jacobson of Magalia, California; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and LaCretia Wilcox of Coos Bay, Oregon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Newton and AnnaBelle Haga of Langlois, Oregon; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and seven brothers and sisters. Chuck touched many lives with his laughter, smiles and thoughtfulness of others. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend there ever was and he will be missed by all. Albert J. ‘Sam’ Yost
YOST, Albert J. “Sam” — Passed away at his home in Woodburn, Oregon, on Thursday, September 22, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 14, 1924, in Mulhall, Oklahoma, to father, Albert Yost and mother, Laura Harris Yost. Sam was a combat veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps from June 22, 1943, until October 30, 1945, he flew 28 combat bombing missions over Germany in 1944-1945 in a B-17 Bomber, with the 8th Army Air Force-457th. Bomb Group, 750th. squadron stationed at Glotton Army Army Air Base out of Petersbourgh, England. Sam was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3970 of Sutherlin, Oregon, a member of the American Legion and also a member of the Woodburn Federated Order of Eagles #3284. Sam retired from the Los Angles County Sheriffs Department in March 1975, after 25 years of service and spent 20 years in the Sutherlin area, where he bought and sold many properties. Mr Yost was preceded in death by his adopted son, Tommy Yost in 1967; his first wife, Wilma after 54 years of marriage on January 3, 2003, and his oldest sister, Velma Yost of Hillburn, Oklahoma on May 6, 2005. He is survived by his present wife, Roberta of Woodburn, Oregon; whom he met in Sutherlin in September 2003. He expressed on many occasions that it was love at first sight. They were joined in marriage on January 2, 2004, in Sutherlin. Mr. Yost has a surviving sister and brother, Vera Yost Harper and Vern Yost both of Mulhall, Oklahoma; Also three grandchildren, Timi Yost Baker and husband, Danny of Oregon City, Oregon; granddaughter, Jennifer Elwell Oedell and husband Leo of Colton, Oregon; grandson, Jeffrey Scott Yost Elwell and wife, Michele of Seattle, Washington; three great-grandchildren; great-grandson, Clayton Turner Elwell; and great-granddaughter, Spenser Olivia Elwell, both of Seattle; great-grandson, Gabriel of Colton, Oregon; Roberta’s daughters, Marlene Crossland of Winlock, Washington; Laurie Foster of Seattle; Eileen Foster and Donna Foster Johnson both of Chehallis, Washington; and Carrie Foster of Centralia, Washington. Cremation is to be conducted by Rest Lawn Funeral Home in Salem, Oregon with a private internment of ashes with his son, Tom and his first wife, Wilma in Palmdale, California.

Raymond Joe Burdic
BURDIC, Raymond Joe — Age 80, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, went safely home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 24, 2005, from his home. He was born on July 6, 1925, in Brad, Texas, the sixth of nine children of Warren and Myrtle (Kinman) Burdic. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a tail gunner in a B-17. He received several medals including a Good Conduct Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal. After the war he re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and rose in rank to a Staff Sergeant in the SAC (Strategic Air Command) Bomber Unit. He has been a resident of Myrtle Creek for many years and had worked for the Green Valley Lumber Mill. Mr. Burdic is survived by his wife, Margene of Myrtle Creek; a daughter, Pamela Adams and her husband, Bob of Newberg, Oregon, two sons, Allen Burdic and his wife, Erlah of Canyonville, Oregon and Perry Burdic and his wife, Sandy of Riddle, Oregon. He also leaves a sister, Margie Hackney of Cisco, Texas, as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All are welcome to a memorial service to be held at the Myrtle Creek Assembly Of God Church on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Bob Marson. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Fred Signett Jr.
SIGNETT, Fred Jr. — Age 80, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born on June 29, 1925, in Portland, Oregon, to Fred and Lettie Signett Sr. Mr. Signett served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific during WWII. On December 7, 1946, in Reno, Nevada, he married Wanda Cook. The Signetts have lived in the Roseburg area on and off for the past 20 years. Mr. Signett worked as a log truck driver and boat deliverer. He also had his pilot’s license and flew to different places to pick up heavy equipment for auctions. Mr. Signett enjoyed going to the coast, fishing, crabbing, bowling, and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Signett of Roseburg; daughter, Verna Jean Huggard of Irvine, California; son, Roland Signett of Bellingham, Washington; sister, Donna Higgins of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandson. Mr. Signett was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Louise; and a brother, Robert. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses. Pastor Tatum will officiate. Military honors will follow within the grounds of the Roseburg Memorial Gardens. WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is in charge of arrangements.

Robert ‘Bob’ Earl Germond
GERMOND, Robert Earl “Bob” — Age 64, of Tillamook, Oregon, passed away on September 25, 2005. Bob was born on May 25, 1941, in Portland, Oregon, to Robert and Ione Germond (Clark). Bob graduated from Oakland High School in 1959. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was in there from 1959-1963. He was a logger for 12 years, then owned a business as a commercial bait dealer and later as an excavator before retiring. Bob was an avid fisherman and greatly enjoyed the outdoors and annual hunting trips to Eastern Oregon. He and his family traveled around the Pacific Northwest appreciating his homestate. Bob especially treasured time spent with family and friends. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Barbara; his cherished daughters, Michelle of Tillamook; and Katy of Olympia, Washington; mom, Mary of Oakland; brothers Wayne and wife, Sherry of Astoria, Oregon; Ted and wife, Jan of Oakland; Richard and wife, Jaynee of Roseburg, Oregon; sisters, Sue and husband, Nick Marcum of Oakland; and Phyllis and husband, Roger Bolman of Monmoth, Oregon; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert and mother, Ione. A private graveside service will be held on October 1, 2005, at the Coles Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made in Bob's name to the American Lung Association, United States Veterans Association or the American Red Cross.

Carolyn Kay Wilson
WILSON, Carolyn Kay — Passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2006. She was born in Bazine, Kansas, on August 11, 1933, to Ruby and Slim Beadle. In 1940, my dad loaded my mom and me and everything we had in our old Willis Knight Coupe and moved to Eugene, Oregon, where my parents lived the rest of their lives. I married Dee Wayne Wilson in 1950, and had three children. Sons, D. Brad Wilson of Roseburg, Oregon; Randy and wife, Karen of Roseburg; their two children, Natalie of Beaverton, Oregon; Chad of Santa Ana, California; daughter, Sue Wilson Belnap and husband, Jeff of Creswell, Oregon; their two sons, Jason of Cottage Grove, Oregon; and Jake and wife, Melissa and their two children, Parker and Haley of Eugene. All whom survive her. Carolyn and Dee moved to Roseburg, in 1960, where she was his business partner and helpmate in several ventures. Carolyn was a long-time lady golfer at Roseburg Country Club, Stewart Park and Ramshill, Borrego Springs, California. At Carolyn’s request there will be no service. Many thanks to Douglas Hospice and Mercy House, for the care and comfort they gave her. Remembrances may be made to the Community Cancer Center or Mercy House.

John Charles ‘Chuck’ Schnell
SCHNELL, John Charles — of Winston, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at his home in Winston, at the age of 81. He was born in Stockton, California, the son of John Charles and Ethel (Abel) Schnell. He was raised on a small farm near Sacramento, California. Chuck took part in World War II and received the Purple Heart for action seen in Europe. Chuck was married twice. His first marriage to Ruth Hesseltine, who passed away in 1990, produced three children, Anne Clemons of Fresno, California; Charles Schnell of Roseburg, Oregon; and Beverly Brookhart of Atlanta, Georgia. He is survived by all three children; three grandchildren, Joyce Clemons; Dorian Brookhart; and Jeremy Brookhart; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Barnard; and Mersadie Jaymes; and two sisters, Hilda Schrepfer of Reno, Nevada; and Irene Sabina of Michigan. He was blessed with a second marriage to Irene Poer of Winston, who survives him. They had ten years of marriage together; years that really fulfilled his life and saw him take an active interest in church activities. He especially enjoyed ushering at the Assembly of God church in Quartzite, Arizona, when he and Irene lived there. Irene’s family and church friends kept him constantly busy and surrounded by affection and activity. Chuck was a stalwart family man who always provided. He was also a steadfast worker who never shirked duties and had little patience for those who did. He had a variety of jobs over many years but was most happy being a mechanic, which he was for the last forty years of his life. He had a sense of humor that was always present, using it to lighten many situations. Chuck will be missed by many. Sic transit gloria mundi. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Anthony Marshall of the Dillard Church of God. Interment will be at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno, California.

David Anthony West
WEST, David Anthony — Age 29, of Glide, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2006, in an automobile accident. He was born on November 30, 1976, in Bellflower, California, to Michael and MaryBeth (Youngberg) West. The West family moved from Big Bear, California, to Glide, Oregon, in 1985. David graduated from Glide High School in 1994. On January 17, 1998, in Glide he married Nikki Manske. David had worked as a journeyman ironworker since 1998. He was a member of the Ironworkers Local 29. David enjoyed hunting, rafting, playing with his kids, going to the beach, barbecues and playing Texas Hold’em. Survivors include his wife, Nikki West; children, Erika and Zachary West all of Glide; father, Michael West and his wife, Midge, also of Glide; mother, Beth West of Roseburg, Oregon; sister, Lorri Standley of Glide; brothers, Danny West of Roseburg; Jacob West of Glide; grandparents, David and Barbara Youngberg of Long Beach, California; father and mother-in-law, Bruce and Bev Manske of Glide; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and many loyal friends. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2006, at 3 p.m., in the North Umpqua Bible Fellowship Church. Pastor Mike Miller of the Glide First Baptist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David’s memory to the Trust Fund for Erika and Zachary West. Private cremation rites have been held. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in charge of the arrangements.

James Oliver Allen
ALLEN, James Oliver — Age 59, of Winston, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2006. He was born on April 8, 1946, in Myrtle Point, Oregon, the son of Bud and Myrtle (Cole) Allen. After high school James served in the Vietnam Conflict from 1963 until 1967 with the U.S. Marines. James was a member of the Winston VFW at one time. He loved logging, the outdoors, deep-sea fishing, hunting, playing pool and he very much enjoyed time spent with family and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Allen; sons, Randy Allen of Salem, Oregon; Chris Allen of Glide, Oregon; mother-in-law, Alice Bishop; five grandchildren, Jim Bob; Briana; KayLynn; Aleah and Morgan; four sisters, Nancy Smith; Debbie Bissonnette; Ora Cockrum and Ann Holloway; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his dad, Bud; mother, Myrtle; step-father, Hank Gilbert; nephew, Joseph Smith; and son, Kevin Allen. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at the Tenmile Cemetery. Following the service everyone is invited to the Winston VFW Hall for a gathering. Friends and family may come pay their respects on Friday, January 20, 2006, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel.

James Troy Taylor
TAYLOR, James Troy — Age 38, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away suddenly on January 18, 2006. James was born on February 15, 1967, to Patricia Lou Jarvis and James Charles Taylor. James is survived by son, Joseff Taylor of Wyoming; mother, Pat and step-father, Frank Jarvis of Myrtle Creek; brother, Eric Von Zepplin of Myrtle Creek; brother, Mike Jarvis of Eugene, Oregon; brother, Shane Jarvis of Myrtle Creek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James Charles Taylor. MOUNTAIN VIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.

David H. Swearingen
SWEARINGEN, David H. — A Monmouth, Oregon, resident passed away on January 10, 2006. He was born on September 17, 1935, in Drain, Oregon. He married Marilyn Bush on August 23, 1958, in Drain. In 1960, they moved to Madras, Oregon, and lived there until 1970, when they moved to Condon, Oregon. They lived in Glide and Yoncalla, Oregon, before settling in Monmouth in 2004. He was in the U.S. Air Force and had a Master of Education (OCE). He was a high school teacher and coach for 33 years. He enjoyed fishing and traveling with his family. David is survived by his wife, Marilyn Swearingen; daughter, Teri Lee and her husband, Chris of Salem, Oregon; son, Blake Swearingen and his wife, Laura of St. Helens, Oregon; step-mother, Eugena Fisher of Elkton, Oregon; brothers, Marvin Swearingen and his wife, Ruth of Eugene, Oregon; Ronald Solomon and his wife, LaWanda of Oakridge; sister, Gay Sorenson and her husband, Larry; and grandchildren, Nathan Swearingen; Paige Swearingen; Whitney Lee; and Braden Lee. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nici Swearingen; brother, Rex Swearingen; mother, Barbara Parks; and father, Charles Swearingen. An open house for Dave’s last party will be held on January 28, 2006, at the Swearingen home, 295 Jacobson Way, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

M.D. ‘Bud’ Shrum
SHRUM, M.D. “Bud” — Bud Shrum of Redmond, Oregon, passed away on January 10, 2006, of natural causes. He was 73. Mr. Shrum was born on August 19, 1932, in Roseburg, Oregon, to Vern and Carrie (Gilbert) Shrum. He graduated from Glide High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1953 until 1955. Mr. Shrum graduated from Oregon State University in 1959 with degrees in Forestry Engineering and Forest Management. He worked for US Plywood, Champion International and the Bowlin Company in various management and project management positions throughout the south. Mr. Shrum married Darlene Carlile on September 22, 1956, and had two sons. Mr. Shrum moved to Central Oregon in 1982 and settled in Sunriver and had just relocated to Redmond. He was heavily involved in Little League and Pop Warner programs in Roswell, Georgia, during the 1960’s and 1970’s as well as the Boy Scouts of America. He was instrumental in organizing the first integrated Little League Baseball Program in Pocomoke City, Maryland, in 1966. His priority in his personal life was always his family, children and grandchildren. His great-great-grandfather, Thomas Shrum led one of the first overland wagon trains to the Oregon Territory in 1846. Settling first in the Salem, Oregon, area and a few years later settling in the N. Umpqua area now known as Glide. The family still owns and resides on a portion of the original homestead. Mr. Shrum was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Carrie and a sister, Norma Jean Wright of Glide. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Redmond; son, Joe of Sunriver; son, Randy and his wife, Lori; and grandchildren, Skyler and McKenzie of Glide. To celebrate the life of Bud Shrum a memorial potluck service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 1 p.m., at Seven Springs Ranch, 10879 Buckhorn Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice.

Kermit Otto Muetzel
MUETZEL, Kermit Otto — Age 96, of Roseburg, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 17, 2006. He was born on May 7, 1909, in Lakeside, Oregon, the son of Otto and Alice (Carter) Muetzel. Kermit was the second of six children. He was a logger, rancher and also worked in construction. He loved to hunt, fish and travel with his wife in their motor home. Kermit loved his family and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish. He is survived by his wife, Twila of Roseburg; sister, Ariel Goold of North Bend, Oregon; brother, Courtney Muetzel of Roseburg; three children, George Muetzel and his wife, Carol of Days Creek, Oregon; Judy Eli and her husband, Ray of Denver, Colorado; Janet McGinnis and her husband, Larry of Corbett, Oregon; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Roseburg Christian Fellowship. Officiating will be Pastor Phil Evans. Interment will be at the Tenmile Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Louise Miller
MILLER, Louise — Passed away on January 16, 2006, at the Roseburg, Oregon, Riverview Terrace where she had resided for the last six years, following her 99th birthday. She is joining her husband, Oscar who preceded her in death on May 12, 1996. The Miller’s were married in Los Angeles, California, on January 14, 1933. They were blessed with four children and retired in Roseburg in 1964. Louise was active in the Glide and St. Joseph Catholic Churches. She enjoyed Bridge, was a founding member of the Knit-Wits, and was active in the Roseburg Garden Club. She was a generous philanthropist, a true friend and a loving mother. She is survived by her children, Lee Miller of San Diego, California; Marilyn Troxler of Morro Bay, California; Richard Miller of Coto de Caza, California; Peggy Hayes of Parker, Colorado; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 23, 2006, at 12:10 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of the arrangements.
